The West Cork Hotel Fastnet Stages Rally will once again be the centre of attention on this October Bank Holiday weekend. Following on from the tremendous success of the last two years, Headquarters, Parc Ferme, Scrutiny and Service are all close to Skibbereen town centre.
This year the rally uses the same unique format of 3 stages used twice and a single run over another stage. This format was introduced last year in an effort to reduce the length of the day for competitors without reducing the total stage mileage. It proved quite popular, particularly as the rally is traditionally run on the first day of ‘Winter Time’ and darkness towards the finish can be a problem.
This year the rally is not a counting round of the National Rally Championship as it has been for the last number of years. It is still, however a counting round in the ever popular 023 Tiles Southern 4 Rally Championship. Indeed this Championship must be decided in Skibbereen on the weekend and there are four crews in with a chance of taking the overall title. The rally is also a counting round of the Skibbereen & District Car Club Championship.
Entries
At the midpoint of the year many people cynically suggested that as the rally was not a counting round of the National Championship this year and bearing in mind the general economic downturn, that the rally would be massively undersubscribed. This, however has proven not to be the case and although the number of entries received was substantially down on last years record number, there were still over 180 seeking to enter although the rally is limited to 151 starters.
Leading the field away on Sunday morning will be top seed, Welshman Melvyn Evans and his Co. Limerick co-driver Sean Mullally. A regular visitor to West Cork Melvyn has won the Clonakilty based West Cork Rally on 2 occasions, however he has not had similar success on the Fastnet Stages. Last year Engine problems saw him retire on the second stage and the previous year he had to be content with fifth place. He has a newer model Subaru now and can be expected to be the pacesetter.
Next up is the leading West Cork crew of Liam McCarthy and Kieran Murphy. This pair have won this event on two previous occasions, first in 1988 and again in 1992. Historically they are always on the pace here, but have just lacked that little bit of luck necessary to secure their third victory. This year they have a new Corolla WRC.
Starting at No 3 is another regular visitor from across the Irish Sea, Bob Fowden. He is, as always, navigated by Mallow’s Jerry Hynes in a Subaru and having led this rally in the past, without winning it, will be anxious to improve on previous years.
This year there are a number of two wheel drive cars in the top ten. First of these, starting at No. 4 is Aaron Burkart. The talented 25-year-old German finished second overall on the Junior World Rally Championship this year in his Citroen C2 Super 1600. It is not known if he will have a newer version of the car in time to bring it to Skibbereen, however, if he can adapt to the unique nature of Irish Roads he will be worth watching.
He will be followed by Current Irish Tarmac Group N Champions Kevin and Martin Kelleher. Driving a new Evo 9 this time out, they could spring a real surprise on the World Rally Cars. Kevin will be full of confidence following last weeks win on the Garda Motor Club run Mini-Stages in Baltinglass.
Alan Ring and Adrian Deasy are next up and as leaders of the Southern 4 Championship they have a mission to complete this weekend. They must also exorcise the demons from last year, when they rolled off the road on the first stage.
Last year Eugene Donnelly started at No.1 in a new Skoda Fabia WRC. He is again starting in a new car, however this time at No 7 and in a Peugeot 206 Super 1600. He has never before driven a Front-Wheel Drive car in anger, but the transition will be eased by the fact that he has former WRC co-driver Nicky Grist calling the notes.
Donegal’s Sean Gallagher had another incident free season in the Junior WRC to finish 4th overall and starts at the number 8 berth. Always fast on tarmac, the Skibbereen stages will not be too different from those in his native Donegal and he will not be hanging around!
Regular Waterford visitor Eoin Doyle starts from the number 9 berth and when on form he can mix it with the best.
The top 10 is rounded off by Sean Flanagan in an ex Alan Ring Subaru. He is co-driven by Brian Duggan of Rally.ie, a former navigator of Alan Ring. Their pace has been on the increase all year and they will be involved in the final shake up.
Southern 4 Championship
Although the Championship is led by Alan Ring, it is unclear what may transpire in Championship terms. McCarthy is currently third in the championship, trailing Alan Ring and Washington James. The Championship, however, is decided on the best 4 scores from 5 events. At present if the leading trio dropped their worst scores this moves McCarthy to second and Washington James to third. This make for a thrilling finale and none of this leading trio can afford to be complacent as 4th placed James Stafford still has a mathematical chance of lifting the title. This is likely to happen, only, if the leading trio have major problems or fail to finish.

A number of JWRC drivers in S1600 Cars are taking part in the Fastnet this weekend
Aaron Buckart with Micheal Kolbach driving a Citroen c2 Super 1600 in class A6
Aaron is from Germany and is the 2004 Germany Junior rally winner
Finished 2nd in this years Junior world rally championship, earning himself a drive in a Citroen C4 wrc on a round of next years championship as a prize in the Citreon C2 Junior Experance competition
His team are evaluating other WRC car drives in the WRC for 2009
Another s1600 entry is that of Shaun Gallagher in his JWRC C2 s1600
Shaun had a very successful JWRC campaign this year finishing 4th in the championship
Shaun won the Rookie section of the Junior wrc in 2007.
One very intriguing entry is that of Eugene Donnelly in a S1600 Peugeot 206, although he may use a C2 S1600
Donnelly is through to be pursuing the s1600 route for a bit of enjoyment and of course cost it remains to be seen what his plan are for next year but he is expected to have some sort of a programme.
Late entry is Darren Gass in another S1600, most lightly a Clio.

