Jonathan Cunningham Circuit of Munster 2009 Junior Rally winner, Class G winner in the NJRC and new overall leader in the Junior Championship. What a difference a week makes. Seven days ago Jonathan came away from the Cavan Stages Rally with a feeling of what could have been! After suffering two punctures on the first stage he was left to just fight for a class position. Having shown some real talent by setting four fastest stages times over the remaining stages in Cavan Jonathan carried that form to this weekend’s event in the Limerick and the difference was also clear to be seen in the NJRC with only two registered drivers out in Cavan but in the Adare based event this weekend we had four registered drivers with three defending points on the board, two drivers were also welcomed in to the championship and five other drivers taking regs with a view the signing up.
The Claregalway man Jonathan Cunningham started out favourite, John Byrnes was next in the seedings, with fellow Limerick man John O’Connor coming in at number three. Chris Malloy entered in the Peugeot 206 and standing on eight points in the championship had to pull his entry on Saturday night with engine problems with the 206. Lining out the first time in the championship we had Kevin O’Connor (Younger brother Of John) driving a RWD Peugeot 205 and from Co. Kerry Brendan O’Mahoney. As a junior rally the class 16 competitors joined the action on the fifth stage and got five special stages, which were based just south of New Castle West. Jonathan running first on the road with J16 was on the pace from the off, setting a time of 11.24 on the first stage. This did not come with out problems, as through the stage he found selecting gears very hard and checking the car after coming off the stage he saw gear oil draining from the side of the gearbox and covering the sump and bottom of the engine. On stage six Jonathan nursed the car through the first two Kms but found the gears loosen out as the stage went on and set fastest time of 10 min 16 sec. Next on the time sheets for our registered drivers were our two new entrants to the championship, Kevin O’Connor with a time of 23.42 over the opening two stages, with Kerry man Brendan O’Mahoney just five second behind. Kevin and Brendan were lying fifth and sixth respectively on the leader board. John Byrnes out for the first time in the MDR Motorsport Citroen C2R2 was complaining of brake problems over the first loop and was in ninth place. John O’Connor was having one of those days as he was off the road on both stage five with an over shoot and six when he ended up in a drain loosing a lot of time and by now was bring up the rear of the field.
The next loop started with stage seven and again Cunningham punched in a fastest stage time Kevin O’Connor was up to Third overall and John Byrnes up to seventh but still didn’t have full confidence in his brakes and felt the bias wasn’t set properly. On the penultimate stage Jonathan Cunningham started to feel his tyres go off a little so decided to just consolidate his lead and bring the car home safe. John Byrne was elevated to five with a good time. Over the last stage Cunningham rounded off the fine drive completing his string of fastest stage times and his rightful place at the top of the leader board with eight points and a total of twenty-two. Kevin O’Connor finished the last stage with a time 10.55 and took third overall and got his championship bid under way with six points. John Byrnes suffering from those brake problems all day was pleased with his fourth and picked up six points. Brendan O’Mahoney was another to gain six points on his opening round and was very happy with a car that’s a lot more underpowered than the machinery around it. John O’Connor suffered gearbox problems on the second loop and lost fifth gear but still got home and picked up six points.
During just a week there has been quite a change to the championship leader board. Jonathan Cunningham has taken over as leader in championship on 22 points. Craig Breen now holds second place on 20 points but is still to take part on a tarmac rally. Vincent McAree and John Byrnes are now in equal third on 14 points. Kevin Gallagher and Chris Malloy have 8 points and share fourth. Getting their first championship points this weekend were Limerick brothers John and Kevin O’Connor and Co Kerry’s Brendan O’Mahoney. Unfortunately round six of the championship was to be based in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath for the Northeast Restricted Mini Stages but the event had to be cancelled, so our next outing marks the halfway point in the season with the Ravens Rock Junior Rally on the 28th of June.

FORMER Dunlop National Rally champion, Niall Maguire (Subaru WRC) took
an important victory on the Woodland's House Hotel Circuit of Munster
Dunlop National Rally Championship, the fourth round of the national
series. He won the nine-stage event by a one minute and ten second
margin - finishing ahead of Kevin Barrett. Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi)
was a further three minutes and 37 seconds behind in third.
Maguire battled hard with pre-event series leader, Patrick Elliott
throughout most of the day and had reduced Elliott's one time
advantage of twelve seconds to five seconds entering the final stage.
Elliott crashed out leaving Maguire take his first victory of the
season and move into the lead of the Dunlop series - 14 points ahead
Elliott.
Just a single second separated Elliott and Maguire following the
completion of the opening stage, Sugar Hill. Both drivers indicated a
slight unease - Elliott stalled at a hairpin and lost a few seconds
while Maguire reckoned the brakes of his Subaru were fading towards
the stage end. Meanwhile, Kevin Barrett was just four seconds behind
Maguire with top Group N driver, Kevin Kelleher setting a time of
seven minutes even, to slot into fourth overall - 17 seconds off top
spot. Sean Gallagher (Subaru WRC), out for the first time in a round
of the Dunlop series in some twelve months, was fifth.
