EIGHT World Rally Cars, an S2000 car and a top Group N car fill the top ten places in the Hillgrove Hotel Monaghan Rally (Sunday April 17th), the second round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship - without doubt, the strongest entry list in Irish rallying in 2011.
Local ace and last year’s winner, Niall Maguire and co-driver, Enda Sherry are the top seeds in their Subaru WRC. Having failed to score major Dunlop points on the opening round on Abbeyleix, Maguire will need little motivation for his home event as he bids for his seventh victory.
One stage from the loop of three stages, that will be repeated three times, is quite close to his Ballinode base, but Maguire knows the pitfalls of such situations, “It’s a very fast stage, and you could make a mistake if you decide to push that little bit harder. I could do with a win but Tim McNulty will be very hard to shake off, his Subaru S12B will gain time exiting the many junctions on the stage. Kevin Barrett has shown great pace this year, he will go well, remember, he was quickest on the first stage here last year. The whole top ten is very competitive including Robert Barrable, who won the West Cork in his Skoda Fabia S2000. In addition, there are a host of very fast drivers in Mk. 2 Escorts.”
Series leader, Tim McNulty (Subaru WRC) occupies the number two berth and will be expected to set the pace. In Abbeyleix, the Meath driver led from the start and finished almost a minute ahead of reigning Dunlop champion, Mel Evans, who is not competing in Monaghan. However, it will not be easy for McNulty given the quality of the top ten. Maynooth’s, Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC), who won the Mayo Rally and finished second in the recent Circuit of Kerry, will be hoping to bring that form to Monaghan, an event he led last year before retiring with head gasket troubles.
Another Dunlop regular, Derek McGarrity, switches to a Subaru WRC for this round as opposed to the Mitsubishi EvoX he drove in Abbeyleix. The change is due to his participation in the Circuit of Ireland the following week. The entry of West Cork Rally winner, Robert Barrable, who will again be co-driven by Monaghan’s, Damien Connolly, will provide plenty of interest. Indeed, the Dubliner, the current Billy Coleman award winner, will also face both of his rivals from the Clonakilty event.
Meanwhile, another Monaghan driver, Adrian McElvaney (Subaru WRC) occupies the number six berth, his lack of competitive action could be a disadvantage.
Cork driver, Daragh O'Riordan (Subaru WRC), who finished just 1.3 seconds behind Barrable in Clonakilty is considering tackling the remainder of the Dunlop series. Limerick’s, Colm Murphy (Subaru), who was third in the first round in Abbeyleix and also third in West Cork, is the top Group N driver as he continues his Dunlop quest.
The final places in the top ten are occupied by Omagh’s, Seamus Leonard (Subaru WRC) and Dunmanway’s, Liam McCarthy (Toyota Corolla WRC), who was seventh in Abbeyleix.
The Modified entry is equally enthralling with Gary McPhillips (Ford Escort), who won the category in Monaghan last year and was also a magnificent fourth overall, heading an impressive line up. Local hero, Daniel McKenna, reigning rally.ie two-wheel drive champion, Declan Boyle, Rodney Wilton, Manus Kelly and Wesley Patterson, all in Mk. 2 Ford Escorts, are all capable of a strong finish.
Meanwhile, the Group N entry features young local aces, Sam Moffett (Mitsubishi) and Shane Maguire (Subaru) along with Stuart Darcy, Thomas Fitzmaurice and Trevor Bustard, all in Mitsubishi’s.
British drivers, John Stone (Skoda Fabia WRC) and Mark Jasper (Hyundai Accent WRC) illustrate the quality of the entry along with Longford’s, Tommy Doyle (Renault Clio R3), Conor Harvey (Honda Civic) and the Escort trio of Trevor Mulligan, Damien Gallagher and Brian Brogan.
Meath’s, Peter Wilson (Honda Civic) is the top Class 11 entry and his battle with Jim McKenna (Starlet) and late entry, Damien McCarthy (Honda Civic) should be intriguing.
The rally is also the opening round of the Dunlop Junior Rally Championship, Monaghan’s, Anthony Hand (Ford Escort), David Moffett (Starlet), Johno Doogan (Escort), Christopher Snow (Civic) and Damien Whoriskey (Escort) are the leading entries.

