ALMC Stages Rally Marshal’s Prize Winners

ALMC Motor Club chief marshal Richie Tallon has been travelling the country presenting the lucky marshals who won prizes for their valuable contribution to this year’s ALMC Stages Rally. Without the efforts of all the marshals who attend the event and lend their support the event would not be possible, through the ALMC marshals prize competition it gives the club the opportunity to reward a small number for their efforts. "The work the marshals do on the event is invaluable and without their continued support rallying would not exist, in order to successfully run a one day stages rally it requires over 130 marshals which is not an easy task. A big thanks to all those who helped on this year’s event and we look forward to working with them again next year" commented COC for the event Noel Devlin.

The prizes included signed photographs of up and coming rally driver Robert Barrable in action in his Skoda Fabia S2000, a die cast model donated by Homeflair Drogheda and a full set of Robert Barrable Rally Team clothing. Well done to all the prize winners and thanks to all who helped to make the ALMC Stages Rally a successful event.

Satisfactory Run for Shrimpton in Louth

It was a last minute decision, that saw the DJ Rally Hire / MB / GGH Hire / Millers Oils / JTS Cushions / BBAG Extreme Lounging / Team PR Reilly Citroen C2R2 of Joe Shrimpton and Ciaran Geaney place an entry for the 2011 ALMC City North Hotel Stages Rally. The idea was to get some more mileage in the car for the next round of the Citroen Racing Trophy Ireland, namely the Todds Leap Ulster Rally next month.

With easily accessible stages in an around the County Louth area, and Service in Drogheda at the TellLabs Factory, the ALMC Motor Club had put on a very compact and enjoyable event. This was borne out by Ciaran on the Saturday evening at the City North Hotel when he described the stages to come on the Sunday, “Its going to be a testing event here, with Three stages done three times during the course of the day. The stages themselves are fast, smooth and clean and there is only gravel at the odd junction to note. If it rains tomorrow it could be tricky with the fact so many of the stages have smooth roads”

Sunday dawned, and it brought changeable conditions for all the crews and on the opening stage Joe and Ciaran set a time of 9.01 which left them 6th in Class, but this included an overshoot towards the end of the Stage that cost them around 20 seconds. Stage 2 saw the crew start the stage 19 secs behind Peter Barrable and Barry McNulty also in a C2R2, but another spin in the damp conditions saw them lose anther 20 seconds to the leaders, with the changeable conditions not helping tyre choice.

At the first service in Drogheda, and now up to 5th in class Joe said
“I am happy where we are to be honest, we are using the event to get some miles and practice in for the Ulster in a few weeks and today is about learning the car, and trying some changes to the tyres and suspension in this sort of environment. The stages are good and we have had a couple of overshoots and dropped time, but there are still six stages to do, so there is loads of time for things to happen, and the car is good”

Over the second loop of three stages in the Lough area, Joe and Ciaran were having a great battle with Peter Barrable, who was keen to impress on his home event, and by the time the cars returned to Drogheda again the gap was now at 25 secs and the pair were still 5th in Class. The skies by now were brighter and the crew were hopeful of a good afternoon as the stages where showing signs of drying out, a fact borne out by Ciaran in Service “Its been an ok day really, but the roads will catch out the unwary. There are still damp and wet patches about, and at the end of the day, we are here to learn for the Ulster and record some settings which we can use, so we want to finish and hopefully in a decent position. Joe has tried a couple of different things here today, which have made changes we have noted for the future, so all in all we are happy and looking forward to this afternoon.”

As the crews headed out for the final loop the skies cleared somewhat, and the sun came out drying the roads, and Joe and Ciaran set about making time up on Peter Barrable. On Stage 7 they took 5 seconds back from him, and continued this on Stage 8 by adding another 3 seconds, meaning as they headed into the last stage of the day, all that stood between them was 17 seconds. At the end of Stage 9, though it was a delighted Joe and Ciaran that crossed the line faster than Peter Barrable though only by the odd second, but they held onto 5th in Class and 25th overall.

Joe was happy with the way the day went and said
“It really is a great event, very well run and good fun with great Stages. We had a great battle today with Peter, on his home event, and we have learnt a lot as well to take with us to the Ulster next month. Derek as usual has done a great job on the car and kept us going all day.”

Team Manager Willie Woods added
“Its been a tricky day, but Joe and Ciaran have done well today, and Derek a great job in running the car, along with all his boys which is great, after all the work we gave them to do before and after Donegal. It’s a nice result for Joes sponsors too, so its good to give something back to them as well.”

REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship - GASS GUZZLES MAXIMUM POINTS!…

Darren Gass registered for the REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship at Signing-On for the fifth round, the ALMC Stages Rally, and came away with an outright win on the Dublin-based event. Driving a hired Subaru Impreza WRC, the 23-year old from Co. Armagh admitted to a few spins as he acclimatised himself to the unfamiliar car but managed to stay out of the trouble that affected so many of the other front-runners to take maximum Championship points at his first attempt.

2010 ALMC Stages winner Damian Cole had to be content with runner-up spot this time but, with James Morgan reading the notes in his Ford Focus WRC, the result strengthens his lead in the Championship as it passes the halfway stage. The weather was such that, as is so often the case, tyre choice was critical as parts of the stages became very slippery following intermittent rain showers. For the second year running, Simon Mauger took third place in his Ford Escort MkII, this time with regular co-driver Brian Cammack helping to stave off the determined efforts of a whole host of very quick and well-driven Escorts, not least of which were those UK entries contesting the Millington Escort Challenge.
At the City North Hotel finish, Mauger described his event as ‘not a good day at the office’ but he maintains his 2nd overall position in the points and next up is the Tyneside Stages, on the Otterburn Ranges, which he won last year….

So, the only visit to Ireland by the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship produced a 1-2-3 result, but it could so easily have been a greater monopoly of the top placings, were it not for a string of mishaps that put paid to the aspirations of several other visitors from the UK.

David Kynaston/Andy Russell were the first to go – hopes were high of a good result in their Audi A3 Quattro but, on the startline of the first of the nine stages of the day, the 2006 & 2008 Asphalt Champion dropped the clutch and the input shaft to the gearbox snapped. Game over!...

The 2007 title holder, Steve Simpson, didn’t go much further. He and Patrick Walsh were also soon reduced to the rank of spectators when their Impreza WRC broke a driveshaft, while David Hardie/John McCulloch’s event came to an abrupt halt when their particular Impreza hit a tree head-on.
Local favourite Robert Barrable, who was another to register for the REIS Championship just prior to the start of the ALMC Stages, saw his Skoda Fabia S2000 grind to a halt on the second stage with one or more burnt-out spark plugs and Mark Jasper’s trip over from Stafford to drive his MG Metro 6R4 came to nought when the car’s head gasket failed soon after the start. At least co-driver Don Whyatt didn’t have far to go home – he lives in a suburb of Dublin!

So, just who did finish? Chris Lloyd/Gerwyn Barry brought their Melvyn Evans-prepared Ford Escort home in 13th place overall to take the up to 2.1 litre Millington Escort Challenge award, ahead of Tommi Graham/Mike Bailey’s version, while recent Millington engine converts, Pete Rayner/Richard Bonner were 2nd in the up to 2.5 litre section, behind Simon Mauger.

The two Championship-registered drivers in Ford Puma S1600s suffered vastly differing fortunes – Tipperary’s Andrew Fanning brought his home to a class win while Roger Donnan lost a wheel just over a mile into the first stage after the studs sheared. Noel Kelleher’s Honda EG6 survived the rigours of the day to take top Class N2 points, while Peter Taylor/Andrew Roughead took a class win on the event in their Renault Clio after surviving a front puncture during the afternoon.

Due to the pressure of work on his farm, Rod Bennett has been an infrequent visitor to the Championship in the past eighteen months. However, he and Henry Richardson returned on the recent Rally of the Midlands, only to suffer the indignity of losing one of their Fiat Punto S1600’s wheels after the studs sheared. Undaunted, they made the trip over to Ireland and, almost from the start, were plagued with electrical problems – the car stopping altogether at one point. They struggled on, losing shed loads of time, becoming increasingly aware that an alternator change had to be undertaken at the final service in Drogheda. Unsure whether they had gone OTL while the task was completed, they set off on the final loop of stages and, at last able to fully use the car’s power, they stayed in the running, albeit with a couple of minutes’ road penalties, to finally make the finish. For his efforts, Rod was awarded the ‘John Horton Motorsport Management Star Performance’ salver – a ‘just’ cause, if ever there was one!

Further retirements during the day included James Belton whose Impreza WRC was forced out after a stone became wedged on the sumpguard and the constant pounding punched a hole in the oil filter. Paul Manton’s Ford Fiesta ST joined the list with mechanical bothers and, after a promising start, Graeme Colfer’s Citroen C2R2 failed to make the finish either.

As previously mentioned, the next round of the REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship is the Tyneside Stages on Sunday 31st July.

