22-year-old Stuart Biggerstaff, who started rallying less than 12 months ago, has secured the 2010 Hankook MSA Northern Ireland Stage Rally Championship title!
While Kenny McKinstry and Noel Orr won Saturday's F&M Contracts Down Rally, fifth overall for Biggerstaff and navigator Anthony Nestor was enough to seal another maximum points haul, putting the title beyond reach of their rivals.
In winning the title, Biggerstaff has become the youngest ever champion, beating the previous record held by 2008 champion, Connor McCloskey, by four months.
It is also the first time in the series history that a father and son have both claimed the championship laurels. Just nine years ago, Stuart's father, Denis, secured his second Northern Ireland Championship title.
"I can't believe it!" a jubilant Biggerstaff said after the event. "It will take a while to sink in! 12 months ago, I could never have imagined winning the Hankook Northern Ireland Rally Championship. I have to say a big 'thank you' to everybody who has helped throughout the year!"
The hunt for the 2010 title had become a two horse race, as Stuart Biggerstaff went head to head with Mark Donnelly. Such was the close competition, the two young hopefuls finished equal fourth at September's Bushwhacker Rally.
It was Donnelly who claimed maximum championship points on that occasion, courtesy of his faster time on the opening stage of the event. That left Biggerstaff needing maximum points at Saturday's F&M Contracts Down Rally to stay in with a chance of sealing the title, but again it was Donnelly who was quickest out of the blocks.
Second behind rally leader Kenny McKinstry after stages one and two, Donnelly was really making life difficult for Kinallen's Biggerstaff, who had been knocked out of his stride after clipping a tree stump on stage two.
But there was also trouble just around the corner for Donnelly, as his Mitsubishi Lancer ran out of petrol before arriving at first service!
He had to call for help, and was towed into the service park. Outside assistance is not permitted in rallying, and Donnelly was later awarded a 10 minute penalty as a result.
The penalty dropped him to the bottom of the results tables, while Biggerstaff and navigator Anthony Nestor assumed fourth overall and the top points scoring position in their Subaru Impreza WRC.
Suddenly, the championship battle was swinging in Biggerstaff's favour but he still had to secure maximum points and hope that Donnelly failed to score to wrap up the 2010 title ahead of the final round.
The odds were certainly swinging in Biggerstaff's favour, but his hopes of success almost went up in smoke during the sixth stage - literally!
A blown turbo towards the end of the test filled his Impreza with smoke, and the crew lost more than 30 seconds. They limped to the finish and managed to reach service in the nick of time.
"My heart sank when that happened," Biggerstaff admitted. "I thought it was all over. When we got back into service, we checked the oil level and there was no oil on the dipstick."
With another turbo borrowed from Kenny McKinstry, Biggerstaff's Subaru was restored to full health, and he went back on the attack through the final two stages.
Second among the Hankook championship registered crews, Biggerstaff had to regain the number one position to seal the title. He swiped one second out of Cyril Doherty and Vinnie Boyd on stage seven, leaving five seconds between the two crews going into the final stage.
Another massive push through the final test saw Biggerstaff take an impressive 11 seconds out of his rivals, promoting him into fifth overall.
He also regained the top points scoring position, and with rival Mark Donnelly finishing out of the points, Biggerstaff and Nestor sealed the 2010 Hankook MSA Northern Ireland Stage Rally Championship title with one round remaining!
At the top of the leaderboard, Kenny McKinstry and Noel Orr claimed rally victory from Colin Britton and Arthur Kierans, who were also the leading competitors in the Sunoco Fuels production category. Connor McCloskey and Francis Regan took third ahead of Raymond Mason and Peter Martin in fourth.
In the two wheel drive category, Oran Donnelly and Paul Hughes claimed the spoils from Gareth Sayers and Gareth Gilchrist, while the Montgomery Motorsport historic category was won by Andy Johnson and Jim McSherry. Their historic win also handed them the 2010 historic category title.

