Kenny English and Joe Bannerton from Galway were crowned the Peugeot Service Club Irish 205 Challenge champions for 2009 after a dramatic final round in Wexford last weekend.
The four drivers entered for the twelve stage event based in Wexford town all had a chance of winning the title but no one could have foreseen how the play would unfold.
Stage one saw Noel Smith lay down the marker, fastest by 6 seconds from Andrew Slattery and 14 faster than his main rival for the title Kenny English. Norman Dunne dropped almost a minute with brake problems. English who was running first on the road was rattled by Smiths first stage time and attacked stage two very hard. Smith too went all out but four miles in he couldn’t believe his eyes. English had gone off the road, wedging his car between two trees and inflicting sizeable damage to the car. Smith kept his head and went fastest by a huge margin of 35 seconds to arrive at the first service halt with a 41 second lead over Slattery with Dunne third. Smith had one hand on the trophy now but amazingly English made it back but with the loss of half an hour. If he could avoid exclusion then fourth would be enough to win if Smith lost the lead. Slattery and co driver Donal Lynch reduced Smiths advantage over the next two stages by 36 seconds to leave the gap at just 5 seconds with two stages of day one to go. Try as did Smith could do little to stop the flying Slattery who took another 22 seconds and went into the overnight halt with a 17 second lead. Dunne remained third with the crumpled English fourth.
Day two was going to be a cracker as English avoided exclusion and remained on the results sheet but with hefty time penalties. Now Smith knew he had to regain the lead and hold it to the end over last six stages. If Slattery repeated the form shown on day one it was going to be a tough task.
Slattery took 5 seconds on the first stage of the loop with Smith pulling 7 back on the next. At service both drivers spoke of how hard they were driving, this reflecting in the overall result where both were in the top thirty and totally dominating class ten. Just 1 second separated the two over stage nine in favour of Slattery. Smith knew he had the edge on his rival through the next stage and if he could take the same margin again he would halve the lead with just one repeat loop of stages to go. On full attack through stage ten it went horribly wrong for Smith and co driver Dara Lyttle when they clipped a bank at high speed, rolling the car three or four times and ending an enthralling battle. Slattery felt bad for his fellow competitor but still had to focus on finishing and hope English too would retire for him to snatch the championship. Over the final loop the order remained unchanged with Slattery taking his third win of the year which gave him second place in the championship. Dunne/ Niall Gavin came second after a quite performance but third place was enough for English to become champion for 2009.
Back at the finish English remarked “stuck between the trees yesterday I thought I had thrown it all away. Then to see Noel I could not believe it as I was sure he would win today”. A thrilling finish to another championship. English takes away 1500 euros prizemoney and the crown of 2009 Irish 205 Challenge champion. Slattery takes away 750 euros and Smith 500 euros courtesy of the championship sponsors.

31st Andrew Slattery/ Donal Lynch 2.23.52

Donegal driver Adrian McElhinney has become the 2009 Citroen Racing Trophy Ireland winner, securing the title with a victory on the final round of the series, the second day of the Wexford Stages Rally. With co-driver Shane Buckley who took the co-driver’s title also, they brought their Citroen C2 R2 to the Wexford finish, to secure their awesome prizes, a new C2 R2 Max upgrade kit, from Citroen Sport, prize money and six free BF Goodrich rally tyres. “We decided this morning, the best way to make totally sure of the title was to go for it today, and we had a trouble free day, unlike yesterday. To win the series is just brilliant, and next year will be another step up for us driving the Max specification car. The team has worked hard all year, and our car has been the only one to finish all of the rounds, someway or other! Shane has also done a great job on the pace-notes. Honestly with me being from Donegal and Shane from Co. Kerry, I don’t what he is saying half the time, but once he starts reading the pace-notes it’s perfect!” Adrian’s main title rival Barry Evans took second place on both rounds, but that was by far the whole story of rounds six and seven of the Citroen Racing Trophy Ireland.
