The Carlow Stages Rally on May 10th is round 4 of Honda Cup Ireland 2009. The Leighlin Bridge, Co. Carlow based event represents the mid-point of the 2009 Honda Cup Season and a very impressive battle is waging at the top of the field between Damien McCarthy (seeded 10th) and Tomás O’Rourke (seeded 8th). The two top competitors have pushed each other hard on all the previous three rounds of the cup, and on the last round at the Midlands Stages Rally, the high standard was proven with both competitors finishing in the top ten places overall, with McCarthy the eventual victor – only to be beaten by 300 bhp+ modified machinery and Group N four wheel drives. However, the two leading competitors may have to focus beyond themselves in Carlow with the return of Martin Cunningham (seeded 9th) to the fold. Martin suffered a minor mechanical gremlin on his way to the start ramp on the Midlands Rally which sidelined him for the event – we are looking forward to having the Super-Production front runner back for round 4 in Carlow. We are hoping to welcome the return of Jason Ryan and Gavin Walsh to the Super-Production class also. The pace is fierce and the battles tough behind the leading crews, with Stephen Carey and Peter O’Kane fighting for second place in the Production class behind O’Rourke. It will be even more difficult to win this one with the addition of Richard Whelan to the mix after the Production EK4 driver opted out of the Midland Stages to attend a family function.
What is fast becoming evident, with the increase in performance across the board from Honda Cup Ireland competitors, is that the controlled competitive environment that the organisers set out to create and maintain is helping competitors improve their stage times and overall results. What other championship classifies cars together based on performance and not engine size? What other championship mixes 2 day “endurance” biased events and 1 day “sprint” events? What other championship makes all registered competitors stage times available for all to compare during the event at the “service-in” points and via their mobile phone? What other championship offers almost €3,000 of prizes to the top 6 competitors on every event? It’s clear to see why we have had so much interest in the championship and we are looking forward to proceeding through the second half of the year with as much success as the first.
Registrations for the championship will remain open all year and, given the extensive prize fund on offer, the entry fee is good value and ensures a committed entry on each round. You can see all the details on our website - www.hondacupireland.com – as well as view the latest results, photos, news, press releases and of course the overall championship standings. You can keep up to date on the latest stage times during the event using your WAP/Internet enabled mobile phone and opening www.hondacupireland.com/mobile - this a free service, but your standard network charges apply.
We look forward to working with the Carlow Car Club during the event and wish both the club and our registered competitors .

The Lord Bagenal Hotel, Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow is the new Head Quarters for the Carlow Stages Rally, bringing a major boost to the county. With a quality line up of contenders it is promised this event will bring top class motor sport action and the MkII challenge, which is now an integral part of the event will certainly attract a large number of motor sport enthusiasts. The Lord Bagenal Hotel are very enthusiastic sponsors of the event and that coupled with the Club members dedication and hard work will make the 2009 Carlow Stages Rally another successful and classic event.
The Carlow Stages Rally Launch will start at 8.30pm and will incorporate a variety of cars on display, the MC for the night is RTE Sports Personality Michael Lyster who will be joined by a special guest speaker for a chat show. And open invitation welcomes all.
The Rally itself consists of 4 stages approximately 16 kilometres long in the Carlow region. The 4 stages are completed twice with service in Clonmelsh between each loop where plenty of action and all sorts of mechanical repairs are carried out. A leisurely drive this is not, competitiveness and bravery are all part of this event with 151 entries from the 32 counties of Ireland and the UK. A full entry is expected, top class cars and massive spectator numbers are indicative of the popularity of the event bringing to the area approx. £1 Million in recent years. Each Rally Crew brings at least six people, and many officials requiring a large amount of accommodation on Saturday night stay over where restaurants and bars will also benefit. Service stations will also be kept busy, being a motor sport event.
Without the assistance of the Carlow County Council, Garda Siochana, Rural Tourism and the following Motor Clubs - Carrick-On-Suir, G.S.M.C., Tipperary, Wexford, Birr and Laois Rally Sports Club it wouldn’t be possible to run this event. Also, we depend solely on the generosity and goodwill of the people who live on the stages and without their help we could not run a stages rally. It is an inconvenience to these people as we obviously have to close certain roads for a few hours on the day. The Carlow Car Club would like to thank the residents and landowners and hope they enjoy the rally passing their way.
The 2009 Rally gets underway on Sunday 10th May being a round of the Excel Championship, the Honda Cup and the MkII Challenge, which is sponsored by Ok Lift Trucks and it is also a round of the Triton Showers - South East Stages Rally Championship. Donal Meaney, Bagenalstown will be Clerk of the Course.
