The Sepam Tipperary Stonethrowers Rally on Sunday next offers top seed and current Dunlop National Rally Championship leader, Niall Maguire (Subaru WRC) an opportunity to gain an important victory as the series enters a crucial phase.
With the points system allowing the best eight scores from ten events, the Clonmel based event is the final round before dropped scores come into effect.
Maguire, a former triple champion, is undoubtedly the most consistent performer
thus far having finished all seven rounds. However, with just one outright victory (on his home event) from the previous seven rounds, the Monaghan man is acutely aware of the situation. "I really need to win in Clonmel, but it is a tall order. Mel (Evans) is very hard to beat, as are both Derek McGarrity and Kevin Barrett. In terms of the Dunlop championship, the situation will be much clearer on Sunday evening."
The Clonmel event hasn't always been kind to Maguire, in 2004, he crashed heavily, more recently, he was denied victory by a puncture on the final corner of the event.
Meanwhile, Welshman, Mel Evans (Subaru WRC) is the driver very much in form. His recent victory in the Sligo Rally was his fourth of the campaign that also includes wins in Nenagh, Tralee and Claremorris. Another victory would edge him closer to becoming the first overseas driver to win the Vard Memorial Trophy.
With non-finishes in both Claremorris (Mayo) and Sligo events, championship contender Derek McGarrity (Subaru WRC) will be pleased that there are no further Dunlop rounds in the west of Ireland. Indeed, the final three events including the Stonethrowers, are in Munster with the Clare Rally in Ennis and the Skibbereen based Fastnet Rally concluding the series. The Glengormley driver, who won the Circuit of Kerry on a tie-break and took top points in Cavan, knows that he cannot afford another non-finish.
Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) may be out of contention for the overall award but his performances can still play a major role in the destiny of the title crown.
Denied victory in the Circuit of Kerry, he has the pace to gain his first Dunlop win of the season, his finish position could have repercussions for the title-chasing trio of Maguire, Evans and McGarrity.
The one hundred plus entry also features Tyrone's, Seamus Leonard in a Subaru WRC, former Patterson's RallyNews Group N award winner, Alan Ring (Mitsubishi) and current leader of the showroom category, Sean Flanagan (Subaru).
Current rally.ie champion, Mike Quinn renews his rivalry with fellow Mk. 2 Ford Escort ace, Declan Boyle, who has moved into the lead of the category -
nine points ahead of Ed Synan with Quinn a further 17 points in arrears. The Modified entry also features Lisburn's, Wesley Patterson (Ford Escort).
Former Dunlop regular, Down's, David Armstrong (Ford Escort) makes a rare appearance in the series, he is seeded at number eleven ahead of Mark Nangle (Subaru), Eoin Doyle (Subaru WRC), Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi) and Ed Synan (Escort). Waterford's, Paul Mulcahy is expected to debut his new Toyota Starlet.
Elsewhere, the entry includes Welsh driver, Gwyn Thomas (Ford Puma), John Hickey (Subaru), David Percy (Escort), Stephen Cullen (Subaru), Shane Maguire (Subaru), Eugene Meegan (Mitsubishi), Lloyd Hutchinson (Mini), Joe Connolly (Escort) and Mark Sheehan (Citroen C2R2).
Local drivers hoping to secure a strong result include Andrew Fanning (Ford Puma), Michael Ormond (Honda Civic), Tom Sheehan (Nissan Micra), Kieran Hayes (Peugeot), Collum Browne (Honda Civic), Willie Laurence Escort), Paul Quinlan and Jack Dolan (Ford Escort).
The nine stage Sepam Tipperary Stonethrowers Rally is based at the Clonmel Park Hotel - co-sponsors along with Andrew Fanning Motor Factors. Servicing is at the Powerstown Racecourse.