Round six, day one of the Wexford Stages Rally, and the big surprise was Tipperary’s Paul Manton, who stormed into the lead, with some very fast stage times. In the championship race, Barry Evans needed victory, and perhaps a little misfortune to strike championship leader McElhinney, and it actually had struck! “We were queuing up for the start line of the first stage, and I noticed the battery voltage reading very low” said Adrian. “It was getting very worrying, the screen went off on the dash-board, and we lost the power steering, as the battery started to drain. We lost minutes as Barry and Mark Kane both passed us on the stage. At the end of the first stage we disconnected everything we didn’t need and got to service and changed the alternator. It was just one of those days for us, on the second last stage on a tight right hander with a slight cut the car bottomed and the exhaust pulled off the front pipe, so there was a horrendous noise, then on the final stage the clutch cable snapped!” His eventual fourth place finish on round six was somewhat of a miracle and assured him of the title, barring any queries or anything over anyone’s times. Not so lucky were Martin Tynan, who once again retired with a broken drive-shaft, and John Quill who broke his engine mountings, both retiring on day one.
Mark Kane made a slow start by his own admission, and would eventually claim third on the opening day, although his car wasn’t picking up correctly. Second was Barry Evans, who made a real bid to keep his championship hopes alive. The Monaghan driver had a gearbox problem to report on the opening loop, and his service crew led by racing ace Jonny Fildes did a sterling job to put in a new gearbox in the time allowed. Barry was within 20 seconds of the leader with two tests to go, and decided to take a gamble on a harder compound of tyre, to really push for victory. It was a gamble that was worth the risk, but an over–shoot and stall ensured that he was sixteen seconds off the winning spot at the end of the day. Indeed it was Paul Manton who scored a well deserved victory at the end of the day in a faultless drive.
Day two, round seven, and once again the fast Wexford Stages were being enjoyed immensely by the C2 R2 crews. Once again it was Paul Manton on a charge, as he simply annihilated the opposition with a time 24 seconds faster than his nearest C2 R2 rival on the first test. But things took a turn for the worse on the second test, as Paul explains. “There was a 30 minute delay before the stage start, and I knew that the tyres would be cold. But I was just trying maybe a bit too hard, and just made a mistake on the fourth or fifth corner of the stage. We went up two banks and that was it, all over. I went from hero to zero in about 5 seconds!” With Paul out, Adrian McElhinney in contrast to day one had a trouble free day to take victory despite catching a few cars on stages, and on this rally he was also driving on his own pace-notes for the first time, in preparation for his trip to the Rally Antibes in France.
For Barry Evans again it was a hard fought second place, and second for the second year running in the championship, whilst Mark Kane’s C2 R2 went better on the final loop after a change of fuel pump, throttle hesitation problems having held him back, but third place also gave him third place in the Citroen Racing Trophy Ireland standings.
Exciting plans for next year’s Citroen Racing Trophy Ireland are already underway, and thanks to support from Total and Citroen Sport the competitors have once again enjoyed one of the best prize funds in Irish motorsport, and Adrian McElhinney from Donegal town the big prize winner. Adrian has also been selected by Citroen Sport to bring his newly built Citroen C2 R2 Max to the Rally Antibes, in the South of France on the 16th-18th October, for an end of season bonanza, where he is entitled to generous rewards from Citroen Sport. “The team have worked so hard between events to prepare the car correctly, and really it will be great to bring the service crew out somewhere different as well, hopefully with a bit of sunshine too, after all the effort they have put in this year.”

Next weekend’s Riverbank House Hotel Dick Bailey Stages, better known as the Wexford Rally, will see a five-way battle for honours between the leading Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge Ireland crews, all of whom have a real chance of lifting the 2009 title.
With entry numbers building since the opening round and the series providing four different winners so far, this year’s Irish Evo Challenge has seen the leading teams locked in combat throughout the season.
The Wexford-based event is the third of the year’s double headers, which means there is a possible 24 points (12 for each day) on offer for the winner. However, each crew must drop three scores, a factor which shakes up the permutations even more.
Currently topping the Irish Evolution Challenge driver’s tables is William Mavitty on 42 points. However, he still has to drop one round and seven points, but has the potential of finishing with a total score of 59.