They were the only cars from the top ten to complete the test as
Anthony O'Halloran crashed his Mitsubishi, neither himself or
co-driver, Charlie McEnery were hurt. Unfortunately, although damage
to the car was minimal, they couldn't re-start their Mitsubishi.
Out on the second test, Elliott took ten seconds out of Maguire, who
was subsequently quickest through S.S. 3 to leave ten seconds between
them at the first service halt. Elliott reported another stall, this
time on stage three while Maguire had a similar experience on the
second stage. Barrett remained in third and while Gallagher finished
the stage in fourth place, he failed to make it to the service halt
when the engine expired.
Garry Jennings took up the role of Group N leader but reckoned his
Mitsubishi lacked power on the uphill sections of the stages.
Meanwhile, his nemesis, Kevin Kelleher was six seconds behind in sixth
with some slight brake problems.
Mike Quinn (Escort) in seventh spot was the top two-wheel drive
contender, he too suffered some brake maladies. Eamonn Daly in a
Mitsubishi, was eighth in a top ten that also included Trevor Bustard
(Mitsubishi) and late entry, Michael Curran (Ford Escort).
Gary Reidy crashed on the third stage, the incident also led to the
retirement of Barry Meade, who had to ditch his Escort to avoid
Reidy's stricken car.
Despite a lurid overshoot, Maguire trimmed Elliott's lead to six
seconds on the fourth stage where Barrett was quickest of all.
Elliott gained a similar margin back on stage five as Maguire posted a
very strong time on the sixth test to leave him trailing Elliott by
eleven seconds at the final service halt. Elliott remarked that he
wasn't using the launch control as it led to the car stalling.
Maguire also stalled on the fifth stage.
Group N leader, Kelleher stated that his Mitsubishi was much improved
following the insertion of new brakes. Jennings lost time on the
fifth stage when mud filled the hub of his Mitsubishi, he also lost
the lead in Group N with Kelleher moving eleven seconds in front of
the Fermanagh ace. Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi)_ damaged the clutch on
the fifth stage, however, he was third in the showroom category.
Seventh placed, Trevor Bustard (Mitsubishi) had no explanation for his
time on Stage 6 as he reckoned he should have reaped greater rewards
for his efforts.
The top ten also included Eddie Power (Toyota Corolla WRC), Michael
Curran (Ford escort) and Patterson's RallyNews Award pre-event leader,
Thomas Fitzmaurice, who lost time with driveshaft problems.
Elsewhere, Sean Flanagan, in the hired Mitsubishi, retired when he
beached the car on the sixth stage.
Maguire reduced the deficit to six seconds after a fine performance
through the seventh test. He took a second out of his rival on the
penultimate test to leave him five behind the Dunlop Championship
leader entering the final test. Barrett set the pace on the
penultimate test. Meanwhile, Kevin Kelleher retired after he
completed the seventh stage - he couldn't select any gears in his
Mitsubishi. Jennings was also in trouble with gear linkage and he lost
over two minutes.
Local stalwart, Eamonn Daly was perfectly poised to take advantage and
he went on to claim third overall. Oldcastle's, Michael Curran came
through transmission trouble to win the modified category, he was
fourth overall. Jennings was fifth was followed by Eddie Power in the
ex-John McCarthy Toyota Corolla WRC.
Thomas Fitzmaurice in seventh maintained his lead in the Patterson's
RallyNews Group N award in a top ten completed by Paul Elliot
(Mitsubishi), ed Synan (Escort) and Paul McEnroe (Subaru).

Sunday's Circuit of Munster marks a crucial point in the current
Dunlop National Rally Championship with series leader, Patrick Elliott
(Subaru WRC) looking to maintain his unbeaten sequence in the ten
round series.
With victories in Nenagh, Castlebar and Tralee, the Cavan ace travels
to the Adare based fourth round Circuit of Munster to defend his great
run against arch-rival, Niall Maguire, also in a Subaru WRC.
Elliott won the corresponding event last year and will have nothing to
fear as he tries to further dilute Maguire's title challenge.
However, with victories in the non-championship events in Monaghan and
Cavan, Maguire will be in confident mood. The former triple Dunlop
champion knows that he must prevent Elliott from taking the maximum
twenty points on offer to have a realistic chance of a record breaking
fourth title. He was most unlucky on the last championship outing in
Tralee where Elliott snatched a last stage victory to win by a six
second margin. Not surprisingly, Maguire was shattered at the manner
of that defeat and at the time, even contemplated ending his
championship bid. Now, refreshed with his double in Monaghan and
Cavan, the latter on Sunday last, he should be in ebullient form.
