Dominant second-in-a-row win for Tom Cave on Coracle Stages

Posted: August 7, 2011 5:47 PM

Teenage rally driver Tom Cave took a dominant win on this weekend's Coracle Stages rally for the second year in a row. The 19 year-old, partnered by Craig Parry, resisted attack from local drivers to emerge with a winning margin of 1minute and 20 seconds on the one-day event.

After claiming his maiden outright rally victory on last year's event, the pressure was on Tom to defend the result this year and using his Group N Subaru Impreza, he and Craig began the event as clear favourites.

The day started with the prospect of fierce competition, with Dylan Davis and Barry Jones. However, problems for the others meant that the early promise of a classic battle dissipated, easing the pressure on Tom and he drove a mature and considered event, with few problems.

In fact, his only concern was a perceived lack of performance from the engine on the early stages. However, the Davies Motorsport Services technicians attended to the Subaru's intake system in service and this rectified the problems, leaving Tom with a clear drive to the finish ramp.

Commenting after the finish, Tom said:
"I'm really happy with today's result. To take a back-to-back win on the event this year, after the luck we've had so far this season, has given me, Craig and the rest of the team a huge boost.

"The car was perfect all day, particularly after the guys sorted the intake system, to get the best out of the engine. We found a really good rhythm and felt very comfortable in the car. In fact, I'd say my confidence is the best it has been since the Mid-Wales rally back in March.

"It's also really important for the whole team to get this win. It has given me back some of my confidence and has reaffirmed everyone's faith in the car and our abilities. It has given us all a real boost and it's very encouraging for the rest of the BTRDA championship."

Tom's next major event will be the Woodpecker Rally, the penultimate round of the 2011 BTRDA championship. Tom is contesting the Production Cup, for Group N cars and is currently in second place. However, although he is seven points off the lead, he is able to improve his score by 25 points on the last two rounds, thanks to the dropped score system.

Commenting, he said;
"We can take a lot of confidence forward to the Woodpecker from this weekend. We need a good result to keep our title hopes alive and after this weekend, we're definitely in the best shape."