Next highest placed driver is Stanley Ballantine on 40 points. He is another to have to drop a score - in this case six points - and therefore could end his season on 58.
Liam Egan led the series early in the season following a string of consistent results but his excellent finishing record means that, whatever the outcome this weekend, he will have to drop a minimum of eight points, which sees him with a maximum potential score of 55 points.
Having missed the previous round in Ulster due to a family vacation, Neil McCance will be back to finish his season as he started, with a win on both days. Having 34 points on the board and already zero-scoring on four rounds, McCance does not need to drop any points and therefore, with an achievable target of 58, is in prime position to snatch the title.
However, if recent form is anything to go by, McCance’s biggest challenge will come from Alan Carmichael, who’s victory in both the Irish and UK Evo Challenges last time out in Ulster has not only boosted his confidence, but proved that he has the pace to win as well. Currently on 32 points and, with no dropped scores to take into account, a double-first this weekend would see him achieve an end-of season tally of 56.
Although not in with a shot at the big prize, local driver Tom White is hoping to put his season’s bad luck behind him and pull a top result out of the bag on his home soil and, in doing so, bring his first season in the Evo Challenge to a deserving conclusion.
Notable absentees from this event are three others who, albeit with an outside chance, could have mathematically claimed the title: John McGlaughlin, who has won one two occasions and will be on his honeymoon next weekend. Winner of the first two rounds Keith Cronin will be rebuilding his car following Ulster and setting his sights on the final round of the British Rally Championship at the end of the month. And finally, Geoff McMahon, who’s work commitments have meant that a full assault on the series has not been possible.
Organisers of the Evolution Challenge are therefore delighted that eight drivers and as many co-drivers could have potentially claimed the top prize this season.
The Riverbank House Hotel Dick Bailey Stages features a straight-forward format, with two stages ran three times on Saturday and another two stages ran three times on Sunday. The rally schedule allows for a service interval after every two, the total competitive distance of the weekend’s 12 stages measuring 237 kilometres.
The Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge Ireland is supported by: Pirelli tyres, Sunoco Racing Fuels, James Foley Rallysport, Carbone Lorraine, Murray Motorsport, Speedline Corse wheels, PIAA lights, Pacenotes, Sparco racewear and Mitsubishi Motors Ireland.

Despite the economic doom and gloom that has swept the country over the last 18 months or so, there is certainly an air of enthusiasm and intrigue for this, the 37th running of Wexford Motor Club’s flagship event, the Riverbank House Hotel Dick Bailey Stages Rally. After seeing the event dominated by Eamon Boland and Stephen Murphy for over a decade, 2008 say new and surely the most popular names on the cup in P.J. McGrath and Billy Collins and now in 2009, the event promises to be one of the most open in years. Here a run down on the runners and riders in this year’s event.
First on the road for the 2009 Riverbank House Hotel Dick Bailey Stages Rally are the 2008 winners, P.J. McGrath and proud Waterford man Billy Collins aboard their usual Tom Gahan run Subaru Impreza S9. P.J. rocked Irish WRC ace Gareth MacHale on last years event, leading from the outset and opening up a lead over the Dubliner until Gareth put his Focus off the road trying to chase down the New Ross man. P.J. was one of the most popular winners ever of the event and the local man with Billy shouting out the notes will have the local support right behind him this year once again.
At 2 is Waterford crew Andrew Purcell and Mark Wylie in an identical Subaru S9 to that of P.J. McGrath and Billy Collins, the car that Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle took to victory at this years Barbados rally carnival. Andrew is both a successful driver and navigator, having led Ray Breen to the 2005 National Tarmac Championship and then challenged for the National Forestry Championship for much of the 2008 season himself in an outdated P2000 Impreza. This will be a one off event for the crew aboard the S9, so you can be sure it will be all systems from the off for the Waterford men.
