Robert Barrable winner of the Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman award in his Skoda Fabia S2000 won the Quality Hotels West Cork rally by just over a second from Daragh O'Riordan and Tony McDaid in their Subaru Impreza WRC. It was one of the closest finishes in the West Cork event and was just reward for Robert and Damien in their first ever outing on tarmac in the new car. The rally got off to a difficult start for Robert with a throttle sensor problem on the Skoda developing prior to the start of the first stage and although the problem was sorted out it was an unsettling start to the rally with Robert posting a fourth fastest time through the opening stage 'Shanaway'. Weather conditions changed dramatically with heavy rain blowing in off the Atlantic and soaking stage two, Robert took advantage of the difficult conditions and arrived in the first service halt in third overall. The repeat of the opening loop of stages saw the heavy rain continue and the stages develop standing water in places, Robert opted for a steady approach as he learned the car and held his position of third overall just fifteen seconds off the leader Colm Murphy in his Subaru Impreza. At the second of the service halts Robert reported no problems with the Skoda and decided to continue on the same settings for the rest of the day rather than take a chance and upset the balance of the car, the decision was to be the right one as Robert continued to take time from second place Daragh O'Riordan in the WRC Impreza. By the end of the final stage of day one of the rally Robert had the Skoda up to second overall thirteen seconds ahead of Kevin Kelleher in the Lancer and just over sixteen seconds behind the leader Colm Murphy.
Day two of the rally saw an improvement in weather conditions and the stages drying out after the heavy rain from the previous day, the third place crew of Kevin Kelleher and Gerard Seaman were caught out by the changing conditions on stage 11 'Inchybridge' crashing out of the rally. Robert picked up where he left off from day one with a good run through the opening tests all the while gaining in confidence in the Skoda Fabia on the tarmac stages. Robert and Damien put in blistering times on the following two stages setting fastest times through stages twelve and thirteen and taking the overall lead in the rally for the first time. At the following service a new set of tyres were fitted to the Skoda and some minor changes to the suspension set Robert up for the final loop of stages and the plan to seal the victory. By the finish of stage fifteen the Skoda crew had a lead of twelve seconds but that was to be cut to just one second on stage seventeen when Robert was delayed behind Colm Murphy's stricken Impreza, allowing Daragh O'Riordan to close the gap in second and leave it all to play for on the final 'Clonakilty Town' stage. Through the final short two mile stage Robert held his nerve and concentration and emerged from the test up one second on O'Riordan and taking the overall victory. A remarkable performance in this just his second rally in the new car and his first outing on tarmac.
"I am delighted with the win, we came here this weekend with the aim to gain experience on tarmac in the car and to get some valuable miles under our belts, and it is fantastic to win on our first tarmac outing. The car is great and I am growing in confidence in it, thanks to all the team and the club for putting on a great rally" said Robert at the finish of the rally. Next outing for Robert and Damien in the Skoda is round two of the Dulux Trade British Rally championship the Bulldog International rally in Wales on the 2nd of April, where they will look to build further on their strong points finish on the Rally Sunseeker.

The West Cork Rally is once again the opening round of the Citroen Racing Trophy Ireland 2011, having played that role in 2008 and 2009. It is back by popular demand with the Citroen Trophy drivers, and the Citroen entry made up of ten 1600cc C2 pocket rockets.
Several drivers are returning to the series once again this season, and Limerick’s Mark Sheahan is one of them, having rebuilt his C2 R2 Max following his Cork 20 accident last year. A shakedown on the opening round of the Irish National Championship in Birr brought a class win, and Mark is one of the favorites in 2011 as he set some fastest stage times in last year’s Trophy, and is a former class 6 Irish National champion driving a Clio S1600. Another driver who has had a class award this season is Mayo’s David Carney, who lifted a class award on the rain sodden Galway International Rally. David is returning for his second crack at the series, once again with experienced co-driver Ray Fitzpatrick aboard. Cork’s Kieran Daly has re-prepared his R2 Max and intends to contest a full season, after a shakedown on the Birr Stages whilst Dublin’s Graham Colfer is also aiming to contest a full season this year, and both of these drivers are certainly hoping to get into the generous Citroen Racing prize money to enable them to continue throughout the year.
