The opening round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship, the Abbey
Court Hotel Nenagh Rally resulted in an emphatic victory for defending
champions, Patrick Elliott and co-driver, Paul Goodman (Subaru WRC).
They finished the eight-stage event with a winning margin of two
minutes and 19 seconds over the British crew of Jim Harrison/Harvey
Bell (Subaru WRC). Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry (Subaru) were third - 13
seconds further behind after they punctured on the sixth stage.
The Group N category was won by Kevin Kelleher/Paddy Robinson
(Mitsubishi) and Trevor Mulligan/Lisa Roe (Ford Escort) took a late
victory in the two-wheel drive category.
Reigning Dunlop National Rally champion, Elliott set the fastest time
on the opening stage, Kilbarron and quickly opened up a 15 second
advantage over rival, Niall Maguire, who opted for a hard slick in the
slippery conditions. Jim Harrison, on his first outing in the Dunlop
series in almost two years, was third quickest - 13 seconds adrift of
Maguire with Kevin Barrett fourth. Garry Jennings led Group N, he was
three seconds in front of Kevin Kelleher.
Elliott reigned supreme on the second test and extended his lead over
Maguire to 25 seconds, the latter traversed the stage with a
problematic track control arm. Harrison retained third as fourth
placed Barrett reckoned the suspension of his Subaru was far too hard
for the Nenagh roads.
Meanwhile, Garry Jennings retired on the stage with throttle sensor
issues. Thomas Fitzmaurice (Mitsubishi) set a strong pace to take
over the lead in the category, he also held fifth overall - five
seconds clear of Kevin Kelleher, the latter lost time with an
incorrect tyre choice. Seventh placed Anthony O'Halloran remarked on
the slippery nature of the stages.
The top ten was completed by Sean Flanagan (Subaru) and Eamonn Daly
(Mitsubishi) and top two-wheel drive exponent, Brian O'Mahony (Renault
Clio S1600). Elsewhere, Kenny Bustard lost time as a result of the
suspension of his Mitsubishi being too soft while Fergal Costello
retired his Mitsubishi with a blown engine.
Maguire posted the best time through the third stage and took three
seconds from Elliott but the rally leader was in devastating form
through the fourth test and added ten seconds to his advantage that
stood at 31 seconds at the Nenagh service halt.
Remarkably, Elliott stalled his Subaru on the third test and endured a
slight spin on the next stage. Harrison was gaining in confidence on
his return while fourth placed Barett was pleased that the adjustments
made at the service halt made a difference.
In Group N, Kevin Kelleher (Mitsubishi) was impressive through the
third and fourth stages and took control of the showroom category. He
was fifth overall - 16 seconds ahead of Anthony O'Halloran
(Mitsubishi). Brian O'Mahony held eighth overall and led the
two-wheel drive category. Elsewhere, the top ten was completed by
Sean Flanagan (Subaru), Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi) and Thomas
Fitzmaurice, who lost over 30 seconds on the third stage when the
exhaust manifold came adrift. Local driver, Eoghain Fogarty was on
the fringes of the top ten until a fourth stage puncture dropped him
down the leaderboard.
Elliott added 13 seconds to his lead after the completion of Stage 5,
Killoscully. Most of the places remained unchanged except for Brian
O'Mahony, who spun and clipped the front of his Renault Clio and
dropped one place as Sean Flanagan moved up to seventh.
On the sixth stage, Maguire lost substantial time when his Subaru
punctured a third of the way through the 20km test. Elliott arrived at
the final service halt in Nenagh with a lead of one minute and 38
seconds with Harrison moving up to second, the British driver dropped
time with an overshoot. A disappointed Maguire couldn't find any
specific reason for the puncture. Meanwhile, Barrett in fourth, lost
a few seconds when he caught up with Maguire, however, he reckoned the
time loss was insignificant.
Kelleher in fifth was 21 seconds ahead of O'Halloran, who had a few
major moments on the sixth test. Sean Flanagan was untroubled in
seventh, a position he shared with Thomas Fitzmaurice. Brian O'Mahony
took a cautious approach to the sixth stage, he was ninth with Eamonn
Daly (Mitsubishi) rounding off the top ten. Elsewhere, Trevor
Mulligan completed the two stages without the intercom, nevertheless,
he led Class 14.
On the closing pair of stages, Elliott punched in the fastest times to
clinch an impressive victory. He finished two minutes and 19 seconds
ahead of Harrison. Afterwards, he said, "I'm very pleased, it was a
tough rally but very well organised. I had a few moments but that was
to be expected in the conditions. I was focussed on gaining
championship points, to win is a bonus."
Harrison, who isn't registered for Dunlop points took the runner up
spot with Niall Maguire some 13 seconds further behind in third. Kevin
Barrett (Subaru WRC) was fourth.
Victory in the Group N category went to Kevin Kelleher, who finished
49 seconds clear of Anthony O'Halloran. Thomas Fitzmaurice, Sean
Flanagan, Trevor Mulligan and Eamonn Daly completed the top ten.
There was late drama in the two-wheel drive category when Brian
O'Mahony failed to finish, his Renault Clio ran out of petrol and
Trevor Mulligan (Escort) was perfectly placed to take the category
win.

This season's Dunlop National Rally Championship begins with the Abbey
Court Hotel Nenagh Rally on Sunday February 22nd. The eight-stage
event, organised by the Birr and District Auto Club, makes its debut
in the national series. The championship protagonists from 2008
series, champion, Patrick Elliott and runner-up, Niall Maguire, return
for the ten round campaign.