Pat O’Connell won his inaugural National Forest Rally Championship on Saturday’s Down rally, the final round of the 2010 season. The Cashel man only needed one point from the event-which he was awarded when he started the rally-to become the National Forest Championship. O’Connell reacted to his new status by setting very competitive times in his Evo9, co driven by Mark Wiley. After three stages he was lying second overall, but he slipped off the road on stage four and registered his first non-finish of the season. With three wins and two championship second places, O’Connell has led the series from start to finish. He has driven brilliantly all year and thoroughly deserved his title, after finishing runner-up in ‘09.
John Reid is 2010 championship runner-up, a position he held since round one. The Dubliner harried O’Connell all season with the Corolla WRC. He had a win in Cork and a trio of second places, but arriving in Down he had taller than the Mourne mountains to climb if he was to beat O’Connell. In the event he was also forced to retire at the half way.
The Down rally marked the first ever visit of the Irish National Forest Championship to Northern Ireland in the series’ twenty year history. A total of sixteen National Forest Championship crews ventured North for the historical event. As a result of heavy overnight rain the stages were challenging and a mere five of the southern crews finished. Clareman Christy Carey was one of the best finishers in his Evo9 and he scored enough points to jump from fifth to third in the championship.
Michael Cuddihy who entered Down but failed to start is now fourth in the championship and best two wheel drive in the Toyota Starlet. A maximum score in Down for Patsy Keenan resulted in the Atlanta resident moving up the tables from thirteenth to an amazing fifth overall. Mark Murphy started the day in fourth place with the potential for a podium place, but retirement beckoned and he slipped to sixth place in the tables.
The Down rally was won by local driver and ’09 winner Ken Mc Kinstry and he was joined on the podium by Colin Britton and Conor Mc Closkey.
National Forest Championship finishers in Down included Patsy Keenan, Vincent McAree, Christy Carey Sean Benskin and Mark Donnelly. The retirement list includes Pat O’Connell, John Reid, Mark Murphy, Frank Kelly, Ger Connors, Matt Shinnors, Ger Lucey, Ian Downey, John S. Quill, Tom Murphy and Emmet Cronin.
Top finishers in the 2010 National Forest Championship: Pat O’Connell 86, John Reid 82, Christy Carey 61, Mick Cuddihy 56, Patsy Keenan 51 and Mark Murphy 49.
Class winners are:
Class 1 Emmet Cronin (Escort), Class 2 Mick Nevin, (Escort), Class 3 Alan Dineen (Opel Corsa), Class 4 Eddie Cogan (Escort), Class 5 Frank Kelly (Escort), Class 6 Mark Murphy (Impreza), Class 7 James Murphy (Escort), Class 8 Patsy Keenan (Evo 9) and Class 9 Tom Murphy (205).

Kenny McKinstry took a second win on the Down Rally on Saturday 23rd October with a commanding 1minute 14second lead at the end of eight challenging stages in around the Castlewellan base.
As well as being a round of the Hankook Northern Ireland Rally Championship, the 2010 Down Rally also hosted the Petro Systems Irish National Forest Rally Championship, a first for any Northern Ireland event in the Championship’s 20 year history and with a host of unfamiliar name scattered among the entry list, many eyes would be watching to see how the best drivers from the republic would measure up to their northern counterparts.
Number one seed McKinstry, co driven by Noel Orr was flagged away from the start at Lower Square, Castlewellan, by Councillor Eamonn O’Neill just after 9am, leading the 52 competitors out to the first 4.5 mile test in Rostrevor.
McKinstry immediately leapt into the lead of the event, posting a time through the Newry Motor Works Rostrevor test three seconds quicker than NI Championship contender Mark Donnelly. Three seconds further back from Donnelly was 2008 Down Rally winner Connor McCloskey who was making only his second appearance this year in an older model Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6.
Newly crowned Irish National Forest Champion Pat O’Connell slotted into fourth after the first run through Rostrevor and then posted third fastest time, behind McKinstry and Donnelly, through the second McKinstry Motorsport Tollymore stage to move up to third overall, in the process showing that the Southern contingent was more than capable of holding their own north of the border.
Mark Donnelly followed up his second fastest time through Rostrevor with another second fastest in Tollymore, but the Mitsubishi Lancer ground to a halt on the road back to the first Castlewellan service. The crew managed to get the car back to the service park and eventually found a fuel pump relay to be the culprit, but with more than 10 minutes in time penalties added to their overall times they were relegated to the lower end of the leader board.
