Test day kicks off Petro Systems National Forest Rally Championship

Posted: February 6, 2010 12:11 AM

The 2010 Petrosystems Irish Forestry Championship kicked off with an official test day last Saturday Jan 30th. The seven kilometre stage was located near Charleville Co.Cork, on smooth but demanding forestry roads in the Ballyhoura complex. The stage and service park was organised with the cooperation with MI, Coillte and the emergency services. The test day was run to launch the 2010 championship and give competitors a controlled environment to test their rally cars.

Star of the day was Craig Breen who gave the new Ford Fiesta S2000 its Irish debut on the event. Breen was using the event as a shakedown prior to the Galway rally. The 20 year old winner of the Billy Coleman will be competing in the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship and the British Rally Championship. Danny Barry is another Irish driver set to compete abroad this year, the Wicklow man is planning a campaign of IRC (Intercontinental Rally Championship) events starting with Ypres rally in Belgium. Other Mitsubishi drivers were Pat O’Connell and Sarah Moynihan. The Escort Mk2 brigade were represented by Seamus O’Connell, Adrian Hethrington and Matt Shinnors. Frank Byrnes and Barry Murphy were the forestry debutantes, driving a 206 and Nova respectively. A total of 27 crews availed of the early season opportunity to check out their cars, some of whom were able to make seven passes of the stage.Drivers and spectators contributed generously to the Haiti relief fund.

The championship proper gets off the line with the Tipperary M.C. Sean Conlon (Mitchelstown) rally on Sunday February 14th and comes to a conclusion on the final event at the Down Forestry rally on October 23rd.This is the first time the Forest championship has a presence north of the border and it gives the championship a better geographical spread. Other changes to the format include reduced entry fees –in cooperation with Coillte and Motorsport Ireland. The Forestry junior championship has proven very successful for the past few years and in 2010 the top two juniors will be eligible for the Billy Coleman award.
