A cold dry day greeted crews as they left Roscommon town for the first of eight stages of the Midlands Rally. The snow did not fall as feared and the stages were bone dry except the start of last stage. The Midlands was the third round of the National Junior Rally Championship and the first visit to the tarmac.

Limerick driver Conor Kelly was on his first tarmac rally but he shot into a lead of twenty seconds after three stages. The 2006 forestry junior champion was in scintillating form in his new Opel Corsa but sadly his engine expired on the way to first service. Honda power took over in the shape of Damien Mc Carthy (Cork) and Peter Wilson (Meath) and they provided a thrilling battle right to the finish. The Civic duo were never more than twelve seconds apart. Mc Carthy held his lead to the end and he won by just four seconds. Mc Carthy and Wilson finished an amazing eight and ninth overall in the main rally.

Also Civic mounted was Longford driver Bernard Mulvihill, who was third, ninety seconds adrift of Wilson. Mulvihill drove well and he was 3rd fastest overall on the last three stages. The first non Honda home was the Peugeot 106 of Vincent Mc Aree who finished fourth. John Byrnes was very relieved to finish fifth. The Limerick driver was leading rounds one and two when the he hit mechanical problems and he is now looking forward to the next round in Cork.

A major retirement was Patrick Cunningham, who was second overall (to Kelly) when the diff broke in his Civic. The Galwayman was winner of round two in Limerick Forestry. Jason Ryan was winner of round one. He no such luck in the Midlands as he endured a myriad of problems but the Corkman still netted a finish in his Honda Civic. Another disappointed driver was Killian Duffy in his new Citroen C2. The Mayoman made a steady start and then he speeded up to fourth overall. He retired on the last stage with a broken gearbox. Duffy is better known as a co-driver-he won the 2007 Irish National Rally Championship with Aaron Mc Hale.

Clearly delighted with his win was Damien Mc Carthy. He said “It was a very nice and enjoyable rally, while we were on dry roads. There was a shower of sleet before the start of the last stage and the road was very slippery. Now I have ten points to bring home to add to the six I got in Limerick. That will keep the score board ticking over”.

• Leaders
Stage 1-3 Conor Kelly (Opel Corsa).
Stages 4-8 Damien Mc Carthy (Honda Civic).

• Eighteen drivers registered for the National Junior Championship started in Roscommon, with ten finishing.

• Mark Sheahan leads the NJRC after three rounds with 26 points, Vincent Mc Aree is second with 20 and Eamon Power 16.

• Next round Cork Mini Stages Rally Sunday June 8th.

BURNS TURNS UP THE HEAT - 2008 IRISH 205 CHALLENGE.

Posted: April 7, 2008 10:29 PM

Shane Burns co driven by Sean Balfe came home winners of the Abbey Hotel Midlands stages rally held in Roscommon town.
Round two of the Irish 205 Challenge proved to be a difficult day for the eleven drivers that took to the start on a sunny but very changeable day in the Midlands. Fastest out of the blocks on the first stage was Ulton McGowan/ Niall Burns who went quickest by 2 seconds from Andrew Slattery/ Shaun Forde. Next up was Dj Browne/ Torloc O Reilly 4 seconds further back with a small gap to Sean Sharkey/ Dessie Sharkey, Shane Burns and Aidan Cooney/ Paddy Mc Donagh all separated by just 3 seconds. All looked good at this point with the top eight drivers covered by 20 seconds. Stage two saw the eventually winner Burns fastest from Browne by 8 seconds who now led by 1 second overall after early leader McGowan was given a suspect time 40 seconds slower than he recorded which would prove costly at the end of the day. First to hit trouble were Kenny and David English who hit the front corner of their car resulting in a electrical problem. Also in mechanical difficulties was Slattery who broke his gear linkage dropping a minute to the leader.

Stage three was run after service and Slattery went fastest by 4 seconds from McGowan with Browne a further 5 seconds down. Equal third fastest was Burns and Norman Dunne/ Bernard Mc Sweeney. Cooney would visit a ditch in here for 4 minutes but the biggest loss was round one winners Barry Mahon/ Mark Feely who rolled out near the end of stage three. Reports have it the car rolled at least five times at a very fast place.

Stage four saw Slattery quickest again as he tried to regain lost ground. Browne was second quickest with Cooney, Dunne, Burns and McGowan all just a second apart. Stage five was cancelled for the crews who had one stage left before service. At this point Browne led by 9 seconds from Burns with Dunne third a further 24 seconds back and McGowan and Slattery separated by 5 seconds in fourth and fifth.

