Thornton Roofing Lough Neagh Stages Rally
Round 3 - 2009 Northern Ireland 2WD Rally Challenge
Posted: July 8, 2009 5:21 PM
Crews gathered on Sunday 5th for the third round of the Pacenotes ANICC 2WD Rally Challenge held at Moneyglass Demesne, sponsored by Thornton Roofing. After eight special tests organised by the Lough Neagh Tarmac and Marshals Motor Club, George Robinson emerged victorious. Despite setting the pace on the opening test, Kieron Graffin had to settle for second.
In the Pacenotes ANICC 2WD Rally Challenge there was a close battle between Drew Stewart and Gary Price, with less than two seconds separating them at the end of the day. Drew was rewarded with maximum points after his victory and with two wins out of three; he leads the Pacenotes series ahead of Gary Price.
Before round three Andrew Bushe was leading the Challenge but unfortunately he was unable to compete on Sunday. Andrew reported,
“Sadly I had to pull out before Sunday’s event, due to an engine problem in the Saxo. The engine was incorrectly rebuilt in England.”
He continued,
“The engine was not running correctly in Ballypatrick, and we found major issues to be sorted, sadly they could not be sorted in time for Lough Neagh.”
Andrew should be in action again at Bishopscourt on the 14th July.
Michael Conlon was the next of the Challenge finishers, despite a close call on stage seven, when a competing car in front spun. Taking to the grass, Michael didn’t loose much time finishing third in the Challenge and seventeenth overall.
Eamon McLaughlin claimed his third maximum points on Sunday, despite finishing third in the up to 1400cc class as Nigel Mills and Raymond Dennison are not registered.
In the class for cars up to 1650cc 8 valve, Billy Regan navigated Simon Gordon to the class win by five seconds over Brian Quigley, with Mark Robison’s Nova a further four seconds back.
Stephen Baxter was quickest in the class for cars up to 1650cc 16 valves by four seconds over Richard Mulholland. Raymond Doyle finished third and was the first of the Challenge contenders. Meanwhile Alan Atchenson kept Mark McGrath at bay for maximum 2000cc points. A full report and photos will be featured in the next issue of the Pacenotes Rally Magazine.

The weather held up well for most of Sunday’s Thornton Roofing lough neagh stages rally with only one heavy shower around mid-day. The times were tight in all the classes but especially at the top with times within points of seconds. Kieran Graffin was just pipped on the post by George Robinson for victory. Graffin was driving what was basically a GpN Lancer with a big restrictor and pulled out a lead in the rain, but was then under pressure on the drying roads through the afternoon. "It was a good tight race" reported Graffin afterwards, "the last stage was all or nothing and I slid on at the last corner and had to reverse. A bit wetter and slippier would have suited me better."
Overall winners-
1st George Robinson
2nd Kieron Graffin
3rd Enda Mc Nulty
Group N winner Brian Muldoon
Drew Stewart was 1st 2 wheel drive home- helped by his seeding he missed the worst of the torrential rain that fell in the middle of the day
Paddy Donnelly won spirit of the rally finishing with 3 wheels after the front left stub axle broke on his car hurtling him into a bale near the finish of the stage, he had been leading his class going into that final stage, a deserving winner of this prize
Joe Pat O’Kane won the entertainer award- in his yellow sunbeam

With just over a week until the Thornton roofing lough neagh stages multi-use rally to be held at Moneyglass demesne, Toomebridge on Sunday the 5th of July things are really starting to rev up.
The entry list is almost full with some of the best range of cars and crews to be seen at a rally this year, one of them is Gary McEvoy from the leading rally merchandise business ‘Autofashion’ with his navigator for the day Gary Jennings who is more likely to be seen driving in the Irish tarmac championship.
Gary McEvoy tells us that Jennings is sitting in to get tips from the master- were pretty sure Jennings will have a different view on that.
To add to this family friendly event we have now brought Cromore castles to the event with mini Quads and track (In keeping with the Motorsport),
Bouncy Castle, inflatable Slide, Laser Maze and Paintball Trailer- this should keep the kids and some big kids entertained.
With Derek McGeehan the winner for the past few years unable to attend due to his invitation to the Goodwood festival of speed by Toyota Europe this leaves the door wide open for overall honours
Seeding to completed this weekend.

Garry Jennings has agreed to co-pilot for Gary McEvoy on this year's Lough Neagh Stages.
Gary will wheel out in his Ex-Ralliart Evo 4 which he used to finished 5th overall last year.

The event kicks off with scrutineering in the service paddock, Higgins estate, Moneyglass demesne on Saturday 5th July from 6pm to 9pm. competing vehicles will be examined while crews will have the opportunity to reece the stages for the next day.
Sunday morning all competitors will gather for drivers briefing at 9am in the service paddock to check tyre pressures and more importantly blood pressures for the day ahead, to counteract the blood pressure aspect a hearty breakfast is available from 8am onwards from outside caterers. The first rally car will be off the line at 10am.
A road safety demonstration is planned for the mid-day service halt with the fire and police services taking part in a realistic road traffic incident.
The Moneyglass demesne is just one mile from the roguery roundabout on the main B18 Toomebridge / Ballymena road. Spectator car parking is conveniently in the estate, and will be sign posted off the main roads.
Sunday evening will see the competitors at the O’Neill Arms Hotel, Toome for the rally finish and awards presentation, everyone is welcome back with carvery meals available up to 7.30pm. (Live band will be playing from 9pm)