The top seed is Gareth MacHale, who won this event last year, on this
occasion it's a dramatic change for both the young Dubliner and the
rally itself. MacHale, who was the top Irish competitor in the recent
Rally Ireland until a blown engine signalled his retirement, will
drive the Opel Corsa S2000 car. The car was debuted in last season's
Cork "20" International Rally where Gareth's father, Austin drove it
as one of the 00 course cars. The car is still very much of an
unknown quantity, however, the eight stages around Nenagh should
provide a good indicator of its performance.
In many respects, it's in stark contrast to the second and third
seeds, Patrick Elliott and Niall Maguire, who dominated the 2008
Dunlop series. The rivalry between the Cavan and Monaghan duo was
intense but extremely sporting, with precious little between them.
Indeed, in one instance, the Circuit of Kerry, it took a tie-break to
select a winner with Elliott taking the laurels on that occasion.
Both had a remarkable run of consistency throughout last season and it
was only in Galway (Round 8) when Maguire crashed out that the
destination of the Vard Memorial Trophy was decided. This season,
Elliott will again be co-driven by Paul Goodman but Maguire has Enda
Sherry calling the notes for the season.
Last season, Maguire came very close to adding to the titles he won in
1999, 2002 and 2004. "Paul McLaughlin is not available due to work
commitments, so Enda Sherry will call the notes. Enda is from the
same part of Monaghan as myself (Ballinode), he sat with me in the
Stonethrowers Rally in Clonmel last season. The plan is to compete in
this opening round in Nenagh and also in the second round, the Mayo
Rally and we'll take it from there." said Maguire.
Meanwhile, Maynooth's, Kevin Barrett, who has twice finished third
overall in the national series has Limerick's, Sean Mullally as his
co-driver.
The British crew of Jim Harrison/Harvey Bell (Subaru WRC) make a
welcome return to the Dunlop series. They were regulars a number of
seasons ago and have notched up event victories in the Fastnet Rally
in Glandore and the Clare Rally in Ennis. "It is nearly two years
since we competed in the Dunlop series. I don't think the pace has
increased since and I reckon we can match the pace set by Patrick
(Elliott) and Niall (Maguire)."
Clare driver, Anthony O'Halloran (Mitsubishi) is the highest seeded
Group N driver. He won the category on his home event last season, he
has strong opposition in Nenagh. Clonakilty's, Kevin Kelleher, who is
the reigning Group N Tarmac champion, has set his sights on a long
filled ambition to land the Patterson's RallyNews Group N award.
Former Dunlop Class 6 winner and ex-Irish and British S1600 champion,
Brian O'Mahony in his Renault Clio S1600, is seeded at number eight.
The Cork driver plans a full season of national rallying and is a
strong contender not just for Class 6 but also the new two-wheel drive
award.
This new award is being sponsored by Brian Duggan & George Clernon of
rally.ie, who are long time supporters of the Irish National Rally
Championship. The award will be presented to the highest placed
two-wheel drive crew in the overall standings of the 2009 series.
Commenting on behalf of the Dunlop National Rally Championship
Sub-Committee, Richard Talbot (Chairman) remarked, "We are delighted
that rally.ie have come onboard with this new award. We look forward
to the battle between the fastest rear wheel drive competitors in the
country together with the ultra quick up and coming front wheel drive
competitors to see who can take the inaugural award."
Also amongst the top ten in Nenagh is Eamonn Daly (Mitsubishi), who
led last year's Group N campaign for a number of events. Meath's,
Sean Flanagan, who finished second in the Group N series in 2008
completes the top ten. The showroom category also features the
Mitsubishi's of Thomas Fitzmaurice, Adrian Quinn; Trevor Bustard,
Fergal Costello, Tim Enright, Paul Elliott and Subaru duo, Paul
McEnroe and Mark Nangle.
In the modified category, a plethora of Ford Escorts in the hands of
Trevor Mulligan, Mike Quinn, Ed Synan, Gary Reidy and David Percy
(Maxi), Des Moore, Seamus Doyle, Gerry Smith and Pat Spain should
provide plenty of entertainment.
Commenting ahead of another national championship campaign, Richard
Warbrick (Dunlop) remarked, "It's an earlier start than usual and we
are delighted to welcome the Birr & District Auto Club to the
championship. The entry is encouraging and of course, each of the ten
events will provide a welcome boost to the local economy and that's a
very important factor."

Carnmore driver Ross Forde will be in action this weekend when he contests the Nenagh-based Birr Stages Rally on Sunday (22 February).
Forde will take the stages for the first time in his recently acquired Ford Fiesta ST and will be using the event as a warm-up for the forthcoming opening round of the Ford Fiesta Sporting UK Trophy championship, the Malcolm Wilson Rally (7 March), the series which he is contesting this season with the support of Motorsport Ireland after winning the 2008 Billy Coleman Award.
The 25-year-old will also be joined by a new co-driver in the shape of experienced Isle of Man-based navigator Rob Fagg. Forde’s regular co-driver, his younger brother Arron, will find it difficult to commit to the entire Fiesta championship due to college commitments and Fagg comes highly recommended by former British Champion Mark Higgins.
“It’s going to be a weekend of firsts what with it being the first time driving a Fiesta and with Rob coming on board,” Ross said.
“The plan is to use it as a shakedown ahead of the start of the serious stuff in a couple of weeks and I hope to have a good run and get a good result. I’m trying to shake off the recent bad luck after three non-finishes.”
The Fiesta will be run by Ray Cunningham and his business, Galway Mini Centre.
Cunningham said: “I’m looking forward to get to know more about the Fiesta, especially ahead of the start of the season on the Malcolm Wilson Rally. It should prove a valuable weekend.”
