McCarthy/ Morrissey Storm to Victory
John McCarthy/ Mickey Joe Morrissey (Corolla WRC) came from behind taking a slender two-second victory on the “Circuit of Wicklow” Forest Rally. The event was Round 3 of the “McCauley Trailers” National Forest Rally Championship based the “Garden of Ireland” Easter Sunday 16h April. Weather conditions were perfect as the 79 starters embarked on this revamped rally featuring all-new stages. The rally was condensed to six stages due to unforeseen circumstances. While this a major disappointment for the club everything worked out well, there was less road mileage, extra service time and the event finished earlier in the afternoon.

Stephen Moore/ Tony McHugh debuted their latest acquisition, an ‘02 spec Focus WRC. The Tyrone pair came to Wicklow holding a 12-point Championship lead and hoped to strengthen their resolve with the new machine.

Moore set the pace on the opening stage stopping the clocks on 8:03. Top seeds Kenny McKinstry/ Barry Goodman were the first retirement as their WRC Subaru lost power following a heavy landing midway through the very fast ss1 “Carrick Mountain”. Wildcards, No 13 Donie O’Sullivan/ Sean Mullally (Impreza WRC) and No 18 Brian McGillin/ David Doherty (N12) turned heads as they tied for second on 8:13.

John McCarthy/ MJ Morrissey and Trevor Harding/ Adrian Deasy (Impreza) tied in fourth with 8:14. Niall Driver/ Frank Corrigan (Evo 6) held 6th (8:17). Paul Staunton/ Bruce Burgess (mk2), Frank Kelly/ Liam Brennan (mk2), Owen Murphy/ Gary Nolan (Evo 5) and Kevin O’Kane/ Martin Brady (Impreza WRC) tied on 8:18 completing the top ten at first service near Rathdrum. Pat Norris/ Francis/ Kenny retired their WRC Subaru with gearbox troubles. Local crew Brian Lawlor/ Peter Kavanagh crashed at the flying finish, where many before them also had drama. Their Evo was well off the road and the crew were a bit stiff, thankfully there are no serious injuries to report.

The rally moved to unchartered territory for ss2 “Mucklagh” and ss3 “Ow River”. Moore’s lead was short lived as he left the road on Mucklagh; his Focus sustained very little damage but was now out of contention. Brian McGillin set FTD moving into a 3 sec lead from Donie O’Sullivan. John McCarthy held third, 7 secs adrift, while Harding retired due to a broken drive shaft. McGillin set the pace on the short snappy “Ow River” on 3:30. Pete McCullagh/ Alan Dolan (Evo 7) were second fastest on 3:34, McCarthy trailed by a sec with O’Sullivan a further 2 secs back. Frank Kelly was charging hard as ever, unfortunately for the third time in as many events he ran out of road taking to the bushes for 10 mins eliminating him out of the 2WD battle.

At the lunchtime service (nr Rathdrum) Brian McGillin held a 10 sec lead from Donie O’Sullivan. Both drivers were in good spirits, McGillin was delighted with his N12 while O’Sullivan was in awe of the fun he was having with the P2000 on the loose. John McCarthy completed the podium, 6 secs off O’Sullivan and 16 secs off the lead. The Cork man was having hydraulic problems; the centre diff locking up in his Corolla was hampering his progress. Kevin O’Kane showed a return to form, holding 4th – 9 secs off McCarthy. Pete McCullagh trailed by 4 secs, holding 5th overall. Niall Driver was only 2 secs down in 6th followed by Stuart Darcy/ John Kilmurray (Evo 7), Daniel Barry/ Mark Bowens (Evo 8), Owen Murphy (Evo 5) and Adrian Hetherington/ Terry Walkinshaw (mk2) completed the top ten and were leading the 2WD contingent, 5 secs up on local ace Paul Staunton.

After a repeat of “Carrick Mountain” which was shortened McGillin’s lead began to diminish as McCarthy piled on the pressure. Having sorted the diff trouble McCarthy attacked to set his first FTD stopping the clocks on 7:17, O’Sullivan 7:22, O’Kane and McCullagh 7:23 and McGillin 7:25. At the final service with two stages remaining victory was all to play for with only 8 seconds separating the top three. McGillin (26:55) led from O’Sullivan (27:02) while McCarthy (27:03) was third.

