The west cork crew of Cal McCarthy & Eamonn Dullea along with other members of the Carbery Plastics Rally team faced an endurance test just to arrive at the Donegal Harvest event. An 8 Hour trip stood in front of the team leaving West Cork on Thursday evening. After the disappointment of retiring at the last round while leading due to a freak driveshaft failure, the team knew that the championship spoils were almost beyond them. A win was required and non-finishes for their rivals were the only way their position would improve and even then all that was possible was to draw level with championship leader John Doogan,
Speaking about his chances, Cal McCarthy said;
“ We still have a long shot at improving our position but a win is required and even that may not be enough but if we are not in we can’t win so we took the decision to compete if only just for the experience as it’s our first trip to this part of the country”
Starting last on the road due to an entry mix up, the team settled in well, finishing stage one just 11 seconds down on David Moffett, despite the treacherous conditions causing many of the mainfield had dropped out. On stage two, the team’s fortunes took a turn for the worst when at an extremely slippy junction the car cut out and would not restart and had to be pushed by marshals and spectators. This cost the team over 40 seconds. The problem was traced to a stray wire from the starter at the end of the stage.
In service, the service crew checked through the car and the team decided to stick with the cut slicks that they used on the first loop as they roads seemed to be drying out. Co-driver Eamonn Dullea commented
“We gambled on cut slicks as the surface appeared to be abrasive on recce but with so much muck and standing water on the stages they were of no benefit until the third stage which was much cleaner.”
The team were in a solid 3rd place at service, but with all their championships rivals still in the event, even a win would not improve their championship position and the team decided to maintain a clean steady pace and gain a finish. “ We are running third now and there is no benefit in pushing harder unless others drop out, we will try not maintain our position and not risk the car in these conditions as its for sale” Cal commented.
In the end the team held onto 3rd overall and with it netted 3rd in class 16 in the Dunlop national championship. In parc ferme, Cal said “From Eamonn and myself, I would like to congratulate Johno on the championship win, and thank David and Chris for some great battles throughout the year, the competition has been fierce but we have remained friends through it all and had some great craic and that what it’s all about.” After 2 years competing in the junior championships, winning the West Coast series last year and coming 2nd & 3rd in the national series in 2010 and 2011, the team plan to broaden their experience by heading for the British Rally Championship in 2012.
The team now prepare for their last event, The Westlodge Hotel Fastnet Rally which is run by their own club, Skibbereen & District Car Club where they plan on contesting the mainfield class 11 battle. Fermanagh’s, Garry Jennings (Mitsubishi) and his Letterkenny co-driver, Rory Kennedy held off a late challenge from Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry (Subaru WRC) to win the Redcastle Hotel Donegal Harvest Rally, the penultimate round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship.
Jennings, who had originally planned to drive a Subaru WRC, reverted to his usual Mitsubishi and finished five seconds ahead of Maguire.
Gary McPhillips/Gary McNern (Escort) were third – one minute and 32 seconds further behind. The Group N category was won by Trevor Bustard/Kenny Bustard (Mitsubishi).
Although not competing, Monaghan’s, Sam Moffett (Mitsubishi) has won the Motorsport Safety Team Group N award within the Dunlop series.
Meanwhile, Monaghan’s, Johnno Doogan (Escort) clinched the inaugural Dunlop Junior National Rally Championship courtesy of his fourth place finish in the Junior category of the rally. Another Monaghan driver, David Moffett (Toyota Starlet) won the category in County Donegal – finishing three seconds ahead of Meath’s, Chris Snow (Honda Civic) with Cork’s, Cal McCarthy (Honda Civic), almost a minute behind in third having spun on the second loop of stages.
On a wet opening stage, Jennings, despite running a cut slick, set the fastest pace, the Kesh driver was twelve seconds quicker than Maguire with Barrett a further second behind in third. Jennings also dictated the pace on the second test close to Redcastle and with the conditions
more suited to his tyre selection, dominated the third stage at Kinnagoe Bay. At the service halt, he led Maguire by 21 seconds with Barrett in third, a further 18 seconds adrift.
Jennings revelled in the foggy conditions on the latter section of the third stage. Maguire declared that he lost time having chosen a hard compound tyre. Barrett was quite content with third in his bid to secure second overall in the Dunlop series.
Donegal’s, Trevor Bustard (Mitsubishi) had a steady run to hold fourth overall.
Meanwhile, McPhillips (Escort), fifth in general classification, led the Modified category, however, he was concerned as a bolt sheared off one of the tramp bars. Manus Kelly (Escort) also had concerns that centred on a whine from the rear axle.
Even though Brian Brogan (Escort) overshot on the second stage and lost some 12 seconds, he was seventh overall in a top ten that also included Declan Gallagher (Toyota Starlet), Rodney Wilton (Escort) and Pat Kirk (Mitsubishi), the latter admitted he just couldn’t get into the groove.
Elsewhere, Wesley Patterson (Escort) overshot the first junction on the opening pair of stages and was cautious on the third stage. His main aim was the acquisition of Dunlop points in the race for the rally.ie two-wheel drive award. His Dunlop rival, Frank Kelly (Escort) overshot and spun on the first stage and overshot again on the second test. Washington James (Darrian), had no wipers on the opening two stages, he ended the loop 28th. in overall classification.
Shane Maguire (Subaru) struggled with tyre selection and also had anti-lag problems.
Although Jennings was quickest on the fourth stage, timing issues forced the organisers to credit all the remaining competitors with his time. Maguire punched in the best time on S.S. 5, but it was only a second faster than Jennings and the pair had the same time on S.S. 6.
At the final service halt, Jennings led by twenty seconds with Maguire 37 seconds clear of Barrett, who was off the road on stages four and six.
McPhillips moved into fourth with Manus Kelly just eight seconds behind.
Bustard, in sixth, lost time when he encountered the Mitsubishi of Pat Kirk, who was struggling with rear differential problems.
Brian Brogan (Escort) was seventh with Declan Gallagher (Starlet) six second behind – the Donegal driver had intercom troubles on S.S. 5. The Escorts of Rodney Wilton and Camillus Bradley completed the top ten.
In the quest for the rally.ie award, Patterson led pre-event series leader, Frank Kelly (Escort) by 22 seconds, both were untroubled on the second loop.
Barrett retired with a blown engine as he departed for the final loop of stages. Maguire narrowed the margin on stages seven and eight. A four second gain on Stage 7 and an eight second advantage on the penultimate test saw the Monaghan ace just ten seconds off the lead prior to the final test. In a dramatic final stage, Jennings survived a brief off road excursion to take victory, he is the first Group N driver to win a round of the 2011 Dunlop series. Maguire was second and took maximum Dunlop points and McPhillips was third. Bustard survived a broken drive to win the Group N category and also capture the Dunlop “Driver of the Day” award.
In the race for the rally.ie award, Patterson, who was eighth overall, collected 16 Dunlop points. Kelly was twelfth overall behind John McQuaid (Ford Escort). Both are level on points although Kelly’s total is from seven events, one more than Patterson, the title will be decided on the Westlodge Hotel Fastnet Rally in Bantry at the end of October.

