KELLEHERS SCALE THE WICKLOW HILLS
Clonakilty driver, Kevin Kelleher, recorded a convincing victory on the Germaine's of Baltinglass Mini Stages Rally in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9, finishing the event with an advantage of fourteen seconds over last year's winner, James Foley, who was also piloting an Evo 9. It was Kelleher who was beaten into second place by Foley in Wicklow twelve months ago, but on this occasion there seemed little doubt from the outset as to where the laurels would go on the Garda Siochana Motor Club's event.

Kelleher, navigated by his brother, Martin, was fastest on the opening stage, Askanagap, by nine seconds from Foley, with Tom Holton next fastest in his Toyota Celica, a further eleven seconds back. Kelleher extended his advantage over Foley on the next test, Kilcarney, by a further four seconds, while Holton in turn closed the gap to Foley by one second.

The same two stages were repeated after Service in Baltinglass. Kelleher gained an additional four seconds on stage three, and while Foley took two back on the fourth and final stage, Kelleher had done enough to take victory. "We had a good run, the car behaved flawlessly all day", said Kelleher of his Harper Rally Preparation tended Mitsubishi, the same car he had debuted on the Cork '20' International Rally earlier this month.

Kelleher's only previous outright victory came on the Carlow Mk2 Challenge in 2005.

Holton held onto third place throughout, mirroring his result on this event twelve months ago, while Tarmac Champion co-driver, Paul Kiely, whose abilities as a driver continue to impress, took fourth.

Trevor Mulligan was the top two-wheel drive finisher in fifth in his Escort. Local man, Trevor Culbert, was expected to be among the leaders in the 'Escort class', but he lost eighteen minutes on the third stage while he dealt with a dashboard fire. Having overcome this mishap, he then had an engine failure on the final stage, and had to coast the last half mile to the finish.

SLEATORAUTO Championship goes to the wire in Baltinglass.
Going into the final round of the SLEATORAUTO Midlands East Rally Championship it’s all to play for with 3 crews doing battle for the overall honours. Leading crew on 62 points are Galway’s Gabriel Hession & Chris Crowe in 1600cc Group N Honda Civic. In runner up position is Granard driver Patrick Higgins on 59 points. Patrick also drives a Honda Civic. 3rd placed driver is Oldcastle’s Thomas Boylan who drives an immaculate Peugeot 309. Runner Up Navigator is Anthony Hoey who navigates for Thomas Boylan and 3rd Overall navigator is Richard Mullen from Portarlington.

This Years championship is twinged with sadness following the death of Ian O’Flynn. IanO was the inspiration behind Eoin Longworth to get the Midlands East Championship of the ground following its earlier teething problems. In Ian’s memory a special perpetual cup will be awarded to Overall winning driver in the championship.

In the Classes Winston Whyte/Brian Dunne (MG Rover) have clinched Class 1, while Derek Sheeran/Stephen Cooney (Honda Civic) should win class 2 from Birr Crew Donald Powell/Robert Lewis. Timmy England (Honda Civic) has clinched Class 3 while Tom Gormley/Paul Horan (Evo 9) have taken Class 4 honours. Class 6 will go down to the last stage with Strokestown’s Marc McDermot/Dermot Flanagan and Galway’s Ger McDonagh/Kenneth Lee battling out for supremacy in their Honda Civic’s. Last years champions John Kelly/Robin Shaw are not doing as well this year and class 8 will also see a great battle with Paul McEnroe. Class 9 has been won the legendary Kingscourt crew of Tommy Martin/ Martin Kerley in the famous Fiat Uno while Mullingars John Masterson/Hazel White have taken class 9A honours in a Suzuki Swift. Tullamores Dermot McNeill (Peugeot 205) should take class 10 with some battle for 2nd and 3rd driver positions between Mike Garahy (Escort), Tony Dunne (Starlet), Sean Kelly (Nova) and Pether McDonald Escort). Class 10 navigators are between Aileen Garahy, Ivor Tremble & Pether Hagan. Honda Civic’s again dominate Class 11 with Navan’s Tommy Gardiner/Aisling Poynton and Mullingar’s George Bell/Tommy Curran in the hunt for class honours. Danny McCormack/Brian Smullen (Corsa) have clinched class 12 with the remaining class positions being pursued by Escort crews of Kieran Guinan/Alan Higgins, Larry & Anthony Brady along with Gene Callan/Sean Brunton. Class 13 with end up between Damien Hagan/Fintan McGorman (Escort) and the infamous Father and Son duo of John & Bernard (Barry) Devine in the Ford Sierra. Conor Magennis/Raymond Scullion have won class 14 in their immaculate BMW M3. Class 15 is still wide open with Billy O’Keefe/Derek O’Neill, Jimmy Brennan/Ger Kenny and Mark Courtney/Conor Foley all in the hunt.

The championship is class based so when dropped scores and bonus points for starting all rounds are added in, the championship tables make take on a different picture.