Robert Barrable winner of the Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman award, in his Skoda Fabia S2000 heads to this weekend’s National rally championship round in Monaghan. The rally which is Robert’s co-driver Damien Connolly’s home event will see the crew return to the tarmac stages after the disappointment of missing the second round of the BRC the Bulldog rally due to engine failure, which occurred on a test prior. Robert will take on the Monaghan stages in his Skoda Fabia S2000 having won his last outing in the car the West Cork rally back in March. Robert’s chances of competing on the event have until earlier in the week been hanging in the balance. The mechanics at the Evolution Motorsport team awaited confirmation that the engine and gearbox from the Fabia would be ready in time for the rally start on Sunday. The engine was shipped from French preparation outfit Oreca yesterday (Thursday) where it was met in the UK by members of Robert’s team and then shipped overnight to the team’s headquarters in Co. Dublin where the mechanics will work through the night to have the car ready to depart for scrutiny on Saturday. “It has been an anxious wait to know if the engine would be ready and back in time for the event, Damien and myself are keen to do Monaghan and are looking forward to our first national rally in the Skoda” commented Robert.
Robert will face tough competition on the stages with Niall Maguire, Kevin Barrett and Derek McGarrity all lining out in Subaru Impreza WR cars in their quest for maximum championship points. “We are looking forward to getting back in the car and we are under no illusions about the level of competition on the event although it will be interesting to see how the times compare with the WRC boys. There will be no heroics we are still learning the car” said Robert. Following Robert’s outing on the Monaghan Rally the car will be converted back to gravel specification in time for a gravel test and the third round of the BRC the Pirelli International rally at the end of the month.

With over seventy five crews registering for the 2011 Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship, the class based series got off to a strong start on the opening round in Mayo, and once again looks set to prove itself as Ireland’s most popular clubman based championship. As always, competition on round one of this most closely fought of championships was intense, as competitors sought to get the early advantage that could prove crucial at season end.
A new title sponsor for 2011 in the shape of Ballisodare based Sligo Pallets has brought fresh impetuous to this ever increasingly popular series. Sligo Pallets specializes in recycling and repairing slightly damaged and waste pallets for the haulage sector. Established in 1998, the company has customers throughout Ireland north and south. The recycled pallets are just as robust, and with the same lifespan as new pallets – except at significantly reduced costs. The company has close ties to rallying with owners Andrew Mullen and Elaine Doherty not only well known competitors in their own right, but the firm has also sponsored many leading Irish competitors over the years including the likes of Eugene Donnelly, Kris Meeke and Gary Jennings.
James Cassidy and John Norris became the first winners of the Sligo Pallets Drive of the Day award for 2011 after setting the fastest time for a Border Championship registered crew in class 12 on special stage 3 of the Mayo Stages Rally. The Ford Escort pairing from Co. Meath were presented with personalised rally jackets for their achievements by sponsors Andrew Mullen and Elaine Doherty at the rally finish. Drive of the Day awards will be presented at each of the six rounds of the Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship in 2011, with the eligible class and special stage selected at random at driver’s briefing before the event.
Thanks to the class based structure that allows all competitors, regardless of what class they compete in, an equal opportunity to claim the overall title, it is not until the third or fourth round that a clear picture emerges of championship contenders. That said, those who scored strong results in Mayo have already put themselves in a strong position to be in contention at year’s end.
Among those to start the season in style in Mayo were Adrian Cannon and Derek Heena who took a maximum ten points in class 2 in their Honda Civic, with local man Ciaran Walsh and co-driver Shane O’Brien keeping the Donegal crew on their toes throughout the event. In class 4 Trevor and Kenny Bustard added to their Group N win with maximum Border points in their Evo 9. English visitor Joe Shrimpton with Ciaran Geany co-driving added an international flavour with their class 6 win in a Citroen C2R2, while in the WRC class Kevin Barrett and Sean Mullally had the better of Niall Maguire and Enda Sherry. The Monaghan pair will be hoping to reverse that result on home soil this week-end.
In the modified classes, Cavan’s Damian O’Reilly and Damien McCabe came away from Mayo with ten points in the bag after winning class 9 in their Escort with last year’s class winners Ambrose Gaughan and Derek Molloy taking the runner’s up spot. Enda McLoughlin and Michael Reilly upheld Leitrim honours with class 10 maximum points in their Escort ahead of Donegal’s Charlie McGinty and Niall McDaid. More success for Donegal in class 11 courtesy of the Escort of Paul and Patrick Gallagher with Galway’s Martin Cunningham and Patrick Gallagher claiming nine valuable championship points.
James Cassidy and John Norris added to their Drive of the Day award with maximum points in class 12 while in class 13 Donegal’s Geoffrey Dolan and Connor Murphy had a fine run in their Talbot Sunbeam to claim the points ahead of Monaghan’s Michael Conlon and Aidan Boyle. And in class 14, Camillus Bradley and Crawford Henderson got the better of reigning Border Champions Declan and Brian Boyle.
The 2011 Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship is a class based championship comprising six events in Mayo, Monaghan, Cavan, Newry, Sligo and Donegal. Open to competitors in each of fifteen classes, the best four scores over the six rounds count towards the final championship positions.
