Regulations have just been released by The Queen’s University of Belfast Motor Club for their ‘Summer Lanes Rally’, which will be held on 25th July in the Dundrod area of County Antrim.

This event ran for the first time last year and was an immediate success with a capacity entry and excellent reviews from the competing crews. The rally is open to nearly all road legal cars. It is run under a Navigation Rally permit, so does not require cars to be prepared to stage rally levels.

The main competitive elements are the ‘Special Tests’. They could be described as a cross between a Special Stage and an Autotest.

In practice this means:

  • Tests are run on private lanes (mixture of tarmac, concrete, gravel, mud, grass and possibly a smidge of manure in places), starting at one end, finishing at the other, passing through the occasional farm yard.
  • Tests will vary in length from 0.25miles to 1.05miles
  • A total of 20 tests have been planned during the day
  • Cars start at one minute intervals
  • Cars must stop astride finish line (same finish procedure as autotests)
  • No reversing required (unless you make a balls of it!)
  • Bogey times are set at 30mph average, so there are some measures to try to make sure no-one beats them (interpret that as you wish!)
  • These measures may include: chicanes, slaloms, code boards and the occasional 360
  • There will be no ‘recce’ or walking of tests; crews will compete them blind
The test information will be given in the form of diagrams from aerial photos, tulips, enlarged diagrams, and some other information.
Also, all the pylons used will have identification letters on them, which will also be shown in any diagrams. Basically, you will be given all the information needed to allow the crew to navigate their way through the test.
However, the test layouts will vary between each run, so navigators will need to pay attention!
We’ve tried to plan tests that will require a team effort, but they are not designed to have you scratching your heads over a yard full of pylons!
Having competed as drivers and navigators ourselves, we think they’re the kind of tests both crew members will enjoy.

Although there are sections on the public road, these are set to a very easy schedule (if you arrive at a control early you will be able to wait for your due time) and the only navigation involved will be to get you from one test site to the next.

The focus for us as an organising team is to put together a competitor friendly yet rewarding event for both crew members.
