"The weekend Midland Motor Club two day Auto Cross event which took place on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th of August in Scramogue, Co. Roscommon was a great success where a large number of spectators turned out to enjoy the glorious sunshine and fantastic action over both days. Popular Shannonside radio presenter and local man Eugene Murphy was there to support the event again this year and ran a gripping commentary keeping the spectators up to the second with the live action.
In the D & B National Auto Cross championship Christopher Culleton, the Co Laois man, remains unbeaten this year in his Opel Special and took first place overall and class winner. Co. Kerry man Ger Brennan took first overall in the saloon cars section with his powerful Fiesta and also took his class win. Midland Motor Club members had a great turnout competing on both days. Prize giving took place in Leavey’s Bar on Sunday evening.
After Sunday’s run Class 1A winner Tommy Donlon, second place Sean Mullervy and third Dessie Brady. Class 2A, first David Kellegher and second Ciaran Dwyer. Popular Class 2B saw Alan Gibbons take first, Joe Lenehan second with Mark McDermott in third all three sharing a hired and entertaining MarkII escort over both days. Class 4B in a special buggy, first Sam Johnson and second Chris Kelly. Junior club members Amy Faughnan, Stephan Faughnan, Noel Mulvihill and Bryan Mc Cormack received trophies in their respective classes and Killian Lenehan received the Novice award for his performance in his fathers Opel Tigra.
A raffle and fundraiser took place during the 2 day event and over €1,200 was raised in sponsorship for the Mizen to Malin cycle. This fundraiser was organised by Club members Enda Mc Loughlin and Barry Costello who will take part in the cycle. The cycle is organised by the Garda Cycling Club, Donegal and this years cycle is in memory of Garda Robbie McCallion and Garda Gary McLoughlin, (brother of Enda) who both lost their lives while on duty and are sadly missed by their families and friends. The cycle will be carried out over six days starting at Mizen Head and finishing at Malin Head on the 11th Sept followed by a dinner reception. The cycle is in aid of two charities, which were chosen by the McCallion and McLoughlin families. The charities chosen are - The Beaumont Hospital & Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin.
A donation will also be made to Letterkenny Gereral Hospital. Enda, a very successful and well known Rally driver with several wins in his Rally class also put up for auction a navigator drive with him in next years Midland Motor Club Stages rally which sold for €500 on Saturday night. Thank you to all who contributed to this worthy cause.