After the first service halt in Castlewellan, the crews returned to Rostrevor and Tollymore for a repeat of the earlier stages. Again McKinstry topped the timesheets with Pat O’Connell leading the pursuers ahead of a determined Mark Donnelly, who while still putting in competitive times was facing an uphill battle to overcome his earlier time lose.
Connor McCloskey was fourth fastest to protect his third place in the overall positions with Colin Britton handily placed in fifth to capitalise on any mistakes from the drivers in front.
Britton didn’t have to wait too long. Irish Champion O’Connell, from Tipperary, pushed hard in stage 4, Tollymore, putting his Mitsubishi off the road and while the car wasn’t badly damaged, they couldn’t regain the road and their first visit to the Down Rally was over. Britton duly moved up to second place.
At the halfway point in the event, McKinstry lead Colin Britton by 47 seconds, with Connor McCloskey a further 3 seconds back in third with Dromara’s Stuart Biggerstaff, leader of the Hankook NI Championship in fourth. Moneyreagh’s Raymond Mason rounded out the top five as the crews headed out to their first visit to the Drumkeeragh and Castlewellan tests.
It was Mason who sprung a surprise on the first run through his favourite stage on the event, BLRC Drumkeeragh, posting second fastest to leapfrog past Biggerstaff into fourth overall.
It got worse for Stuart Biggerstaff on the next stage in Castlewellan. The Subaru Impreza blew a turbo halfway through and he finished the stage billowing white smoke from the exhaust. Luckily for Biggerstaff, the service park was within the Castlewellan Forest Park and the service crew were able to change the offending part and get him back out on schedule although he did drop another place to Cyril Doherty. It was a close call for the Dromara driver, coming within moments of damaging the engine in the Subaru due to the loss of oil and potentially losing the Championship advantage he had while rival Donnelly was also struggling.
Stage seven was a repeat of the BLRC Drumkeeragh test, with McKinstry again at the top of the timesheets ahead of McCloskey, Britton and a recovering Biggerstaff. Raymond Mason was 3 seconds slower on his second run through the test to tie with Cyril Doherty for fifth fastest.
With only one stage left, the slippery Dale Kane Trailers Castlewellan Stage, it was time for a steady approach by the leading drivers, although Colin Britton threw caution to the wind to equal Kenny McKinstry’s time of 6:32 to finish with a flourish. Connor McCloskey took third fastest ahead of Stuart Biggerstaff who got back past Cyril Doherty, a move which was to prove pivotal as the results were finalised.
Oran Donnelly and Paul Hughes dominated the two wheel class in their Escort Mk2 all day to finish 8th overall, with the 1400cc Vauxhall Nova of Gareth Sayers and Gareth Gilchrist an impressive 10th overall, with a 11th place for Michael Conlon, Andy Magee in 12th and 13th for Niall Donnelly.
21st overall was enough to secure the Montgomery Motorsport NI Historic Championship crown for the Chevette of Andy Johnson and Jim McSherry.
Best of the local crews was Ballykinlar’s Sean Warnock, with John McLeigh reading the notes in 22nd, just one place ahead of Ballynahinch’s Niall Branniff and Ita Doonan. Banbridge crew, John and Gavin Devlin brought their Chrysler Sunbeam home in 26th after posting an impressive fourth fastest time on stage 5.
Kenny McKinstry and Noel Orr returned to the Lower Square finish to spray the champagne to celebrate two wins in a row, with Colin Britton in second and Connor McCloskey in third.
Raymond Mason and Peter Martin finished fourth, but arguably the biggest winner on the day was Stuart Biggerstaff.
Fifth overall secured top Hankook Championship points to ensure that he and co driver Anthony Nestor finished the event with a 13 point lead in the series, but more importantly, with 12 points available for a win on the last round in Antrim he now cannot be beaten in the title race.
Stuart’s main Championship rival, Mark Donnelly, languished well down the results after incurring the 10 minute penalty but fought on admirably to salvage some good stage times and points towards the Sunoco Northern Ireland Group N title.