Stage six would see Burns fastest from Sharkey but worse would come when Dunne had a huge accident at the same corner that claimed Mahon earlier. Both crew would suffer injuries and be removed to hospital but thankfully will make a full recovery. We wish them well. Browne was next on the scene and would lose over 30 seconds and his lead checking on his friends. Slattery punctured at the start of the stage and dropped 4 minutes.

With a somber mood in all camps following Dunnes accident , the remaining crews set off for the last two stages. McGowan went quickest by 2 seconds from Browne with Slattery, Burns and Sharkey separated by another 5 seconds. Browne reduced the gap even more to Burns on the last stage by a huge margin of 16 seconds but it was to no avail as Burns hung on to win his first challenge event by 5 seconds. Slattery and McGowan eased off on the stage and dropped a little time but no places.

The others crews taking part that also finished included Damien and Thomas McGuaran who made sure of a finish this time having rolled out at the start of round 1, got fifth place points after a steady drive in their rebuilt 205. New boys to the challenge on this event were Cork pair Richard Guerin co driven by Antoney Linnane who put in a very good drive despite this being their very first event ever and an ill handling car to come home in seventh place. Taking the final championship points in eight place were Kenny and David English who lost so much time earlier in the event with their off road excursion.

NJRC - Juniors take to the black stuff

Posted: April 1, 2008 9:40 AM

Limerick driver Mark Sheahan heads to the Midlands rally on Sunday next leading the National Junior Stages Rally (NJRC). After 2 rounds held on the forestry roads of Mitchelstown and Limerick, Sheahan driving a Peugeot 206 leads Eamon Power of Wexford by two points. Power drives a Peugeot 106 and he is also two points ahead of the Honda Civic of Patrick Cunningham from Galway.

A total of twenty drivers registered for the NJRC have entered the Midlands rally and it will be their first tarmac event of the championship.

The Midalnds rally is based in Roscommon town. Clerk of the Course Eoin Longworth has devised a compact route of 120 stage km’s. Rally HQ is the Abbey Hotel. First car is away at 10 am to compete on eight stages-four repeated. Service is at Roscommon race course after stages three and six. The rally is Round 2 of the Midlands East Championship and Round 2 of the Irish 205 Challenge and Round 3 of the National Junior Rally Championship.

The drivers registered for the NJRC are seeded in the main field, from 37 (Peter Wilson) to 100 (Kevin O’Connor). There is also an independent junior rally running at the end of the field with 14 entries.

It will be interesting to see who will be competitive on the Midlands. Will it be the forest racers or the tarmac specialists prevail? Will Mark Sheahan extend his championship lead, or can Jason Ryan (winner in Mitchelstown) or Patrick Cunningham (winner in Limerick) repeat their victories? What are the chances for local driver Bernard Mulvihill? Mulvihill won the Midlands Junior championship last year.

One way or another, the result will be known around 18.00 when the main field is due back at park ferme in the C.B.S. grounds.

Duffy Switches Seats For Irish Junior Rally Championship

Posted: April 1, 2008 9:38 AM

Killian Duffy has secured a deal to drive a brand new Citroen C2R2 in the Irish Junior Rally Championship. The C2R2 is been hired from Derrick Jobb Motorsport and will make its debut in Midland Stages Rally this weekend.
Killian, the current National Rally Champion Co-Driver alongside Aaron MacHale has plenty of experience in the co-driver seat. Killian’s experience of the driving seat however is limited, but he has contested the National Autocross Championship in his teenage years, and also competed in Mayo Stages Rally 2007 driving a 106cup car where he finished 2nd in class 6.

The Irish Junior Rally Championship was setup as a platform for young drivers to be selected for the Billy Coleman Award.
The Billy Coleman Award is a Scholarship with professional guidance and financial backing for the winning driver so that they can further their career with a view to a professional drive in the World Rally Championship in the future.
The Irish Junior Rally Championship is contested over 4 Tarmac rallies and 4 Gravel/Forest rallies so it gives the selection committee an indication of each drivers’ ability on both surfaces.

Killian knows the importance of a good co-driver, so he has enlisted Eamonn Walsh from Claremorris to partner him for the year. Eamonn has a lot of experience in the co-driving seat, so the experience of both competitors is sure to be an advantage.
There is of course a huge cost involved in contesting the Junior Rally Championship, but Killian and Eamonn have been lucky so far in securing the following sponsors for the year; Caden Refrigeration Crossmolina, AGS Scaffolding Crossmolina, www.treecare.ie, Hanley’s Bar Claremorris, Mark Walsh Flooring Claremorris, Mark Hyland Plastering & Labour Supply Claremorris, Supermacs Ballindine Ballinrobe & Claremorris, P. McHugh & Sons Builders Ballindine, and Kumho Tyres.