The penultimate round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship, the Bailey NiteClub Redcastle Oceanfront Spa Hotel Donegal Harvest Rally on Saturday next (October 8th) has attracted an entry of some 130 competitors. Although Tim McNulty has won Vard Memorial Trophy, the Motorsport Safety Team Group N award, the rally.ie two-wheel drive category and the Dunlop Junior National title have all to be decided.
Last year’s winner in Donegal, Garry Jennings is the top seed, the Fermanagh ace is set to drive a McKinstry prepared Subaru WRC as he prepares to battle against many of the Dunlop regulars.
Maynooth’s, Kevin Barrett (92 points) is seeded at number two as he tries to overhaul second placed Sam Moffett in the race for the runner-up spot in the Dunlop series. Moffett, with 95 points, is not amongst the seeded entry and with his closest rival, Robert Barrable not contesting the event, Moffett will be crowned the Motorsport Safety Team Group N champion without turning a wheel.
Former triple champion, Niall Maguire (Subaru WRC), currently fifth in the Dunlop standings, finished second in the last round in Clare, last year, he finished second to Jennings in the Donegal event.
One of the big battles in Donegal will centre on the two-wheel drive category, Gary McPhillips, Rodney Wilton, Wesley Patterson, Manus Kelly, Washington James, Declan Boyle and Camillus Bradley complete the top ten.
With the exception of Washington James, who will drive his nimble Darrian, the rest are in Ford Escorts.
In terms of the raly.ie two-wheel drive award, Tyrone’s, Frank Kelly (56 points) is five points ahead of Lisburn’s, Wesley Patterson with Sam Smyth on 47 points and Washington James with 42 points. Kelly set some very impressive times on the latter stages in Clare. Patterson is the favourite to close the deficit in a battle that is likely to go right down to the wire.
The race for supremacy in Donegal between Gary McPhillips, Rodney Wilton, Manus Kelly, Declan Boyle and Camillus Bradley will be intense, Boyle is the reigning Dunlop two-wheel drive champion.
Meanwhile, Monaghan’s, Shane Maguire (Subaru) is seeded at eleven, currently second in Class 4 to Moffett, he will be hoping to move up a few places in the overall standings. Donegal’s, Trevor Bustard (Mitsubishi), making a rare outing in a round of the Dunlop series, is seeded behind Maguire.
Another plethora of Escorts in the hands of Brian Brogan, Michael
Conlon, Frank Kelly and Martin McGee are next on the entry in a top twenty that also features Dunlop regular, Declan Gallagher (Toyota Starlet), Joseph McGonigle (Citroen C2R2) and Robbie Peoples(Ford Escort).
Within the Dunlop series, top spot in two of the modified classes has already been decided. In Class 9, Lloyd Hutchinson (Mini) has taken the laurels while Liam McCarthy (Toyota Corolla WRC) has secured Class 15.
The Redcastle based nine stage event is the final and deciding round of the inaugural Dunlop Junior National Rally Championship. The top four drivers are - Monaghan’s, Johno Doogan (Ford Escort), who leads the way on 28 points from Meath’s, Chris Snow (Honda Civic), who has 23 points, Monaghan’s, David Moffett (Toyota Starlet) has amassed 20 points and Cork’s, Cal McCarthy (Honda Civic) has 18 points.
Doogan took maximum points (10) in Carlow and Clare and second place (8) points in Galway. Snow netted second place points in both Monaghan and Carlow and third placed (7) points in Carrick on Suir. Moffett scored maximum points in Monaghan and Carrick on Suir and McCarthy took a maximum score in Galway and eight points in Carrick on Suir, he retired whilst leading the last round in Clare.