Next Saturday’s Down rally is the final round of the Petro Systems National Forest Rally Championship, the season’s finale will see Pat O’Connell and John Reid going head to head to decide the outcome of a very exciting championship. Hosted by the Rathfriland MC, the 2010 Down rally makes history as it marks the first ever visit of the National Forest Championship to the Northern Ireland Championship in its twenty year history.
Based in Castlewellan the Down rally is also the penultimate round of the Hankook Northern Ireland championship. The event will follow a similar format to last year, with the start in Lower Square in Castlewellan, 4 stages in the morning and 4 further stages in the afternoon before the champagne finish back at the Lower Square. The cars will return after every two stages for service in Castlewellan Forest Park.
In the National Forest Rally Championship, Pat O’Connell in his Evo 9 and John Reid driving his Corolla WRC have been on tremendous form all season. Tipperary man O’ Connell won the first trio of rallies (Mitchelstown, Carrick on Suir and Moonraker), while Dubliner Reid was runner up on each occasion. Just six points separated them starting round four in Donegal, but disaster struck Reid when he retired with broken steering and it looked as if his championship aspirations were doomed, especially as O’Connell finished third. Suddenly the gap opened in O’Connell’s favour, but the roles were reversed on the next round in Cork when Reid was the victor and O’ Connell was third again. Reid could breathe again in the knowledge that he had a mathematical chance in the mountains of Mourne.
The championship is a six round series with four best scores to count. In addition there are bonus points for starting every round. After round five, the leader board now reads O’Connell on 101 points and Reid with 79, a deficit of 22. When all the mathematics are done, the reality is that O’ Connell needs just one point from the Down rally-which he gets for registering as a starter-even if Reid is the top National Forest finisher. There will also be a fight for third fourth and fifth overall, while many of the classes have yet to be decided. It ain’t over until the fat lady sings.
It is a similar story in the Hankook Northern Ireland Championship, with contenders Stuart Biggerstaff and Mark Donnelly expected to continue their tussle for the 2010 title. Dromara driver Biggerstaff, in only his first year in the sport, holds a 7 point advantage at the top of the points table from Omagh’s Mark Donnelly, with both the junior drivers improving and gaining experience as the season has progressed.

Kenny McKinstry, guided by Bangor’s Noel Orr, heads the entry list for the 2010 Down Rally as more than 50 competitors from all over Ireland make their way to the start ramp in Lower Square, Castlewellan on Saturday 23rd October.
McKinstry returns to the Down Rally after his maiden victory in 2009, fending off the challenge of multiple Circuit of Ireland winner Derek McGarrity to win the event by over 50 seconds after 8 stages.
Seeded at number 2 are the reigning Hankook NI Rally Champions, Derek McGarrity and James McKee in a DMG prepared Subaru Impreza WRC.
McGarrity, who used a Ford Focus on the 2009 event, comes to Castlewellan determined to win the event after having to settle for second last year behind the McKinstry Subaru.
Numbers three and four sees the leading contenders from the Petro Systems Irish National Forest Series which makes its first appearance on a Northern Ireland event for the first time in the Championships twenty year history.
Number three seed Pat O’Connell, from Co Tipperary, is poised to get his hands on the National Crown on Saturday evening, although John Reid, starting at number four has a mathematical chance of snatching the title should something prevent O’Connell from starting the event. Both crews will be hoping to end the season on a high after a close fought 2010 campaign.
Colin Britton and Arthur Kierans start the event at number five. Britton has made appearances in both the NI and the Southern Forest Championships this year, finishing 4th overall on the Donegal Forest Rally and he was lying as high a 2nd overall in the recent Bushwhacker Rally before being forced to retire with mechanical issues.
Number six sees the Hankook Northern Ireland Championship leader Stuart Biggerstaff make his first appearance on the County Down event. 22 year old Biggerstaff, in only his first season in the sport finds himself with a 7 point lead in the championship with one round left to go after the Down Rally.
Starting at number seven is 2008 NI Rally Champion, Connor McCloskey. McCloskey, assisted by Francis Regan, won the 2008 Down Rally on their way to becoming the youngest ever NI Champions. They start at the wheel of a Mitsubishi Lancer after a difficult return to competition on the Bushwhacker Rally in September.