Gass/Cullen Win ALMC Stages Rally 2011

Darren Gass and co-driver Andrew Cullen have won the 2011 City North Hotel ALMC Stages Rally, with last years winner and leading REIS MSA Asphalt championship crew of Damian Cole and James Morgan in their Ford Focus WRC05 second. The second place result for Cole extends his lead in the championship to seven points. Third was another of the UK competitors Simon Mauger in his Ford Escort MKII who finished third the same position he finished in on last years event.

An overcast and breezy morning greeted competitors as they took to the tarmac stages around the Louth and Meath countryside. Through the opening loop of three stages Darren Gass in the ex Niall Maguire Subaru Impreza S10 WRC set down an early marker for the following competitors posting fastest stage times through the open two stages with rival Cole taking fastest time on special stage three to leave Darren Gass completing the loop with a lead of 28 seconds. The opening stages of the event had a devastating effect on the top ten with number two seed and local driver Robert Barrable in his Skoda Fabia retiring at the beginning of the White Mountain stage with a broken spark plug, meanwhile third seed the UK crew of Stephen Simpson and Patrick Walsh broke a half shaft ending their rally before it had really begun. Other early retirements included Mark Jasper in the Metro 6R4 with ALMC co-driver Don Whyatt alongside and David Kynaston and Andy Russell in the Audi A3.

The second loop of stages Darren took up where he had left off with a fastest stage time nine seconds faster than Damien Cole, Damien took fastest times through stages five and six but the margin to Gass out front was twenty eight seconds with the closing loop of three stages remaining. Simon Maugher in third was finding it difficult to match the times of the WRC crews out front on the fast stages returning to service two minutes and ten seconds behind the leader and over a minute and a half off Cole in second. The crews headed into the three remaining stages with the finish in mind and the championship points opportunity for Cole an incentive to bring the car home. The leader board remained as it was and Darren and co-driver Andrew Cullen returned to the City North Hotel as overall winners. Group N was won by Josh Moffett and Lennon Domhnall in their Mitsubishi Lancer EVO9, finishing fifty four seconds ahead of Paddy McVeigh and Stephen OHanlon in their Subaru Impreza N12B with Mark Nangle third also in a Subaru. The best ALMC driver award went to Peter Barrable in his Citreon C2R2 which also earned them third in class six. ALMC Stages Rally COC Noel Devlin commented at the finish we had a great days rallying today, well done to Darren and Andrew on winning and thank you to all the competitors who took the time to come and compete in the event, I have also to thank the hard working stages team in ALMC without them this event would not happen

Stars Line Up for ALMC Stages Rally!

The start of the 2011 ALMC Stages Rally is only hours away, with all the competitors busy completing their Reece of the special stages with the rally kicking off on Sunday morning at 9.30 when last year’s winner Damian Cole sporting number one on his Ford Focus WRC will lead the cars off the start ramp. The event based at the City North Hotel is a counting round of the REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, the Loughran Signs Midlands East Rally Championship and the Millington Escort Challenge plus it will feature historic and junior classes.

Damian who currently leads the UK Asphalt championship after four rounds returns to the Irish tarmac stages to take on local talent and IRC point’s scorer Robert Barrable in his Skoda Fabia S2000 who takes over from his father Michael a previous winner of the ALMC event. Following Barrable off the start ramp is Stephen Simpson in his Subaru Impreza WRC with Simon Maugher who finished third on last year’s event in his lighting quick Ford Escort MkII. Next up will be Darren Gass in his S10 Subaru Impreza, Darren a late entry on the rally will be accompanied by local co-driver Andrew Cullen who makes a return to a WRC car after a four year layoff. Brian Brogan from Donegal makes the trip to this year’s ALMC event and will line out ahead of fellow Ford Escort MkII local driver Pat Donegan in a similar machine, they will be competing for the ALMC Mk2 Escort challenge. David Kynaston and Andy Russell in their Audi A3 make a return to the event following their late retirement due to mechanical failure just twelve months ago.

David Hardie from Scotland and Irish driver Stephen Cullen are both entered in their respective Impreza’s, Mark Jasper with ALMC club member Don Whyatt alongside close out the top ten in their Metro 6R4, they will be hoping to make it to the finish of this year’s rally having retired in 2010 after losing a wheel during the second loop of stages. Other notable entries include new comer to the UK Asphalt championship James Belton better known for his gravel exploits he takes to the tarmac stages for only his second outing and hoping for a strong finish. Maurice Moffett in his rear wheel drive Toyota Starlet is sure to entertain the crowds in his usual spectacular fashion, he will be closely followed by no less than four Escorts driven by Jay Stanley from the UK, David Armstrong, Liam Howlett and Trevor Culbert. Leading the Citreon C2R2 competitors is local ace Graeme Colfer and co-driver Dave Woodcock who will do battle with fellow club member Peter Barrable driving last year’s UK and Irish Citreon Trophy winning car.

