RACE RETRO'S PORSCHE CELEBRATIONS CONTINUE TO GROW WITH STUNNING LINE-UP

Posted: February 9, 2012 12:11 PM

Race Retro's Porsche celebrations are continuing to grow, with a stunning line-up of rare and legendary cars on display and in action, when it returns to Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 February.

As well as the display of the first prototype chassis of the Rothmans Group C Porsche 956, raced by Jackie Ickx and Derek Bell, there will also be Sir Stirling Moss' Porsche RS61 Spyder, one of only 14 built, bought for $1.7 million at the Amelia Island Auction in Florida to mark Sir Stirling's 30th wedding anniversary.

They will be joined by the original Porsche 962 Group C car in Blaupunkt livery, driven to third place overall at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1988 by Frank Jelinski, John Winter and Stanley Dickens.

Joining the Group B Porsche 911 SCRS 1984 280bhp, three-litre, flat-six rally car in action on the Live Rally Stage is none other than rally legend Bjorn Waldegard, who will be reunited with a very special Porsche 914/6, raced in the 1971 Monte Carlo Rally, and now owned by Jamiroquai front man and car collector Jay Kay. Jay will also have a turn behind the wheel on the live rally stage, which will be running on Saturday and Sunday only.

Alongside the Porsche celebrations, there will also be the 1964 AC Shelby Cobra and the only works 1963 Lotus Cortina. Both of these incredibly rare cars were raced by driver Jack Sears, who will also be at the show.

Plus we'll have the hardtop roadster, driven in 1963 Sebring 12-hour endurance race by Christabel Carlisle and Denise McCluggage and the works MGB GT racer, also driven at Sebring by Paddy Hopkirk and Andrew Hedges.

There will also be an impressive array of cars up for auction at the show. Silverstone Auctions have secured an amazing line up for its debut auction at Race Retro including a 1958 Tojeiro Jaguar, widely regarded as the best one ever built, presented in its impressive Ecurie Ecosse livery. Also up for grabs is a 1976 Porsche 934 'Jagermeister' race car, an exact recreation of the original, which was one of the most famous and evocative cars to compete in that season's Le Mans and the European GT Championship.

The auction will be open for viewing all day on Friday and on Saturday morning. The sale will start at Saturday lunchtime, with automobilia, before moving on to classic and historic motor racing and competition cars and motorcycles. Auction catalogues will be available online at www.silverstoneauctions.com.

Adult tickets for Race Retro, sponsored by Peter James Insurance and HERO, start at £20 in advance, with children's tickets at £5 for Friday and Saturday and free on Sunday. Car parking is free and has been moved to a hard-surface area nearer to the halls. The show is open from 9.30am each day and closes at 5.30pm on Friday and Saturday and 4.30pm on Sunday. JAY KAY BRINGS 914-6 PORSCHE TO RACE RETRO FOR RALLY REUNION WITH LEGEND BJORN

Posted: January 27, 2012 10:51 PM

Jamiroquai front man and self-confessed petrolhead Jay Kay is bringing his Porsche 914-6 to this year’s Race Retro for a reunion with one of its original drivers, rally legend Bjorn Waldegard. Bjorn will be seeing if the car stands the test of time on the high octane Live Rally Stage on Saturday 25th and Sunday 25th February, before Jay Kay himself gets behind the wheel.

Bjorn drove the 914-6 in the Monte Carlo Rally, an event in which the Porsche was expected to excel. Three works-prepared cars were entered, driven by Bjorn, Ake Andersson and Gerard Larrousse, all highly skilled drivers who knew the Monte course like the backs of their hands. But the weather was to deal the Porsche team a cruel blow.

The 1971 Monte Carlo Rally was the snowiest on record. Andersson and Larrousse were forced to retire with gearbox problems, but Bjorn soldiered on to finish a worthy third overall. Sadly this marked the end of Porsche's support for the 914-6 in competition despite the fact that a 914-6 GT had won its class at Le Mans in 1970.

The 914-6 is just one of the amazing vehicles in singer Jay Kay’s collection of over 37 rare classics and luxurious supercars. Jay is a keen competitor when it comes to cars, having topped the leaderboard on Top Gear’s Star in a Reasonably Priced Car challenge so he’s bound to push the car to the limits on the specially designed course at Stoneleigh Park.

Breath-taking Group B action

A stunning 30 years of Rallying will be marked with a static display as well as an unbelievable line up on the Live Rally Stage. Rallying with Group B will be out in force on Saturday and Sunday, putting on an amazing showcase for visitors on the purpose built course that features challenging twists and turns.

Once again the line up of rally cars and drivers is amazing. Regulars Russell Brookes and Jimmy McRae will be among the drivers behind the wheel and cars in action include a Group B works Maxda RX7 that has never been seen at the show before, Henri Toivonen’s Lotus Sunbeam Talbot, a 1985 works Rover Vitesse and a 1992 Subaru Impreza 555.

Pulling out the stops for Porsche

ace Retro has put together an amazing line up of rare racing and rally cars for you to drool over this year including, for our 30th anniversary celebrations of Porsche, two unbelievable 956’s guaranteed to leave you open mouthed.

On static display will be the Group C Porsche 956, the 001 first prototype chassis that was raced in Rothmans livery by Jackie Ickx and Derek Bell. But cars weren’t made to be static and that’s why we’ve got not one but two Group B Porsche 911 SCRS 1984 280bhp three litre flat six rally cars in action on Saturday and Sunday on the Live Rally Stage.

*All hail the Honda.*

To celebrate the Honda Racing Corporation, we have the only known remaining example of the late Mike Hailwood RC 173 500/4 cylinder motorbike on which he won every GP he rode it in during the 65/66 seasons and a replica of the Honda RC 166 250/6 cylinder GP bike he rode in the 250 and 350 world championships.

They will be joined by a host of other noteworthy Hondas that will also feature in the popular Fire-Up Paddock, hosted by the charity Road Racing Legends, where legendary motorcycles are brought back to life as they get started up so the crowds can hear the roar of the engines. Also from Honda will be Neil Tuxworth, one of the best known race team managers and a former president of the TT Riders Association.

*Marvel at the MGB*

Another anniversary that we couldn’t just ignore is 50 years of the MGB. To pay tribute, we have a foyer display of two early ex works race cars. The 1963 hardtop roadster was driven in 1963 Sebring 12-hour endurance race by Christabel Carlisle, now Lady Watson, former Mini racer and the darling of British race fans in the early sixties, and Denise McCluggage, an American motoring journalist and lady racing driver. The roadster will be joined by the works MGB GT racer that was also driven at Sebring by a Race Retro regular Paddy Hopkirk and his co-driver Andrew Hedges.