Mark Donnelly will start the event with number eight on the door of his Mitsubishi Lancer. Trailing Biggerstaff by 7 points in the Hankook series, Donnelly holds a slight advantage over his rival as he competed on the event last year in a Fiesta ST and he will be anxious to resume the battle which saw the two young chargers finish the last round in Omagh on identical times after 40 miles of flat out driving.
Highest placed two wheel drive competitor is Frank Kelly at number nine in his rapid Ford Escort RS. His sideways driving style always entertains the spectators and his speed will see him finish well in the overall leader board come Saturday evening.
Rounding out the top ten is Cyril Doherty in a Subaru Impreza Group N. Cyril has racked up some fine results during the year to see him lying in a comfortable 3rd place overall in the Hankook NI Series.
Other notable inclusions in the entry list include Raymond Mason and Mark Barnett, seeded just outside the top ten, and some unfamiliar names to the Northern Ireland Rally scene who will be engrossed in their own private battles during the day. Jeromy Drislane, Vincent McAree, Patsy Keenan, who makes the trip from Atlanta in the USA for the event, Christy Carey, Mark Murphy, Gerard Lucey to name a few make the journey north to sample the Down Rally stages for the first time.
Local interest includes Banbridge’s John and Gavin Devlin in their Talbot Sunbeam, Ballykinlar’s Sean Warnock, Christian Cochrane from Downpatrick and Niall Branniff and Barry Savage from Ballynahinch.
The 2010 event will follow a similar format to last year, with the start in Lower Square in Castlewellan at 9 am with 4 stages planned in the morning and 4 further stages in the afternoon before the champagne finish back at the Lower Square around 4.45pm. The cars will return after every two stages for service in Castlewellan Forest Park.
The organisers have also produced a free Spectator Information Guide which is available from the Kings Inn, Lower Square, Castlewellan from Friday 22nd October.
Followers can also download a Spectator Guide from the event website at which will give them all the information they need to get to, and safely watch the action.
The event will also enjoy regular radio updates, just after the hourly news on Downtown and CoolFm Radio, courtesy of Carsport Magazine and the event will be filmed for a one hour show on Motors TV later in the year.
Anyone wishing to marshal on the event should contact the Chief Marshal on 07834315859 / +447834315859
The organisers will provide a hot meal and a gift to those who assist with the safe running of the event.

With the list of entries for the 2010 F&M Contracts Down Rally now beginning to take shape, three Northern Ireland Rally Champions have already secured their place in the starting list.
Current NI Champion Derek McGarrity has indicated his intention to return to the Castlewellan based event and he will be joined by the 2008 title holder and '08 event winner, Conor McCloskey and the '88/'89 Champion, and '09 Down Rally winner, Kenny McKinstry.
Both the 2010 Hankook MSA NI Championship contenders, Mark Donnelly and Stuart Biggerstaff have also joined the growing list of crews who will tackle the 8 gravel stages (approx 40 stage miles) in the Tollymore, Rostrevor, Drumkeeragh and Castlewellan Forests.
The Petro Systems Southern National Forest Rally Championship also goes down to the wire in Castlewellan.
Pat O’Connell in his Evo 9 and John Reid at the wheel of his Corolla WRC have been tremendously competitive all season. O’ Connell won the first trio of rallies (Mitchelstown, Carrick on Suir and Moonraker) while Reid was runner up on each occasion. Just six points separated them heading to round four in Donegal, but disaster struck Reid when he retired with broken steering and it looked as if his championship aspirations were doomed, especially as .O’Connell finished third. Suddenly the gap opened in O’Connell’s favour, but the roles were reversed on the next round in Cork when Reid was the victor and O Connell was third again. Reid could breathe again in the knowledge that he had a mathematical chance in the mountains of Mourne.

The 2009 Down Rally was won by Banbridge’s Kenny McKinstry who took a maiden victory on his first attempt at the local event.
Kenny held off the challenge of current NI Rally Champion, Derek McGarrity, to win by a margin of 52 seconds with Donegal driver Donagh Kelly in third.
