ELLIOTT'S THREE IN A ROW IN KERRY
Report courtesy of Dunlop - proud sponsors of the National Rally Championship

Posted: March 30, 2009 6:30 PM

Cavan's, Patrick Elliott/Paul Goodman (Subaru WRC) won the Fels Point Hotel Circuit of Kerry, the third round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship that went down to the eighth and final stage. They finished six seconds ahead of the Subaru of Monaghan's, Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry. On that final stage, Elliott/Goodman overturned a six second deficit to clinch their third win of the current Dunlop series. They now lead Maguire/Sherry by six points after three rounds of the campaign. It was also the third occasion that Elliott has won the Kerry event.
Local Kerry driver, Mike Quinn in a Ford Escort, co-driven by Grainne McEnry, took a sensational third place.

In Group N, that also went down to a final stage decider, Clonakilty duo, Kevin and Martin Kelleher (Mitsubishi) took the category victory ahead of early leaders, Garry Jennings/David Moynihan (Mitsubishi), who endured clutch problems on the final stage.

Kevin Barrett set the best time on the opening stage, Mount Eagle, his Subaru WRC was two seconds faster than that of Niall Maguire's car with reigning Dunlop champion, Patrick Elliott, a further four seconds behind in third spot having lost a few seconds when he spun at a hairpin junction. Darren Gass in the McKinstry hired Subaru WRC occupied fourth and local hero, Mike Quinn in a Mk. 2 Ford Escort, held an impressive fifth place.

Elliott set the pace on the second stage and at the Tralee service halt, where he shared the lead with Maguire, the Cavan driver remarked that he wasn't happy with his level of commitment. Meanwhile, second placed Maguire admitted he was a little too cautious in places. Kevin Barrett, six seconds behind the leading duo, was quite content with his performance.

Darren Gass in fourth place, lost almost half a minute on the final junction of the second test when he spun his Subaru.

Quinn continued to power his Escort through the stages where he set a scorching pace to hold fifth. Garry Jennings, who led the Group N category, reckoned his Mitsubishi was flooding the plugs, a repeat of the problem on the opening round in Nenagh. Alan Ring, on his first outing since Rally Ireland, was in seventh place - four seconds behind Jennings. Thomas Fitzmaurice (Mitsubishi) was next in classification, the current Group N series leader reckoned his car was down on power.
Elsewhere, Donie O'Sullivan had a slight misfire in his Proton Satria S2000 car; Kevin Kelleher (Mitsubishi) reckoned he made an incorrect tyre choice and Brian O'Mahony (Renault Clio S1600) endured a big overshoot on the second stage.

Gass showed a fine turn of speed on the third and fourth stages but spun and lost ten seconds on the sixth test. The Armagh driver moved to third - 12 seconds behind rally leader, Patrick Elliott, who stalled and lost precious seconds on S.S. 5. Kevin Barrett retired when a wheel sheared off his Subaru on S.S. 3.

Meanwhile, Niall Maguire reckoned he was too cautious on some sections of the stages, however, he was only a second behind Elliott - the Monaghan driver had actually moved into a six second lead after the completion of S.S. 3; Elliott then cut the deficit to three seconds on S.S. 4.

Not even a broken hydraulic pipe, that rendered the handbrake ineffective, could deter Quinn, who moved into fourth place. In Group N, Garry Jennings retained the lead but a charging Kevin Kelleher closed to within two seconds of the Fermanagh man, Kelleher's tyre choice on the loop of three stages paid dividends. Jennings overcame the misfire problem by not switching off the engine prior to the stage starts, however, he admitted he couldn't find a good rhythm on S.S. 5. Alan Ring (Mitsubishi) was untroubled in seventh spot - 22 seconds behind Kelleher. The top ten also included Donie O'Sullivan (Proton), Des Moore (Escort) and the Mitsubishi of Thomas Fitzmaurice, that continued to suffer from a lack of power. Elsewhere, Brian O'Mahony (Renault Clio) slipped down to fifteenth when his Renault Clio lost brakes; Anthony O'Halloran (Mitsubishi) retired and Sean Flanagan (Subaru) crashed out.

Maguire was quickest through S.S. 6 and moved two seconds ahead of Elliott. On the penultimate test, he gleamed four seconds and entered the final stage with a six second lead. Gass retired after the completion of S.S. 6 when his Subaru broke a suspension strut. His retirement promoted Quinn to third overall. Brian O'Mahony (Renault Clio) retired with an electrical problem. Having moved up to eleventh overall, Paul Elliott was forced out when his Mitsubishi developed transmission problems.

On the final stage, Elliott took a dramatic victory, his tyre choice proving to be the difference. It was heartbreak for Maguire, who is six points adrift of Elliott in the race for the title.

