TIM McNULTY, co-driven by Paul Kiely, took his Subaru WRC to victory in the Cavan Rally, the fifth round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship. They finished 13 seconds ahead of Derek McGarrity/James McKee (Subaru WRC), who took maximum Dunlop points. In a final stage decider, Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry edged out fellow Subaru WRC crew, Mel Evans/Patrick Walsh for third albeit on a tie-break. Daniel McKenna/Andrew Greenan (Escort) won the Modified category and Gary Jennings/David Moynihan (Mitsubishi) won Group N.
Dunlop contender, Kevin Barrett was the first retirement, he never made it to the stage start as his Subaru bowed out with a broken release bearing.
McNulty was quickest through the opening test at Lavey where he led McGarrity by six seconds. Daniel McKenna (Escort) set a cracking time to move into third overall - three seconds further behind. Evans and Maguire were fourth and fifth respectively.
The second test wasn't run due to a bereavement. On S.S. 3, McNulty spun, stalled and wedged his Subaru between the hedges. In the process, he slipped to second as McGarrity moved into a 15 second lead. Niall Maguire and Mel Evans shared third place - a second behind McNulty. McKenna continued to blaze a trail, he was the top Modified competitor and was fourth in general classification.
Gary Jennings (Mitsubishi) led Group N, the Fermanagh man made some minor adjustments to the suspension set-up, which he remarked was too soft on the opening test.
On the repeat of the two stages, McNulty was the dominant driver and having taken 13 seconds out of McGarrity on Stage 4, he moved into the lead after Stage 6, albeit by a single second.
Evans was a further 26 seconds behind in third as the top three reported trouble free runs. Niall Maguire held fourth spot, four seconds adrift of Evans, at the Cavan service halt the Dunlop championship leader remarked, "I'm going as hard as I can." Another Monaghan ace that was setting a strong pace was Daniel McKenna, who was fifth. Although his Mitsubishi ended the third stage with a faulty spark plug, Jennings retained the lead of the Group N category. At the final service halt, he was sixth. Elsewhere, the top ten also included Declan Boyle, Adrian Hetherington and Rodney Wilton, all in Ford Escorts and Eugene Meegan (Mitsubishi). Earlier, Boyle struggled with transmission woes while Wilton experienced an altercation with the scenery on the first stage that also signalled the retirement of local ace, Russell Woods (Escort).
McNulty powered his way through the seventh stage and extended his lead over McGarrity to 12 seconds Meanwhile, in the race for third, Maguire closed to within two seconds of Evans.
McNulty, who continued to tweak the settings of his Subaru, also set the fastest time through the penultimate test and set a comfortable pace on the final test to take victory. McGarrity admitted he decided to concentrate on annexing top Dunlop points (McNulty wasn't registered) and he duly went on to clinch the maximum 20 points. There was no change in the positions of Evans and Maguire, who set identical times on the test. However, on the final stage, Maguire was two seconds quicker and secured third on a tie-break. McKenna had an untroubled run to fifth overall and winner of the Modified category.
Declan Boyle, also in an Escort, was sixth. A puncture on each of the final three stages cost Gary Jennings vital seconds and he was edged out of sixth on the tie-break rule. The top ten was completed by Sean Flanagan (Subaru), Eugene Meegan (Mitsubishi) and Samuel Kelso (Escort). Neil Pierce (Honda Civic) won the Dunlop "Driver of the Day" award.

Dunlop National Rally Championship leader, Niall Maguire (Subaru WRC) makes the relatively short trip across to Cavan on Sunday next for the fifth round of the national campaign. The former triple national champion is currently eight points ahead of the Dunlop Championship chasing duo of Derek McGarrity and Mel Evans with another title contender, Kevin Barrett 28 points off the pace.
Of the title chasing quartet, Maguire has been the most consistent and is the only one to have finished all four rounds to date. On home ground last time out, Maguire took his first victory in the current campaign. The Monaghan ace also won this event last season, although it wasn't a counting round of the Dunlop series on that occasion.
Irish Tarmac Championship regular, Tim McNulty (Subaru WRC) will line up behind Maguire, the Meath driver is using the nine-stage Cavan event as a shakedown for the forthcoming Donegal International Rally.
With two events in the Dunlop series over the next two weekends - the Circuit of Munster takes place on Sunday week - the title aspirations of any, or perhaps all, of the Dunlop quartet could be decided. In particular, it is key time for Kevin Barrett. With the series based on the best eight scores from the ten events, the Maynooth driver has already two non-finishes to his credit and really needs to annex major points in Cavan. Barrett has led two of the events, the Circuit of Kerry and Monaghan but has yet to record a victory in 2010.