The first car will depart the ramp at the City North Hotel at 9.30 with the first stage starting at 10.30; service is based in the Industrial Estate Donore Road, Drogheda with the competing cars due in service at the end of the first loop at 12.15.

REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship - Round 5 : ALMC Stages Rally

Included for the first time last year, the REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship once again ventures across the Irish Sea on 17th July for the ALMC Stages Rally. Based at the City North Hotel, on the outskirts of Dublin, the event was voted ‘Best Event in the Championship’ at its first attempt in 2010 and Damian Cole, who won it outright, is looking forward to returning. He and co-driver James Morgan will lead the field in their Ford Focus WRC and will not only be up against a very strong UK contingent, numbering twice that of last year, but will also face a stiff challenge from the ‘locals’.

Joining the defending REIS Champion will be the 2007 title holder Steve Simpson, accompanied by 2010 Irish National Champion Co-driver Patrick Walsh (from Aberystwyth!) in his Subaru Impreza WRC, plus 2006 & 2008 winners David Kynaston & Andy Russell will be making an all-too-infrequent appearance in their Audi A3 Quattro. The car has endured a frustrating 18 months with a number of niggling problems that have resulted in retirements which, hopefully, have now been eradicated.

As the MSA Championship reaches the halfway point, the title is still anybody’s. 22 points cover the top six places and, with 25 available on each round for a ‘win’, anything can happen between now and the end of the season in October. Fresh from their victory on Rally of the Midlands, Simon Mauger/Brian Cammack lead a host of MkII Escorts that will be chasing both overall Championship and Millington Escort Challenge points. They are joined in Ireland by fellow Escort crews Chris Lloyd/Gerwyn Barry, Tommi Graham/Mike Bailey, Pete Rayner/ Richard Bonner and Jay Stanley/Paul Williams.

After the first three rounds, David Hardie/John McCulloch were holding 2nd overall in the Championship points table but, having led Rally of the Midlands overnight, their Impreza developed a misfire that steadily worsened and could not be rectified in the time allowed. Consequently, they were on their way back to south-west Scotland earlier than anticipated. Now, as one of the mainland crews with the shortest journey, they will be hoping to regain the initiative in Dublin.

Having rejoined the Championship on Rally of the Midlands after an 18-month lay-off, only for a wheel to come off their Fiat Punto S1600, Rod Bennett/Henry Richardson need a finish to open their account, while Roger Donnan’s outing on the Manx Telecom Rally was similarly short-lived after his Ford Puma went out on the second stage.

Unfortunately, not able to make the trip are John Stone whose Skoda Fabia WRC’s engine put a ‘leg out of bed’ on Rally of the Midlands, causing an under-bonnet fire, and the irrepressible John Indri has been unable to repair his Darrian T90 GTR in time following an ‘off’ last time out.

Three stages, each run three times, form the meat of the ALMC Stages Rally and the organisers tell us that they will be different from last year, nullifying any possible advantage for those who have been before. The first car leaves the start at 9.15am on Sunday 18th July and returns to the finish at City North Hotel at 6.30pm that evening.

"ALMC would like to announce details of the prizes available to marshals for this years Rally on 17th July. As always, marshals are a vital link in the chain of safety for both spectators and competitors, and ALMC are indebted to all marshals that will be assisting the Motor Club over the weekend. We will welcome a large number of marshals from all the Motor Clubs whose rallies we have assisted at this year so far, but as always, as many as possible are needed.

2. A 1/18th scale model of one of the latest Sunstar Subaru WRC's from Rally Monza 2009 (Fabio Babini), which will be supplied in a display case.

3. A selection of Skoda Motorsport team clothing, including Rally Jacket, Polo shirt and baseball cap.

The draw for these prizes will take place at the next club meeting following the rally, and winners will be contacted directly by the club."

ALMC Motor Club launched the 2011 Stages Rally at the City North Hotel, the rally which takes place on Sunday 17th July is based at the City North Hotel and is a counting round of the Richard Egger Insurance MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, the Loughran Signs Midlands East Rally Championship and the Millington Escort Challenge plus it will feature historic and junior classes.

Present at the launch were COC Noel Devlin, Event Secretary Deirdre Gallagher, leading entrant and ALMC member Robert Barrable along with his IRC points scoring Skoda Fabia S2000 rally car, Jonathan Pringle and his Ford Escort MkII, Stephen Cullen's Subaru Impreza N11 and Peter Barrable with his class winning Citreon C2R2. The launch was also attended by members of the hard working Stages organising committee, club members and many of the local radio stations and press.
"We can put together a really good event for competitors with challenging stages and a very compact route to save on road mileage, we have already received over 80 entries and have an impressive top ten including a number of overseas entries. We have extended our deadline for entries to Sunday 10th July to allow for crews to see how they get on in Sligo and we expect to start over 100 crews on Sunday the 17th" said Noel Devlin COC of the rally.

