Daniel/Martin get Champion’s prize!

County Wicklow rally driver Daniel Barry was presented with his prize for winning the 2009 Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge at this weekend’s end-of-season presentation event in Daventry, England. He was handed the keys of a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X RS, worth over €30,000, by the Coordinator of the high profile one-make series for Group N (production class) Mitsubishis, Simon Slade.

The award comes at the end of a highly memorable season for the 24-year old from Eniskerry and his co-driver Martin Brady from Navan. After winning no less than five of the season’s eight rounds, Daniel not only became Evolution Challenge Champion but also ended the year as the leading Production Class driver in the Pirelli MSA Gravel Rally Championship.

In addition, the results saw Martin become Champion Co-driver in the Mitsubishi series for the second year in succession, an achievement that did not go unnoticed by his employers - Martin just announced as the ‘Garda Sportsman of the Year’.

On handling over the keys of the new Mitsubishi, Simon Slade said:
“Daniel and Martin have really shone in this year’s Evolution Challenge by winning five out of the eight events, which is an outstanding performance in such a competitive championship. However, although the points table shows a convincing victory, the competition was fierce all season and it was no easy task to win, which makes this achievement even more impressive.”

“This is a fantastic prize and tops-off what has been a great season”, said Daniel. “I have to thank Martin and my team who all did a tremendous job throughout the year. I also have to thank my sponsors for their contribution and Mitsubishi UK for supporting a championship that continues to offer the best prizes in the sport.”

In addition to being presented with the the new Evolution X, Daniel and Martin also won a pair of ‘Champions’ Sparco Racesuits and the Barry Motorsport team were awarded the trophy for the ‘best prepared car’ of the season.

Daniel and his team are currently assessing their options for the 2010 season, details of which will be announced soon.

Daniel’s 2009 campaign was supported by: Tech-Plus, Irish Shipping and Transport, BPI Telecom and SC Signs.