At 3 is the newly acquired “05” specification Ford Focus WRC is “Get Connected!” front man Damien Cole with Craig Drew on the notes. Damien has been a regular visitor to Wexford over the years, from Darrian’s to Subaru’s he has always been out to enjoy his sport and has had plenty of success over the years. Damien had his debut in the Focus on the recent Mewla rally where he finished in a fine second overall. Damien has been a great supporter of motorsport in Ireland, and of course set up the “Get Connected” championship, a fabulous concept that had great competitor support and backing and which Wexford was a round of. It only ceased to exist when it was pointed out that the championship didn’t meet certain criteria. Some decisions do make you scratch you head!
Running with number 4 on the door is Dubliner Michael Barrable with Killarney’s Diarmud Falvey on the notes. Michael has twice been runner up on the event and would dearly love to win the event that he has come so close to in the past. He already has wins in Carlow and on the ALMC to his name this year, the only occasions where he has wheeled out his 05 Focus. He is sure to be a threat for overall honours in his bid to make it a hat trick of wins in 2009.
Starting at 5 and the first of the 2-wheel drive cars is local crew James Stafford and Amy Ryan aboard their Millington powered Darrian T90 GTR. James has had some fine results aboard this machine, including top honours on the 2007 Killarney National Rally. This years outings have been limited but he still managed to wheel the fibreglass rocket out to take his third overall victory on this years Wexford mini-stages rally. Stafford will be the man to beat in the 2-wheel drive race, but you can be sure both him and Amy will be keeping one eye on the top of the leader board as the event develops.
Last years top 2-wheel drive crew Wesley Patterson and Marty McGarrity start the event at number 6. Wesley and Marty have been the men to beat on the modified scene this year, with victories in the National rally section on the Galway International, Circuit of Ireland, Killarney Lakes and Donegal international rallies. The pair have had some electrifying battles this year with the likes of Martin McGee, Manus Kelly, Adrian Hetherington, Rodney Wilton, Gary McPhillips and many others and they have still to be knocked off the top step of the podium this season. The Lisburn man is truly the king of the Escorts on tarmac at the moment and it’s a tribute to the organisers of the rally that Wesley and Marty are making the long trip back down for this year’s event. Last year on the event Wesley and Marty had a great tussle with Neil Williams and they are sure to renew that rivalry this weekend along with the gaggle of top modified cars that clutter the entry list.
Regular visitors to Wexford Welsh pair Neil Williams and Eurig Davies start this year’s event at number 7. Neil has had many good results over the last few years, notably sixth overall in 2006 when they had a mighty battle all event long to finish up just behind the two-wheel drive winners, Willy and Johnny Whitty. Neil has been absent from the stages for much of 2009 but himself and Eurig return to Wexford intent on making up for lost ground. Last years saw the welsh men have a great dice with Wesley Patterson and Marty McGarrity before mechanical problems intervened. Hopefully this year there will be no such problems and they can pick up the battle once again.
The second of our Darrian’s start at 8, with Washington James and Dai Roberts taming the 2.5 Millington engined welsh pocket rocket on the stages. Washington is another regular visitor to Wexford and although he hasn’t been over to many events in Ireland this year, the fast open Wexford stages will suit the Welsh crewed Darrian and Washington is bound to be in the top of the modified battle. Dai Roberts will be shouting out the notes this weekend and will be in for a spectacular spin as they challenge Stafford for top dog in the battle of the Darrian’s.
At 9 is a man who until a few months ago wasn’t that well known in the south-east of the country but Simon Mauger put him name on the map by snatching the Escort challenge crown in May of this year from Seamus O’ Connell on the last stage of this years event. Now equipped with a newly built 2.3 engined Escort, the Thane motor club man with Carlow’s Ken Blanche on the notes will take on Carlow foe Trevor Mulligan along with many other rapid Escort crews. This will be Simon’s first visit to Wexford but as he proved in Carlow, he’s a quick learner. He’ll have to be however as the modified line-up doesn’t get any tougher than what’s on show this weekend.
Rounding out the top ten is the bright orange Escort of Trevor Mulligan with Cork’s Sean Hayde calling the notes. Trevor was a regular on the National scene in 2008 but has appeared only sporadically in 2009, mainly due to a heavy shunt on the Escort challenge in Carlow this year although he did take the 2-wheel drive honours on the ALMC stages rally. With an outing on the Castle Mini Stages the weekend before on the cards, Trevor and Sean are likely to be on the pace of the top modifieds from the word go and they can be expected to be right in the mix of the modified battle.
