Competitors who are first enter “Great Stuff Caterers” event first

Entries for the 2011 Darren Swanton Memorial “Great Stuff Caterers” Cork City Rally Sprint have started to come in. The event which is in its 2nd year is being run in the grounds of old Cork city landfill site on the Kinsale Road. The event will take place on May 22nd and it will be a charity event for Marymount and for Operation Uisce. It also promises to be a family day out with kid’s entertainment as well as a great day’s motorsport.
Tickets, Adults €10, kids €5 and family €25 along with parking are available at the Blackash Park and Ride facility
Track action is timed to begin at 10AM continuing until 7PM.
Last year's winner, Waterford's Brian O'Keeffe, is coming back to defend his title in his Subaru Impreza.
Also confirmed is the 2006 Billy Coleman award winner Owen Murphy who will drive his Hankook Mitsubishi Evo 9. Owen has already chalked up two overall wins in this year's Valvoline National Forestry Championship and is now intending to add the Rally Sprint to his list.
This year’s event offers great value costing just €165 and the organisers are planning for a minimum of three runs for each competitor, and with the expectation of more.
Each run will be over a distance of 4.2 km on a mixed surface track. There is a new pit area and starting location this year to improve the flow of the event. The track itself has had a lot of work done to improve the road surface which will benefit the competitors on the day.
As the number of competitors is limited to 120, Cork Motor Club would encourage competitors to get their entries in to ensure they can part of this unique Charity Motorsport event.

The 2011 Darren Swanton Memorial Great Stuff Caterers Cork City Rally Sprint was officially launched last night (Wed. April 27, 2011) at the Lifetime Labs by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork Michael Ahern. The launch was supported on the night by sporting stars Billy Holland (Senior Munster rugby player), Noel O’Leary (Cork Senior football player) and by the Director of Ford European Motorsport Gerard Quinn.
Gerard, who is an honorary lifetime member of Cork Motor Club, speking at the launch, said:
“I am happy to support Cork Motor Club in the launching of the event. I hope to be at the rally sprint on the day to help out in the running of this unique charity event.”
Also present on the night was Brian Allen of Great Stuff Caterers who are the title sponsors for the event. He wished the Darren Swanton Memorial Great Stuff Caterers Cork City Rally Sprint every success.
"I hope that it will be an enjoyable and safe event for everybody involved," stated Brian.
Other invited guests on the night were Mary Swanton, the Friends of St Patricks and Marymount Hospice, the Bishopstown Lions Club, Darragh O’Riordan and the 2010 rally sprint winner Brian O’Keeffe. The organisers would like to offer a special word of thanks to “Trabolgan Bird of Prey Education Centre” who brought along three Falcons to add to the sense of occasion on the night.
This year’s rally sprint will take place on the 22nd of May at the Cork City Civic Amenity Centre, on the Kinsale Road in Cork (subject to permit). The event is being organised and promoted by Cork Motor Club in association with Cork City Council and the Bishopstown Lions club. All profits from the event will go to charity, with Marymount Hospice being the main beneficiary of the event. The entry to the event will be limited to 120 cars and will be run on a 2.4KM mixed gravel surface.

The official launch night for the 2011 Darren Swanton Memorial Great Stuff Caterers Cork City Rally Sprint (subject to granting of permit) will be held on Wednesday the 27th of April at the Lifetime Lab (www.lifetimelab.ie) at 20.00 hours. It is shaping up to be an interesting night with a selection of sporting celebrities turning out on the night to support the main beneficiary of the event Marymount Hospice.
Senior Munster player Billy Holland will be in attendance on the night. A son of former Munster team manager, Jerry who was capped three times in the mid-80s, Billy is another product of the Munster development programme. He has played Ireland U19/21s and made his competitive debut for Munster in September 2007 and this season has been promoted to a full contract.
Cork Senior Football player Noel O’Leary is coming along to support the event. O'Leary first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Cork under-16 team. Since then, Noel has represented Cork at every level and he made his senior debut for Cork in 2003. In the 2010 season Noel was a key player for Cork when they won their first All-Ireland final in twenty years.
Double British Rally Championship winner Keith Cronin will in attendance on the night. Keith won the 2009 British Rally Championship in his first year in the series, defeating multiple champion Mark Higgins in his privately entered Cronin Motorsport Mitsubishi Lance Evolution 9. Cronin successfully defended his title in 2010 driving a Subaru Impreza.
Ford’s European Motorsport Director Gerard Quinn will be coming along on the night. Gerard works alongside Malcolm Wilson, the Ford World Rally Team Director and owner of M-Sport, Ford of Europe’s partner for its main motorsport activity in the FIA World Rally championship. Gerard has gained experience on Ford’s motorsport activities in his previous roles and, before joining Ford, he was already very active in the organisational side of grass roots motorsport in Ireland through his membership of Cork Motor Club. Gerard is lifetime honorary member of Cork Motor Club
All are welcome on the night, and it is hoped to raise extra money on the night by auctioning a signed Munster and Cork jersey. So come along and met the celebrities.
The Rallysprint itself will take place on Sunday, May 22 (subject to granting of permit) in the grounds of the Cork City Amenity site on the South City Link Road, formerly the landfill site. The event is being run in conjunction with the Cork City Council and the Bishopstown Lions Club and sponsored by Great Stuff Caterers.

The 2010 Great Stuff Cork City Rally Sprint was a great success. It combined the passion of Cork Motor Club (CMC) for its sport with the memory of a deceased club member (Darren Swanton RIP) to raise money for Marymount Hospice. It was appropriate that Marymount was the beneficiary of the profits of the event as Darren was a patient of Marymount Hospice.
This unique motorsport event, held on the 30th of May 2010 in the heart of Cork City (former Kinsale Road Landfill), was held in association with Cork City Council and the Bishopstown Lions Club. It resulted in €28,512 being raised for Marymount which is located in Cork City and provides a range of services for free to terminally ill patients. It is an extremely worthy cause, providing help and support to patients and their families during very difficult times.
A special word of thanks to the title sponsor of the event “Great Stuff Caterers” whose support gave CMC the confidence to go ahead with running the event.
CMC would also like to thank all the sponsors for their extremely generous support which made the outcome of this event so successful. To everybody who helped in any way in the organisation of the event and to all the volunteers on the day, you should be proud in the knowledge that the money raised was the single biggest voluntary event contribution made to Marymount in 2010.
CMC would like to thank the competitors on the day for providing the entertainment. It’s not often you get the opportunity to use your hobby and passion for the greater good. Conditions were wet and slippy on the day and the track did cut up “slightly”, but boy did they manage to put on a show! The conditions may not have added to the fun of competing, but it certainly added to the fun of watching. CMC would like to congratulate all class winners and to the overall winner of the event Brian O’Keeffe and co driver Donacha O’Callaghan. It’s not too often you get to fly through traffic in Cork City, but Brian certainly wasn’t thinking about red traffic lights on the day. Second overall went to Brian O’Mahony (Metro 6R4) while third went to Alan Ring (Lancer Evo 9).
Finally, Marymount has approached CMC to run this event again in 2011 and CMC has applied Cork City Council for a permit to run the event on the 22nd of May.
Marymount’s need for funding is great with the opening of the new hospital. In the current climate of doom and gloom, it is an opportunity to create a positive outcome and to support individuals and their families in their time of need. CMC is asking everybody to support the 2011 Great Stuff Cork City Rally Sprint.
