Japcars subsidiary company Midland Motors Athlone are sponsoring the 2009 Midlands East Rally Championship. The popular 6 round clubman’s championship takes in rounds in Birr, Midland, Almc, Gsmc, North East and Castle Motor Clubs. Championship sponsor Fergal Costello, leading Group N driver is seeded today at 21 in his Evo 9. Congratulations to Fergal & wife Ruth on their new arrival.
The Midlands East Championship consists of 3 Multi Stage and 3 Mini Stage Rallies making it an ideal championship for the small budget competitor. WRC Cars are not eligible for this championship and this is what makes this a true Clubman’s Championship.
Cavan Driver Colm Brady won the 2008 Championship in 1600cc Honda Civic navigated by Declan Brady. Runners Up in last years championship were 2005 Winners James Cassidy & John Norris driving a Ford Escort. 3rd Overall Driver was Longford’s Mick Hagan and Declan Smith took 3rd Overall Navigator. Ironically Colm & Declan Brady, James Cassidy, John Norris and Declan Smith all marshalled on last years championship opener in Birr and gained points for doing so.
The Junior Championship was won by Galway brothers Patrick & Gerard Divilly driving a Toyota Corrolla Twin Cam.
This years championship kicks off with Birr and District Motor Club Stages rally on 22nd February based in Nenagh Co Tipperary and the remaining rounds are Midland Stages April 5th, ALMC Stages Rally July 19th, MEMC Mini Stage 23rd August, Castle Mini Stages September 6th and concluding with the GSMC Mini Stages October 18th .

Round 2 of the Midland Motors Athlone Midlands East Rally Championship is the Midland Moto Stages Rally based in Shannon Key West Hotel Rooskey on Sunday 5th April.