Alan Ring managed to hang on to his 023 Tiles Southern 4 Rally
Championship lead with an 8th overall finish in the Cork 20
International Rally in September, but with just the Fastnet Rally to
go the eventual outcome of the Championship is far from setteld yet.
In second place, after a giant killing performace on the “20”is
the Darrian of Washington James who took the win on the National
section of the rally after a weekend long battle with Manus Kelly and
Terence O Shaughnessy, who finished second and third respectively.
In third place overall are the West Cork Crew of Liam McCarthy and
Kieran Murphy in their Corolla WRC who are in an excellent position
when dropped scores are taken into account.
With dropped scores at the moment, before the Fastnet, the top
crews are seperated by very little. Alan Ring/Adrian Deasy hold the
lead on 54 points with Liam McCarthy/Kieran Murphy second on 52,
James Stafford/Frank Dwyer on 48, Washington James on 47, Sean
Flanagan/Brian Duggan are in fifth on 39 and Fergus O Meara is sixth
on 37.Fergus’s navigator,Liam Brennan is seventh in the navigators
overall standings. The rest of the overall top ten is made up by Mark
Nangle,Niall Guinevan,Wesley Patterson and Darragh O Riordan,although
dropped scores must come into play for the last four so those
positions will change. With 20 points for the overall win it’s still
all to play for.
TIGHT CLASS BATTLES
The final round of the Championship also brings us some excellent
class battles.
Class 1 has Noel O Regan leading in hisSuzuki Swift while Denis Nagle
leads class 2 in his 106 GTI from Stephen Careys Honda Civic Type R.
Class 3 leader is Billy Hayes who has just one point to spare over
Aidan Jackson, both of whom are in Civic Type R’s.
Class 4 has an epic battle in store. Alan Ring is in a clear lead here
but is looking to be in the shake up for the overalls. That leaves Sean
Flanagan,Tom Dunne,Mark Nangle seperated by just 3 points at the top.
(Dropped scores still to count)
In class 5 Alan O Riordan has a dominant lead in his KA and should be
safe here.
Class 6 shows just 5 points seperating Colm Fordes 206 from Darragh O
Riordans Corsa.
Again class 7 is very tight at the top with John Corrigans Focus
sharing the lead David Randles’Almera.
Niall Guinevan leads class 8 from Liam McCarthy but with the latter
also in the shake up for the overall positions Niall should have
enough done.
Turlough Kenny has a comfortable 19 points to spare over Sam Leech in
class 9 while Class 10 sees Richrd Lucey with a 3 point lead over the
Sheehans after the latter registered a DNF on the “20” there is just
another 3 point back to the corsa of Victor Beamish so a good class 10
battle is on the cards.
Class 11 is again a very tight affair. Martin Quirkes Sunbeam has 3
points to spare over John Whites Civic with the Corolla GT of Raymond
Heney just a furhter 3 points back.However Paul Browne,Jason O Mahony
and Bob Moran and still in with a shout so we should be in for another
good battle here.
In class 12 Gerard O Connells MK 2 has 9 points to spare over the
similar car of Steve Roberts.
James M Staffors and Fergus O Meara will no doubt be putting on a show
as they are sperated by just 2 points going into the final round.
Washington James leads class14 bby 18 points form Wesley Patterson, but
as in earlier cases Washington is fighting for the overall awards
which means the class 14 battle should be between Wesley Patterson and
Kevin O Donoghue..
The top three in class 15 are Vincent O Shea (escort Cosworth),John
Hickey(Fubaru) and Philip Cross (Escort Cosworth).
So,whatever takes your fancy in rallying the 023 Tiles Southern 4
Rally Championship and the 2008 Fastnet Rally has something for
everyone.

The Fastnet Rally saw Silverstone Tyres come on board last week as part sponsors of the Modified Challenge prizes. The Skibbereen & District Car Club decided that for The Challenge they would give ‘worth while’ prizes, and afterall every rally car needs tyres. The Club were delighted when Silverstone Tyres gave their interest from the very beginning.
When Silverstone gave the confirmation of their sponsorship, the Club decided to go one further and increase the amount of the prizes that would be presented. The Prize List now includes: 1st overall –Voucher for 4 rally tyres, 2nd overall – Voucher for 2 rally tyres, 3rd overall- Voucher for 2 rally tyres, as well as a voucher for 2 rally tyres for 1st in each of the 7 modified classes; 9, 9a, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, with the overall winners keeping exempt from the class prizes.
Access to the regulations and the entries is below:

Skibbereen & District Car Club are delighted to invite crews to battle it out in the new Fastnet Modified Challenge! The Fastnet remains as the final round of the 023 Tiles Southern 4 Championship, but due to being in the ‘opt-out’ year of the Dunlop National Championship, the Club decided to use this opportunity to their advantage and give the benefit of the extra spaces to the modified clubmen. The Challenge incorporates classes 9 to 14 and is presenting the valuable prizes of 4 Rally Tyres for the overall modified winner and 2 Rally Tyres to the winner of each class.
The Fastnet Rally is pleased to have once again The West Cork Hotel as their main sponsor. This creates the ideal centralised situation of having headquarters, service, parce ferme and scrutiny all within 100meters of each other in Skibbereen.
Last year The Fastnet rally had the privilege of seeing Andreas Mikkelsen and Eugene Donnelly leading the field. Again this year, with Rally Ireland just around the corner, The Fastnet Rally is providing the ideal opportunity as a ‘shakedown’ preparation for the event.
The rally has a total stage length of 120km and is staying with the 7 stage format while offering increased stage kilometres. Along with offering the new modified challenge the experience will be further increased with the revival of some of the older classic stages, taking the crews and spectators out along the scenic Mizen Head Peninsula.
More Details and Regulations later.