The Donegal contingent is headed by Joe McGonigle, who aims to contest both the CRT UK and Irish series in 2011. Joe has re-sprayed his familiar green R2 Max white, and was plagued with bad luck towards the end of last season. He is hoping to make amends this year, and finished 2nd in class on the weekend’s Mayo Stages. Donegal’s Scott McElhinney will wheel out his C2 R2 Max for the opener, whilst Robert Barrable, the 2010 CRT UK champion’s brother Peter, will wheel out the family C2 R2 Max in West Cork. With little rallying, but much racing experience, it could take Peter a rally or too to get up to speed, but he could be one to watch.
Other exciting newcomers include Yorkshire’s Joe Shrimpton, the young rallycross ace who is hiring a C2 Max from Derek Jobb. Joe with co-driver Ciaran Geany took part in the Mayo Stages at the weekend finishing 25th overall and 1st in class 6.
Former Junior rally-cross ace Samantha Thom, from Cookstown is also hiring a DJ Motorsport C2 R2 Max. Samantha, a niece of former NI Rally Champion Glenn Allen, was a top driver in the Junior Mini rallycross before some rallying exploits in a Peugeot 106 Cup car, and she is looking to gain more rally experience this year. Finally a top Junior rally driver is Kevin O’Connor who brings his 185 horse power C2 R2 to the Trophy this season. Kevin set some seriously fast stage times, running at the front of the Junior rallies last year with his black R2, and although he has a slight power disadvantage, he really could spring a surprise in West Cork despite his lesser machinery.
Once again the prize fund is unrivalled in Ireland for 2011. Citroen Racing in association with Total and Pirelli have once again helped the Trophies world-wide and the superb prize fund is open not only to the C2 R2 Max, but the new DS3 R3 rally car. Another new facet of all the Citroen Trophies world-wide in 2011 is that the tyres will now be supplied by Pirelli.
The prize money per rally is based on the final classification in Group R of the machines, starting with 4000€ per round for 1st, €3000 for 2nd, €2000 for 3rd, €1000 for 4th and finally €500 for 5th. There is 10,500€ per round up for grabs, whilst at the end of the season the winner receives a further 6000€, 4000€ for 2nd and €2000 for 3rd. Once again is a fantastic prize fund for the competitors and therefore a huge incentive. Championship co-ordinator Raymond Moore, from Charles Hurst Citroen, has worked very hard to pull it all together.
“I am delighted that we have ten cars going to the opening round in West Cork, and it’s nice to be back in West Cork with the Trophy. I think the incentives are there once again this season for the crews and certainly it’s a promising start in these economically difficult times.”
Another incentive on offer is not for the Citroen Trophy crews, but for fans who take video footage of the C2 R2 Max’s at the weekend. A €100 is being offered for the most viewed clip on You Tube. The winner will be announced a week after the event.
Entrants must title their video ‘CRT IRL West Cork….’ to start with, when uploading, so that all the relevant material can be searched for, and the winner will be announced in due course.
It’s ten of the best then lining up in West Cork, for the 2011 Citroen Racing Trophy Ireland.

With less than a week to go before the Quality Hotels West Cork Rally over almost 200 entries have been received in all categories to date. Cork Motor Club is very grateful to the competitors for their support in these tough economic times. 150 of these entries are in the main field while the Historic Category and Junior Category have 17 and 22 entries respectively. The event has been described in the past as the top clubman rally in the country, and the 2011 event could well reinforce this view. There are 17 special stages and over 200km of stage miles, so the rally will not be easily won. The top ten shows eight different types of cars, something that would have been unheard of a few short years ago.
Welsh crew John Dalton & Gwynfor Jones are the top seeds in their lightning quick Darrian T90 GTR. John has finished in the top three for the past three years and has won the Bones O'Connor Modified trophy each year since the award began in 2007. If the weather is dry, the Darrian will be tough to beat over the ultra fast stages. Daragh O'Riordan & Tony McDaid start at 2 in his newly acquired Subaru Impreza WRC S12C, and in theory should be the favourite. However it may take a little while to acclimatise to the new car, and that could be costly. At 3 are Kevin Kelleher and Gerard Seaman in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9. Kevin has had very little luck lately with car reliability proving to be a problem. He will be hoping to put all that behind him on his home event, and if the weather is wet could well win the event.