ALMC Stages Rally Only Weeks to Go!

The ALMC Motor Club are busy with preparations for the 2011 ALMC Stages Rally which takes place on Sunday 17th July. The event based at the City North Hotel is a counting round of the Richard Egger Insurance MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, the Loughran Signs Midlands East Rally Championship and the Millington Escort Challenge plus it will feature historic and junior classes.

The rally offers competitors a very compact event based just 35 minutes drive from Dublin with easy access via Dublin port and airport. The stages have moved further North for this year with service centralised near Slane in Co. Meath. The rally will feature nine stages located in counties Meath and Louth taking in a generous 185km of competitive stage kilometres. This year the competitive part of the rally will move to some new territory, to roads that have not seen rally cars (in full competition) for many years. Leading entries for the rally will include last year’s stages winner Damien Cole in his Ford Focus WRC who will take to stages fresh from his win on the fourth round of the UK Asphalt rally championship, the Midlands rally. Damien will be joined by championship compatriot Simon Mauger who finished third in last year’s event while providing spectators with an amazing display of rear wheel action while giving the WRC drivers a run for their money.

Local honours will be up held by Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman award winner and double Citroën Trophy Champion Robert Barrable in his S2000 Skoda Fabia. Robert will take to the Louth & Meath lanes fresh from his IRC debut the GEKO Ypres rally in Belgium. Robert’s father and twice winner of the ALMC stages rally Michael will also line out for the event, which car Michael will take charge of is subject to confirmation, rumours have it that it is likely to be a latest specification S2000 car.

Club member and leader of the Irish National championship Tim McNulty is also considering taking part while some of Tim’s rivals from the championship are also showing considerable interest in the event as they face into the second half of the 2011 championship. The rally once again this year is attracting a large number of competitors from the UK due to the events close proximity to Dublin and building on the popularity of the 2010 event as a counting round of the Richard Egger Insurance MSA Asphalt Rally Championship. The club in an effort to support competitors are offering those interested in doing the rally the opportunity to pay the events entry fee on a stage payments basis, details of which can be found on the dedicated stages website.

ALMC Stages Rally 2011 Entries Now Open

ALMC Motor Club has opened entries for the 2011 ALMC Stages Rally which takes place on Sunday 17th July. This year’s stages rally will return to its base at the City North Hotel and for the second year is a counting round of the REIS MSA Asphalt Rally Championship and the Loughran Signs Midlands East Rally Championship. The rally will feature nine stages located in County Meath and will see competitors move to stages located further North than with previous events. The stages take in a generous 150km of competitive stage kilometers and will be run on roads not used competitively for a number of years and while the stages are extremely challenging they are not as open as with previous years.
“We have received a lot of enquires already about this year’s event, we are expecting a large number of crews to travel from the UK as well as a strong local entry. The event received a great reaction from the UK crews last year and many who did not take part in 2010 are planning and looking forward to the trip across the Irish Sea for this year’s event” said Noel Devlin COC at the launch of the event regulations.

The stages rally will feature classes for Historic and Junior competitors with them competing on the first six stages of the rally. All classes in the event are likely to attract a large number of competitors from the UK due to the events close proximity to both Dublin airport, ferry port and the significantly reduced entry fee. The club are mindful of the difficult economic times and are therefore providing support for competitors by allowing them to pay the entry fee on a stage payments basis, details of which can be found on the dedicated stages website

ALMC Confirmed for MSA Asphalt Rally Championship 2011

The 2011 ALMC Stages Rally scheduled to take place on Sunday 17th July 2011 has been confirmed as a counting round of the 2011 MSA Asphalt Rally Championship. Following on from the success of ALMC’s inclusion in the 2010 championship calendar there was considerable support for the County Meath based event to return for a second consecutive year. The club under the direction of COC Noel Devlin, who will again lead the rally organising team for a third year has already commenced work on next year’s rally and he is looking to once again deliver an event that will be a highlight in the 2011 rally calendar.
“We have received a lot of enquires already about next year’s event, particularly from some of the UK competitors who are planning their championship campaigns for 2011 and are anxious to include the ALMC event in their plans. Once again I have the support of a very strong team within the club and we are looking at some new stages for next year and hopefully some new ideas to make the event more accessible and exciting for both competitors and spectators” said Noel Devlin COC.