Welsh ace, Mel Evans won the opening two rounds, the Nenagh Rally and the
Mayo Rally and was third in Monaghan. He is seeded at four and will be followed by Derek McGarrity, a winner of the Circuit of Kerry. McGarrity, like Evans, has one non-finish to his credit.
Meanwhile, Gary Jennings in his Mitsubishi is the top Group N entry, the Fermanagh ace should be able to mix it with the WR regulars.
Monaghan's, Daniel McKenna (Ford Escort), who won the first Dunlop "Driver of the Day" award in Nenagh, heads the two-wheel drive contingent. On the recent Monaghan event, he was second overall after the opening stage but later retired having damaged his Ford Escort following a heavy landing over a jump. His battle with fellow top ten seeds, Rodney Wilton, Manus Kelly and Declan Boyle, all in Ford Escorts, should be intriguing. Kelly was fifth overall in Monaghan and is second in the race for honours in the rally.ie category for two-wheel drive competitors that is being led at present by Lloyd Hutchinson (Mini).
Elsewhere, the modified entry also features Russell Woods, Adrian Hetherington, Trevor Mulligan, Mervyn Deane and Victor Hunter, all in Ford Escorts and Raymond Conlon (Toyota Corolla).
The Group N category includes Danny McBride, Sam Moffett, in Mitsubishi's, Sean Flanagan (Subaru) and Trevor Bustard (Mitsubishi), who leads the way in the chase of the Patterson's RallyNews Group N award
Other Cavan entries are Gordon Rogers, Mervyn Wedlock, Raymond Drury and Thomas McGovern, all in Ford Escorts.

Two rounds down, the HASS Border Rally Championship remains wide open as we head into round 3, the Cavan Stages Rally.
Predicting a winner of the popular class based series at this stage of the season is next to impossible, with many a stage mile yet to be tackled before the conclusion of the Donegal Harvest Rally in October. What we do know though is that scoring on every round is the key to success on this series, and therefore those four crews that have taken the maximum twenty class points in the opening two rounds have already put themselves in a great position to be in with a shout of overall honours come season finale.
In class 9 Lloyd Hutchinson and Kevin Flanagan from Wicklow have been setting the category alight this season in their indecently rapid Mini. Indeed class 9 is proving to be one of the more competitive categories this year with the Escort of Pa Bellow and Willie Fitzpatrick waiting to pounce on any slip-up from the Mini crew. Fellow Meath men and reigning champions Thomas Carolan and Declan Smith are third in class but already look to have their work cut out to retain their title.
In class 10 Leitrim’s Enda McLoughlin is another on fine form having taken two maximum scores to date. His Escort leads the Corolla of John Kelly by two points while Kelly’s co-driver Adrian Flynn leads the co-driver’s category in this class.
Class 12 has been dominated by the Escort of Gerry Smyth and Gregory McQuillan from Monaghan in the two events to date, while the only other competitors to hold the maximum twenty points at this stage of the season are the Donegal Escort crew of Victor Hunter and Michael Doherty competing in class 13.
Just off the overall leaderboard but very much in contention for championship honours are a host of crews. In class two Stephen Bradley and Jonathan Gallagher from Donegal are Best of the Rest on nineteen points in a Honda Civic. Class 6 has been the preserve of Sligo’s David Leonard and Adrian Foley, a lack of class competiton in Mayo the only reason the Citroen Saxo pairing are just off the overall leaderboard. Also on eighteen points are the class 11 Cavan crew of Mark Wedlock and Adam Kinkade in an Escort. Don’t discount former champion Niall Maguire either, who with Enda Sherry came so close to winning the championship last year. The Monaghan Subaru duo are handily placed on eighteen points in class 8 following their overall victory on their home rally.
Other class leaders at this stage of the season include Trevor and Kenny Bustard from Donegal on sixteen points in class 4, while on fifteen points are class 5’s Eamonn McCafferty, Anthony Masterson / Andrew Browne in class 7, and Damian Gallagher and Paul Garry in the ultra-competitive class 14. In class 3 championship regulars Pakie and Calum Duffy once again lead the way.
All still to play for indeed. And with round four of the championship, the Mourne Rally, taking place only six days after the Cavan Stages Rally, it could be all change at the head of the HASS Border Rally Championship heading into the summer recess.