With one week to go, the Donegal Motor Club have just announced more details of the 2011 Bailey Niteclub Redcastle Oceanfront Spa Harvest Rally.
With entries closed, the entry list stands at over 120 competitors, and organisers are busy for the ‘recce’ week-end, with this number of crews expected in the Inishowen peninsula for Sunday 2nd October, ahead of the main event itself on Saturday 8th October based at the Bailey Niteclub Redcastle Oceanfront Spa Hotel.
Clerk of the Course, John Crumlish has been busy this week, with many details of the event in full operation, and in touch with all of the officials for the week-end.
“A few last minute details are being looked at, but we have been busy seeding the entry field, in time for the forthcoming week-end.” John continued, “ the Hotel has been helping us as well, preparing for the main event on the 8th, as we need a broadband and satellite link in place for the results and command centre at the headquarters, this is vital to the operation and smooth safe running of the whole rally. We will have a total of 240 competitors on the day with an army of almost 200 officials to look after, and it is important that we get through the event safely and have all points covered. With all those people plus all the spectators in the area, it’s going to be busy!”
On the point of spectators, John appealed directly to spectators, “to watch from safe location, and obey the officials, who are there for your protection, and have an enjoyable days sport.”
John hoped that the rally would bring good support to the Inishowen Peninsula, and that local businesses would benefit from the influx of visitors.
John again thanked the Bailey Niteclub Redcastle Oceanfront Spa Hotel for their support, all the residents along the route of the rally, the Garda Schiona, Donegal County Council, along with all the officials who assist with the running of the event.

The Clerk of the Course for the Donegal Motor Club’s 2011 Harvest Rally, has made an appeal to intending ‘last minute’ entrants to the Harvest Rally planned for Saturday 8th October, to get their entries in immediately as the official closing date has passed.
COC John Crumlish, said,
“I know there are some drivers and co-drivers who have left the submission of entries to the last minute, leaving myself and the organising committee with the task of trying to seed the entries from competitors who have submitted ‘on time’, while some others are holding off and then causing us problems by having to reseed the entries after the Entry List would normally be published next week.”
John continued,
“I know of a number of competitors who have not placed their entry in the post because they were competing in other events, but we must be able to go ahead and plans schedules, road closings and take final delivery of stationery and other printed matter now ahead of the event. As for anyone waiting, don’t expect a reseed if you are not in on time!
Today, I am giving a special extension to the closing date, up to Tuesday night, 27th September. This has to be a ‘cut off’ point to get a seeding list prepared for the field of competitors, so we can publish later this week. Get your entry in now!”

The entry this year attracts a wide verity of Competitors and is set to be the rally to watch this year.
Taking place on Saturday the 8th of October in Redcastle, Co. Donegal, COC John Crumlish said the event is
“Ready to Roll and the stages are second to none”

8th of October 2011, will be another memorable date in the Inishowen Peninsula, when Donegal Motor Clubs Harvest Rally returns once again, to offer 160 competitive stage kilometers for €495, which will include standard insurances and meal tickets for 2 crew members. Clerk of the Course for the event, John Crumlish, wants to offer ‘good value for money’ to the rally competitor, on the ‘best roads in Ireland’.
Speaking while carrying out official duties at the recent Ulster Rally, COC for the Donegal Motor Club Harvest Rally, John explained that,
“I want this to be a value for money event, giving competitors a top class day’s rallying for as little expense as possible. I have tried to make this an all inclusive package, with entry fee, main insurances, and meal costs built into the total cost. I hope this will be attractive to the competitors, as I understand the position being a competitor myself. Regulations are now available online and may be downloaded at the club website, www.donegalmotorclub.com.”
John has been working hard over the summer months, putting this rally together, along with the assistance of the most experienced tarmac organisers on these islands. John added,
” We are always busy here in Donegal Motor Club, with many of the officials working and helping across the country at many other events. There are many helping at other National and International events such as timekeeping and providing safety advice for stages events. This is why Donegal Motor Club is regarded as one of the best Clubs in the country and our assistance is always sought and we will be putting that to good use for the Harvest event in October.”
This popular Donegal Motor Club event, will be round 9 of the Dunlop National Championship, round 6 of the Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship and also a round of the DMC’s own Bassetts Plumbing & Heating Club Championship.
The event takes place on Saturday 8th October, and will be based at Redcastle Co. Donegal.
