Rathfriland Motor Club has announced plans to celebrate the recent awarding of the UK Motor Club of the Year award with a special Dinner to be held in the Burrendale Hotel and Country Club, Newcastle, on Saturday 7th March.

The award, which was presented at a lavish reception in the Royal Automobile Club in London in January, will be re-presented by Allan Dean-Lewis from the Motor Sports Association in the presence of Club members and invited guests and dignitaries.

“The original presentation was held on the 16th January in central London at the MSA Night of Champions” commented Ian Hull, Rathfriland Motor Club President.

“Unfortunately, only two representative from the Club were permitted to attend the presentation in London, so we decided to organise this dinner so that we could celebrate among those who worked so hard to achieve the award”

In a letter confirming the award back in January, Allan Dean-Lewis MBE, from the Motor Sport Association, congratulated the club members for the ‘enthusiasm and drive within the Club to organise the ‘Safety First’ schools presentations and the exceptionally high quality of Club and Event promotion and documentation during the year’.

The Rathfriland Club’s initial application for the award was endorsed by the Association of Northern Ireland Car Clubs (ANICC), which co-ordinates and represents the 32 member Motor Clubs within the province.
”We are delighted that Rathfriland Motor Club has won this prestigious title and we are particularly proud to be able to claim that we now have 2 clubs within the ANICC that have now won this award since 2001” said Nicky Moffitt, the Association Secretary.

The award, which includes a Magnificent Trophy and a cheque for £1000, will be presented at the 2008 ‘Night of Champions’ which will be held in January at a glittering event at the exclusive Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall, London.

In a letter confirming the award, Allan Dean-Lewis MBE, from the Motor Sport Association, congratulated the club members for the ‘enthusiasm and drive within the Club to organise the ‘Safety First’ schools presentations and the exceptionally high quality of Club and Event promotion and documentation during the year’.

Commenting on the announcement, the Club Chairman, Wesley Johnston said
“It’s a brilliant achievement for such a small club to be voted the best out of over 700 other Clubs in the UK. It underlines the hard work that our dedicated Committee put into the Club and the Events each year and we are all extremely proud to be in a position to accept the award”.

Rathfriland Motor Club is also grateful for the help received from others during the year. Special thanks are extended to Kenny & Emma McKinstry, British Rallycross Champion Lawrence Gibson and Denis Biggerstaff who freely offered their cars for the School’s ‘Safety First’ presentations during the year and to the many volunteers who gave up their time to assist on their events.

It is hoped that the club can now carry this success through into the 2009 season and beyond.
