Devon rally driver David Kynaston and his co-driver Andy Russell finally put the disaster of their 2007 season behind them and took victory of the 2008 Richard Egger MSA Asphalt championship on the final round held on the Otterburn Military Ranges in Northumberland.
The Cheviot Stages was the showdown finale, with 3 crews fighting to win the Championship. Kynaston and Russell's K-Rally Sport Audi A3 quattro only needed a finish to repeat their 2006 success, and it was down to Stephen Simpson (Hyundai Accent WRC) or Simon Mauger (Ford Escort) to maintain the pressure.
Simpson, first on the damp and greasy military roads of Otterburn hit the first cattle grid on stage one and left the stage, luckily staying upright but not able to rejoin, his day was over!
The real pressure was now on the Devon crew to maintain enough momentum and focus without losing concentration. "We are operating at 7/10ths which brings its own problems" said Kynaston.
Throughout the Day the Crew maintained a top 5 position, and with the Cheviot Hills taking a high level of attrition they were able to secure a podium finish securing their 2008 success.
A delighted Russell said "A great season for the K-Rally Sport team with a car that attracts a great deal of support throughout the UK. We now look forward to the Championship next year which has been improved to bring all of the classic Asphalt events around the UK and Ireland into its calendar".
The K-Rally Sport Team would like to thank all their sponsors:
