Tom Cave takes maiden rally outright win on Coracle Rally

Posted: August 26, 2010 11:21 AM

Teenage rally driver Tom Cave took the first outright rally win of his career this weekend, when he won the Coracle Rally, based at the Sweet Lamb Rally Complex in Wales. The youngster was driving a Group N Subaru Impreza, as his regular Proton Satria Neo S2000 is yet to be repaired following its engine failure on the Ypres Rally earlier this month.

Tom was using the event to stay match-fit while he waits for the Proton to be repaired. He has been using the Impreza throughout the summer to gain experience of 4WD rally cars, albeit with a very different driving style and characteristics.

The seven-stage event based at Sweet Lamb ran over one day and Tom was bang on the pace from the off. Despite admitting to the wrong tyre choice on the first stage, he was still five seconds faster than car number one and two seconds faster on the second stage.

However, brake issues on the Impreza at the event mid-point meant that he dropped time and to second overall. But this simply spurred Tom on and he and the Mitsubishi Evo spent the remainder of the morning swapping times.

However, the pressure eased considerably when the Evo's transmission failed and Tom re-took the overall lead. By this point, he had a 50second advantage, so was able to back off slightly to conserve the lead and take his maiden overall win.

Speaking after the event, Tom said; "That was a really good day and a great result - I'm really pleased. It's a bit of a shame that Martin [London, Car No.1] had problems, as we were having a great scrap and were fighting all day.

"I settled in quickly to the Impreza and found it really useful to have the mileage and of course, the result. We're doing the Harry Flatters rally next weekend, over the Epynt Ranges, so the DMS guys are swapping from gravel to tarmac spec, so we'll see how we go again on that event."