Quinn took an incredible third while Kelleher, having drawn level with Jennings on the penultimate test, came through to take the Group N victory over Jennings, who had clutch trouble on the final test.
Alan Ring came through to take sixth ahead of Des Moore (Escort), Thomas Fitzmaurice (Mitsubishi), Trevor Bustard (Mitsubishi) and Ed Synan, who overcame brake problems to take the final spot in the top ten. Fitzmaurice retains his lead in the Patterson's RallyNews Group N award. Donie O'Sullivan (Proton Satria) finished eleventh.

ELLIOTT/GOODMAN HOPING FOR GOLD IN KERRY
(Preview courtesy of Irish Dunlop – sponsors of the Irish National Rally Championship)

Posted: March 27, 2009 1:51 PM

With victories on the opening two rounds, reigning Dunlop National Rally Champion, Patrick Elliott (Subaru WRC) is seeking his third straight victory in this years' campaign on the Fels Point Circuit of Kerry Rally, the third round of the series on Sunday next ( March 29th ).

Last season, the Cavan driver won in Kerry, however, it took a tie-break to get verdict over arch rival, Niall Maguire.  This season, Elliott has shown fine form on both the Nenagh and Mayo events and has opened up a four point advantage at the top of the Dunlop leaderboard.  He was very fortunate on the last round in Castlebar when he spun at high speed, he managed to retain the lead and over the final stages eked out a few precious seconds to finish six seconds ahead of Maguire.
Down through the years, Maguire has been involved in no fewer than three tie-break finishes in Kerry, winning on just one occasion.  In 1999, he lost out to Gabriel Snow whilst in 2002 he edged out Jim Harrison.  The former triple Dunlop champion he has yet to find the pace and consistency that he displayed last year and really needs to turn the tables on Elliott.
Third seed, Kevin Barrett, also in a Subaru WRC and one of the most ardent supporters of the Dunlop series, was forced to back off on the last round in Mayo due to the inclement weather conditions, however, on the closing stages, he reeled in Gareth MacHale for third spot.  The Maynooth driver will endeavour to close the gap to his rivals in Kerry.

The entry in Kerry is both impressive and interesting, seeded behind the Dunlop trio is Armagh's, Darren Gass in a Subaru WRC and it will be interesting to see how this young and talented driver will equip himself against the opposition.

Killarney based Cork born driver, Donie O'Sullivan will drive the Proton Satria Neo S2000 car.  A planned outing in the recent West Cork Rally was abandoned when he failed to get clarity on certain aspects of the insurance cover.  It will be the second event in succession that an S2000 car competes in the Dunlop series.  In Mayo, Gareth MacHale debuted his Opel Corsa S2000 and finished fourth overall.

The traditional Group N entry in Kerry is fascinating and features Fermanagh's, Garry Jennings, Kerry's, Alan Ring, Cork's, Kevin Kelleher and current Patterson's RallyNews Group N leader, Kerryman, Thomas Fitzmaurice, all in Mitsubishis.

Jennings, having retired on the opening round in Nenagh, bounced back to take maximum points in Mayo, he will be co-driven by David Moynihan.  Reigning champion, Alan Ring, is making a sporadic appearance in the current campaign and having retired en-route to the final stage of Rally Ireland, will be determined to secure a strong result.  Meanwhile, Kevin Kelleher returns to Dunlop action after missing out on the Mayo event, he netted maximum points in Nenagh and his battle with Jennings is eagerly awaited.  Kerryman, Thomas Fitzmaurice has shown consistency on the first two rounds finishing seventh and eight overall to move into the category lead.

The top ten is completed by Cork's, Brian O'Mahony onboard his Renault Clio S1600.  He is one of the contenders for the inaugural rally.ie award and having taken an impressive 13 points in Mayo he is just two points behind leader and late entry in Kerry, Trevor Mulligan (Ford Escort).  O'Mahony was on course for a category win in Nenagh only for fuel problems to force his retirement a few kilometres from the finish.

Clare's, Anthony O'Halloran (Mitsubishi) had a disappointing outing in Mayo and was at a loss to explain his form, no doubt, the Ruan native will be keen to show good form over the eight stage Kerry. The quality of the Group N entry is hugely impressive and it also includes Meath's, Sean Flanagan (Subaru), Trevor Bustard (Mitsubishi), Eamonn Daly and local duo, Tim Enright and Mike O'Leary, all in Mitsubishis.

The modified category features the aforementioned Mulligan along with fellow Mk. Escort drivers - local man, Mike Quinn, Limerick's, Ed Synan, Donegal's, John O'Donnell, Monaghan's, Des Moore and the Kerry trio of Kevin O'Donoghue, Fergus O'Meara and Charlie Hickey.  In addition, Monaghan's, Anthony Hand, Limerick's, Gary Reidy and Aidan Walsh, both in Ford Escorts and Monaghan's, Jim McKenna in a Toyota Starlet provide a fine array of opposition.

Elsewhere, the entry includes Andrew Bushe (Citroen Saxo S1600), Paul Elliott (Mitsubishi) and Galway's, tom Flaherty (Escort, who completes the top thirty.