Third seed, Kevin Barrett (Subaru WRC) showed good early form in Kerry
but retired on the third stage due to a sheared wheel, he gave a
tremendous performance in last week's Cavan Rally and pushed Maguire
all the way to the final test.
Carrick-on-Shannon's Sean Gallagher, a former Dunlop regular, is
seeded at number four in his Subaru WRC.
Meanwhile, in the race for the Patterson's RallyNews Group N award,
Clonakilty driver, Kevin Kelleher (Mitsubishi) resumes his bid to land
an inaugural national title. Kelleher took maximum points in Kerry
but faces strong opposition in the nine stage Adare based rally.
Clare's, Anthony O'Halloran, Limerick's, Eamonn Daly, Kerry's, Thomas
Fitzmaurice, Fermanagh's, Garry Jennings, Donegal's, Trevor Bustard,
all in Mitsubishi's and Meath's, Sean Flanagan will also drive a Mitsubishi in Limerick , will all be
aiming to maximise their efforts.
Fitzmaurice is the current leader - seven points ahead of Kelleher
with Jennings just a point further behind. Daly will be aiming to fly
the local flag.
Top two-wheel drive exponent, Mike Quinn (Ford Escort), heads the
standings for the inaugural Rally.ie award. The modified category
features local aces, Ed Synan, Paul Purtill, Gary Reidy and Ed
O'Callaghan all in Mk.2 Ford Escorts. Cork driver, Barry Meade
(Escort) returns to competitive action after his suspension following
an incident in the Cork Mini Stage Rally last year.
The capacity entry also includes Tim Enright (Mitsubishi), Escort
trio, Aidan Walsh, Frank Sweeney and Mick McQuaid, local driver, Peter
Cummins (Darrian T90), Paul Elliott (Mitsubishi) and Andrew Bush
(Citroen Saxo).
Former Dunlop regular, Tadhg Linehan returns in a Subaru N12B and
Irish Forest Championship regular, James Murphy from Limerick, will
make the switch to tarmac in his Escort Cosworth WRC.

After kick starting the first tarmac (Round 4) event of the season last weekend in Cavan, we now head to Limerick for round five at the Circuit of Munster only seven days later. Vincent McAree and Jonathan Cunningham were the only registered competitors out in Cavan but this weekend looks a lot more interesting as the Adare based event has four drivers in the mix and with the event also running a Junior Rally meaning all the drivers will be in the same class should make for a hot pace.
Seeded at J1 is John Byrnes, after a good result last time out in the Midlands Stages where he finished second in class 6 to Chris Meeke will be in a C2R2 which he has acquired in a bid to step up his effort to win the championship. John was divided between using his Honda Civic but feels the Citroen gives him the best way forward.
We have another Limerick man at J3, driving the G3 Escort is John O�Connor. John�s last event was in Carlow just a few weeks ago where he took class 24 honours. John reports the win in Carlow was a good result and sets him up for his home event. John had a test session in the car last weekend, which went well and now looks forward to the stages around Newcastle West.
Next up we have Jonathan Cunningham. Jonathan was the hard luck story last weekend in Cavan. Two punctures on the opening stage left him seven minutes behind the class leader but this just spurred on Jonathan. Over the eight remaining stages he set four fastest times in the class and climbed from twenty-sixth after that first stage to finish twelfth at the finish. Jonathan was on a flight back the UK on Monday as he works as a fabrication technician at M Sport. He will return home on Friday and hopes to get some testing in before next weekend.
From Clonmel we have Chris Malloy in the Peugeot 206. This will be the first event for Chris since early March where he took fourth in class 6 in the Kerry Stages but now is looking forward to this weekend�s event and from there the Ravens Rock Rally in June.
Apart from the registered drivers competing, championship registrar John Quill is expecting new drivers to sign up for the Championship over the weekend.

Sunday May 31st 2009 sees Limerick Motor Club run their annual Circuit of Munster Rally. The familiar friendly surroundings of The Woodlands House Hotel, Adare will again be HQ and main sponsor of the rally. We are again thankful to Ian Roche of Roche Group / Excel Rallying who remain as an associate sponsor for 2009.
For 2009 we are delighted to announce the support of NewcastleWest Autos- Fiat as an associate sponsor for the Rally. This has been made possible by Ken Heaphy and his team at NewcastleWest Autos situated at Gortboy, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick.
This year the rally is Round 4 of the Dunlop National Rally Championship and Round 3 of the Top Part West Coast Championship.
Ger Healy will again be the COC and both he and his team have put together a challenging and compact route. This year the stages are located in West limerick taking in roads around NewcastleWest, Tournafulla and Mountcollins.
Centralised service will be in the Castlemahon area. The route should be most enjoyable for both competitors and spectators.
The event kicks off from The Woodlands at 8.30am on May 31st and returns at approx 5pm.