So there you have it, top ten entries for the 2009 Dick Bailey stages rally. But it doesn’t end there; contenders outside the top ten include David James, back in his familiar BDG Escort, John Somers who is getting to grips with his Celica GT4 and Eoin Doyle in his P2000 Impreza, who can all expect to get in on the act. The group N battle has great potential with the Evo challenge crews such as Neil McCance, Alan Carmichael, Stanley Ballentine and Willy Mavitty along with the Subaru pair of Sean Flanagan and Mark Nangle all in for the battle. There is also a great battle in store for front wheel drive honours with the Honda cup contenders Tomas O’ Rourke, Damien McCarthy and Jason Ryan ready to do battle with the very rapid Astra of Simon Kehoe and the pocket rocket Nova’s of Mark Kennedy and the Boggan brothers. One thing you can be sure of, it’s going to be an entertaining weekend.
The junior rally runs all day Sunday and Mark Furlong’s Escort G4 leads the field away with the civics’ of Bill Carroll and Breda Doyle and Damien and Stuart Roche sandwiching the Corsa B of Michael Brady on the entry front runners.
The rally consists of two twelve mile stages repeated three times with the same format being used for both days. Centralised servicing for the whole weekend will be at Wexford racecourse making this year’s event one of the most competitor friendly of the year.

For the fourth year running the Wexford Stages Rally will be the championship round that will decide who will be crowned the Peugeot Service Club Irish 205 Challenge champion of 2009. Just the three drivers still in with a chance of lifting the title will start the September 12th and 13th event based in Wexford town.
The fast flowing roads of the south east are a favourite with the drivers where they can enjoy the superb handling of the Peugeot 205 gti and score a high overall result against more powerful cars.
Championship leader heading to Wexford is Kenny English from Galway who will be co driven by Joe Bannerton who has guided this team all year including the back to back wins on rounds two and three. Second in the championship just four points behind is Noel Smith from Cavan who will have Dara Lyttle calling the pacenotes. Victory on the last rally will have been a huge boost to them as they start this event for the first time. Third placed Norman Dunne has chosen not to compete here feeling his run of bad luck this year wont change. The final driver still with a chance of winning is Tipperarys Andrew Slattery who will be accompanied by Donal Lynch. Two wins, a third place and two retirements have demoted this crew to fourth with an outside chance of the title.
We spoke to all the drivers to find out what they need to do to win the title;
Kenny English: ‘if Noel and I are fighting for the win then its winner takes all because there is 20 points for the win and 15 for second but there is just 4 points between us so I have to beat him. If Andy wins then third place is enough to take the title but I must finish at all costs. I am confidant going down there as I set some fastest times last year so I am just doing the normal things I do before any rally’.
Noel Smith; ‘my job is fairly simple, I have to win as nothing else is good enough if Kenny stays going. If he retires I just need to finish to win the championship. I feel his reliability has to let him down sometime and this rally is over two days so that helps the mind a bit. Andy is the biggest threat because he is pretty quick out of the box so I have to match him. I am doing a rally the Sunday before in a hired car to be match fit and have sent my own car to Martisport for a full checkover’.
Andrew Slattery: ‘my chances are slim but you never can tell in rallying. Just look at my drop down the championship table after the last rally which still annoys me. I can either sit back and save my car and hope the other two trip over each other or go flat out and make them chase me. I know I have the speed to open up a lead and make them drive maybe harder than they want so I will go this way I think. Its risky as I could brake the car or put it off but if I have a lead with few stages to go I will back off to make the other two fight it out to the finish. I need both lads to retire to win but can get second in the championship on the tie break rule if I finish second to Noel and Kenny doesn’t finish’.
The rally starts from the Riverbank Hotel on Saturday morning with six long stages in the surrounding area. Service will take place at the Racecourse after each loop of two stages. The same format is repeated on Sunday before the finish ceremony back at the Riverbank where one of the drivers will be crowned the Peugeot Service Club Irish 205 Challenge champion of 2009.
