Round 3 - 2008 National Rally Championship
Round 2 - 2008 Border Rally Championship

Local driver, Dessie Keenan and co-driver, Enda Sherry (Subaru WRC) survived a final stage puncture to win the Monaghan Rally, the third round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship. After nine special stages, Keenan/Sherry, who won this event last year, were 35 seconds ahead of new Dunlop Championship leaders, Niall Maguire/Paul McLaughlin (Subaru), who also punctured on the final stage. They clung on to runner-up spot by a mere second from the Subaru of Patrick Elliott/Paul Goodman.
Gary McPhillips/Mark Tierney (Escort) were the top two-wheel drive crew, they also finished sixth in general classification.
Fergal Costello/Shane Gilhooly (Mitsubishi) won Group N.
It only took a few kilometres for Keenan to get accustomed to the S9 McKinstry hired Subaru. At the end of the opening stage near Newbliss, he was eight seconds quicker than his fellow Monaghan driver, Niall Maguire with Kevin Barrett occupying third – a further ten seconds in arrears. Michael Barrable (Ford Focus WRC) retired at the stage finish with centre differential failure. Meanwhile, Noel Redmond didn’t even get that far, his new S12 Subaru failed to start prior to the rally.
Keenan also set the pace on the second and third stage and arrived at the Monaghan service halt with a 38 second lead over Maguire with both Barrett and Leonard tying for third some 16 seconds further adrift.
Keenan revelled in the conditions while Maguire lost some 15 seconds with a massive overshoot on the third test. Fifth placed Patrick Elliott opined that he had little confidence in the wet conditions and reckoned the suspension set up of his Subaru was far too hard.
Glen Allen damaged the steering when he hit a kerb on the first stage, he was sixth followed by top rear wheel drive competitor, Gary McPhillips (Escort).
Elsewhere, former winner, Adrian McElvaney, on his first event in twelve months, opined that he was far too rusty, after the opening three stages, he was down in thirteenth place but retired a few stages later with driveshaft failure.
Willie Fannin (Subaru) led Group N while fellow Dunlop contender, Danny McBride traversed the stages without the anti-lag. Maurice Moffett (Starlet) remarked of his dislike for the wet conditions.
Keenan continued to dominate and extended his lead over Maguire to 58 seconds after the completion of the second loop. His stages times were slightly slower than the previous occasion, a fact he attributed to the slippy conditions. Maguire was quite content to hold second and was concentrating on Dunlop points as Keenan didn’t register for the Dunlop series.
Changes to the set-up of his Subaru worked very effectively for Elliott, who was quickest on S.S. 5 and duly slotted into third place – 25 seconds adrift of Maguire. Leonard held fourth but was concerned about the lack of boost. Glenn Allen also made up some ground, he was fifth from Barrett, who had a major moment on the fourth stage.
An untroubled McPhillips continued to lead the two wheel drive category, however, he was under plenty pressure from Escort pair, Daniel McKenna and Rodney Wilton, Damien Gallagher (Toyota Corolla) and Manus Kelly (Escort) – all of whom were within a 14 second time frame.
Keenan added a further three seconds to his lead on stage seven. On the final stage, he punctured the front left hand tyre and had to drive two-thirds of the way as it deflated. However, he had enough of a cushion to take his second successive victory in Monaghan. Maguire also suffered a punctured and he was just able to hang to second – one second ahead of Elliott. Maguire moves into the lead of the series. Seamus Leonard came home fourth with Kevin Barrett (Subaru) and top two wheel-drive exponent, Gary McPhillips sixth – he finished some 16 seconds ahead of rival, Rodney Wilton. Damien Gallagher (Escort), Manus Kelly (Escort) and Joe MacHugh (Escort Cosworth) completed the top ten. Glenn Allen (Toyota Corolla WRC) retired on the final loop with engine failure.

Joint leaders of the Dunlop National Rally Championship, Patrick Elliott and Niall Maguire go head to head in Maguire’s native county Monaghan on Sunday next (April 20th.). The nine-stage event is the third round of the popular series.
Local hero and last year’s event winner, Dessie Keenan heads an impressive entry in a McKinstry hired Subaru WRC. The Monaghan man, on his debut in a World Rally Car and co-driven by Enda Sherry, won the event last season – finishing 35 seconds ahead of Michael Barrable (Ford Focus WRC).
It’s highly unlikely that Keenan will register for Dunlop points as he defends his event title. Patrick Elliot, a dramatic tie-break winner in the Circuit of Kerry, will continue to drive his S11 Subaru, the Cavan man plans to have an S12B for the next round in Cavan. Elliott’s plan to gradually ease himself into the pace of the national series, was ratcheted up a few gears and he was delighted with top points in Kerry.
Although former triple champion Maguire is on home ground, he reckons there is no real advantage, neither does he feel he’s under any undue pressure. “The stages are new so it will be the same for everybody. Of course you would like to win your home event. Patrick (Elliott), Seamus (Leonard) and Michael (Barrable) will all go very hard, Michael did very well in Monaghan last year.” On the pace of the Dunlop series, he added, “The last stage in Kerry was unreal, there is no doubt in my mind that the pace is very quick. I never put a foot wrong on that last stage in Kerry but Patrick beat me by two seconds.”
His tie-break finish in Kerry was the third such occasion he found himself in that situation, previously, he lost out to Gabriel Snow (1999) while he got the verdict over Jim Harrison (2002).
Maynooth’s, Kevin Barrett picked up his first batch of Dunlop points in Kerry and will be eager to add to his tally in Monaghan. Glenn Allen, third in Monaghan last year, had no real answer to his rivals in Kerry but could be closer on this occasion. Monaghan’s, Adrian McElvaney (Subaru WRC), a former winner in Monaghan, plans another outing on his home event and will be determined to make amends for crashing out on the third stage some twelve months ago.
Michael Barrable’s first outing in the current Dunlop series yielded 14 points in Kerry, the Swords driver lost out on a tie break for third and was disappointed at his points haul. Both of the opening rounds were decided on the final stage and Barrable is acutely aware that he cannot lose ground, especially to either Elliott, Maguire or Leonard, who denied him third place in Kerry.
Leonard showed a fine turn of speed even though he reckoned his Subaru lacks the cutting edge technology of those of his rivals. There’s little doubt that he cannot be overlooked in the race for the Dunlop title. The all WRC top ten in Monaghan also includes the Subaru’s of Noel Redmond and PJ McDermott.
Elsewhere, Sean Gallagher (Subaru) is seeded at number eleven ahead of top Group N driver, Cavan born, Willie Fannin (Subaru). The race of the Patterson’s RallyNews Award has an unusual look at this stage of the season with Eamonn Daly and Danny McBride spearheading proceedings. Fannin, the inaugural champion, has amassed just four points and needs a strong score to bounce back into the equation.
Others amongst the top twenty are Frank Wray (Mitsubishi), who will compete in Class 8; Gary McPhillips (Escort), Maurice Moffett (Starlet) and Rodney Wilton (Escort); Joe McHugh (Escort Cosworth) and Eoin Doyle (Subaru WRC).
The Mitsubishi trio of Anthony O’Halloran, Eamonn Daly and Fergal Costelloe have all registered for Dunlop points this season. Other entries include Mac McKenna (Peugeot 205), Manus Kelly, Russell Woods. Paddy Boyle, Gerry Cassidy, Mick McQuaid, Raymond Drury, Brian Armstrong and Damien Gallagher all in Ford Escorts.