Billy Coleman award winner for 2010 Robert Barrable brings a touch of the exotic to West Cork, where he will give his new Skoda Fabia S2000 its Irish debut. The ex Jan Kopecky car is a proven winner in the IRC series and Robert , who will be co-driven by Damien Connolly, will be out to show the cars undoubted tarmac potential in Clonakilty. James Stafford and Frank Dwyer are at number five in their Darrian T90GTR. James was very quick in Birr a few weeks back until he ran out of road while third overall. The pressure has been on since to get the car ready for the event. If he is successful he will also be a contender for overall honours.
Peter Lloyd and Martin Brady are at 6 in a Subaru Impreza S12C. Peter is no stranger to West Cork having competed here as far back as 1989. His best result was 4th overall back in the 1998 event in a Metro 6R4. Trevor Mulligan with West Cork co-driver Sean Hayde are at 7. Trevor has never done the event before but is an extremely quick and spectacular driver in his orange Mk2 Escort 2.5. Damien McCarthy is one of the quickest young drivers in West Cork and has run strongly in the top ten for the past two years. Last year was his best result with seventh overall. Driving his usual Honda Civic with Eamon Hayes on the notes, he will feel ha can mix it with the more powerful machinery around him.
Father and son team, John & Declan Buttimer, start at number 9 in their Gp A Subaru. The S&DCC team are consistent performers in West Cork and another top ten finish is well within their range given the reliability of their car. Brian O'Keeffe and Derek Power complete the top ten in their Subaru Impreza. The rally has not always been kind to Brian, but he did manage to win Gp N last year and will be hoping for more of the same in 2011. Late entries have also been received from two very fast Gp N drivers in Colm Murphy and Danny Barry. Colm, navigated by Don Montgomery, who drives his usual Subaru, crashed out of the event three years ago while in second place. He will be someone to be watched over the weekend as a potential winner. Danny Barry navigated by Brian Duggan has never done the event before but has a lot of experience abroad in his Mitsubishi and could well be in the final shake up.
Outside of the top ten there are drivers of the calibre of Fintan Canty, Diarmuid Keohane, Thomas Davies, Leonard Downey & Fergus O'Meara. All of these are capable of finishing well inside the top ten if they hit form. The event is also the first round of the Citroen Racing Trophy and ten entries for this category have been received. Mark Sheahan, Graeme Colfer and Joe Shrimpton are the top seeds here at 41, 42 & 43 respectively.
The Historics will begin their rally on stage 5, led by Denis Moynihans Escort, followed by Mark Falvey in another Escort and Todd Falveys Porsche 911. Wyn Hughes and Neil Spain have been regular visitors over the years in the main event, but this year will be their first time in the Historic section. They are sure to be no less spectacular in their respective Escorts. Andrew Lehane, Darren Young and Vincent McSweeney all in Civics lead the Junior Rally which begins on Sunday afternoon loop in Ardfield. The rally is also the first round of the Windscreen Company Southern 4 Rally Championship for 2011.
The action begins at 10am and finishes at 4.30pm on the Saturday and restarts at 10.30am on the Sunday. The first car is expected back at the finish ramp at 5pm on the Sunday evening. The final stage will be a spectacular town stage finishing on Western Road which should bring a crowd back into Clonakilty after the rally. Spectators intending to watch the town stage are advised to park in either Deasys car park, the Church car park, or Community College car park, as parking restrictions will be in place near the stage location. The main spectating areas for the town stage will be at St. Marys Cemetery and on Western Road.

For the 33rd time Clonakilty will be alive to the sound of rally cars of all shapes and sizes on St.Patricks weekend, the 19th & 20th March. As always crews are expected from all corners of the island as well as some overseas visitors. Quality Hotels are on board as Title Sponsor for the ninth successive year. Darren McCarthy is clerk for the third year and has laid down a challenging route of 17 stages, one of which is a town stage, and will bring the event closer to the spectators. While various spectator stages over the years have either started or finished in close proximity to the town, this is the first time since 1984 that the cars will appear in action on some of the streets.
Cork Motor Club is pleased to announce that the entry fee is held at the 2009 & 2010 price of €630 which is excellent value for 17 stages and 240km of competition mileage. Road mileage is again less than the stage mileage at 175 km while service will be centralised as usual near Clonakilty. Regulations will be available to download shortly from www.corkmotorclub.com and www.westcorkrally.com
If you wish for the regulations to be emailed or posted to you when they become available, you can register your interest by means of a form on both of the above websites.
