Posted: October 19, 2011 11:31 AM

Monday night 17th October, saw the launch of the first of a series of heats of the Maiden City Motor Club Ltd. Super Grand Prix, hosted by the Campsie Karting Centre at Campsie.

Kart Race co-ordinator for the Maiden City Club, Jude O’Neill, was on hand with Campsie Karting Centre owner Eamonn Gallagher, to supervise the first race when a band of enthusiasts battle it out for the role of ‘Fastest Qualifying of the Night’ times.

Almost half an hour passed with times rapidly falling, to get the best time of the night, 29.38 seconds, by Strabane man Gary Vaughin, proving to be untouchable.

Putting down a marker for others to follow, showed a clean par of heels to rally veterans Gerard Mullin and Graham Henderson.

Jude O’Neill said,
“this was a good start to the 3 night Practice nights and reminded participants that there will be two more nights for practice, Monday 24th October and Monday 7th November, followed by a final night on Monday 14th November, all at the Campsie Karting Centre at Campsie.” He added that, “winners share in a total prize fund of £500, so get out there and show us what you can do – if you think you are a Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button or Lewis Hamilton, we want to see you in Campsie!”.

Maiden City MC President, Jon McIvor was on hand to give encouragement to members, and said,
“I believe this is a great new departure for the Club to look to new members who were interested in karting. Later this month the Maiden City Motor Club will be hosting a Training Day in Limavady, and we will be encouraging as many Club members and members of the public to come along and see how rallying, timing and marshalling at motorsport events takes place. Members of the public can come along and see rally cars up close, and talk to the drivers about this sport, see how marshals operate and get involved in learning how electronic timing is carried out.”

Jon finished by saying,
“Come along on Saturday 29th October to Aghanloo Airfield near Limavady and get involved.”

Practice nights will take place over 2 further Monday nights, Monday 24th October and Monday 7th November, culminating in a Super Grand Prix final on Monday 24th November 2011 all at 7.30pm.

The Entry fee for a Practice night will be £35, including membership for the Maiden City Motor Club.