The penultimate stage, “Ow River” was a turning point leader McGillin stalled while John McCarthy set a blistering FTD, 22 secs up on his first attempt taking the lead. The 2WD battle had been very close with only 3 secs separating the rapid mk2’s of Staunton and Hetherington with Seamus O’Connell also in the hunt with his BDA. Staunton lost 20 secs due to a puncture leaving Hetherington secure in front with only the short final stage remaining.

Starting the final stage McCarthy held a three sec advantage over Donie O’Sullivan with Brian McGillin a further 4 secs back. McCarthy and O’Sullivan tied on 3:31 in their respective WRC’s while McGillin gave it his all stopping the clocks on 3:26 with his latest spec Gp N machine setting FTD to displace O’Sullivan from second. Daniel Barry equalled McCarthy and O’Sullivan on 3:31 with his Evo 8, with Stuart Darcy (Evo 7) well on the pace only 2 secs back. Adrian Hetherington bent a steering arm losing 12 secs (3:53) while Staunton tied with O’ Connell on 3:41.

John McCarthy/ MJ Morrissey clinched a narrow 2-sec victory. This is his first win in the Corolla having campaigned it for the last two years with various mishaps along the way. McCarthy/ Morrissey take the Championship lead on 39-points with Moore/ McHugh (Focus) three points in arrears. Long-time leader Brian McGillin finished a mere 2 secs adrift of McCarthy. This was a sensational drive the Omagh man was unlucky not to win; a costly stall denied him the honours. Nevertheless he kept his composure taking 5 secs off the WRC’s on the final stage when it was all to play for. Donie O’Sullivan was thrilled with third overall, one sec back on only his second gravel rally. This was purely a shakedown for the Rally of the Lakes, however the Kerry man enjoyed the woods so much that he promises a return.

Kevin O’Kane/ Martin Brady took fourth after a trouble-free run. Pete McCullagh/ Alan Dolan had their first result this season claiming fifth and the (class 8) Gp N spoils. McCullagh’s set very competitive times up there with the front-runners and did well to hold off his rivals. Owen Murphy/ Gary Nolan got the most out of their Evo 5, sixth overall and second in Gp N – 3 secs off McCullagh was no mean feat. Local young gun: Daniel Barry (Evo 8)with Mark Bowens on the notes were 7th overall, 2 secs back. Niall Driver/ Frank Corrigan (Evo 6) clinched 8th. 9th overall, Stuart Darcy/ John Kilmurray (Evo 7) featured in the Gp N battle throughout the day. This was Darcy’s first result on gravel and the former “Billy Coleman” award winner will be one to watch in the coming rounds.

Completing the top ten, Adrian Hetherington/ Terry Walkinshaw (mk2) took Best 2WD and class five honours with Seamus O’Connell/ Brian Duggan just outside the top ten 5 secs in arrears.

Mike O’Connor jnr/ Sinead O’Keeffe have been on the pace every day but have failed to finish. It was third time lucky for the pair finally making the finish (26th overall) landing the spoils in class one with their Suzuki- powered mk2. Michael Doyle/ John Brophy claimed class two honours for the second time in a row with their RWD 205. Joe McDonald/ Barry Hamilton wrapped up class 3 with their ex-works 106 Maxi. Ray Benskin/ Peadar Walsh (mk2) claimed class 4 as many of the hard chargers fell by the wayside. Douglas Stewart/ Billy Ryan (206) had a clear run to victory in class 7. Conor Kelly/ Denis Ryan (Nova) took the junior class by storm with a 47 sec victory on his first finish this season.

The event had a good quality entry including a handful of new entrants with Evo’s, lets hope they come again. Thankfully weather conditions were perfect, the new stages were well received by all and it was great to see the majority of competitors make the finishers list.

Murphy has trying day in Wicklow.
Cork teenager Owen Murphy went to Wicklow in the hope of putting his championship back on track and achieved that however it was not all sunshine in the Murphy camp.

Before the event the lads were happy with the car however on the morning of the rally suddenly the diff started to make some strange noises on and off .There was nothing for it at that stage only try our best to mind it and set some good times Owen said.

After stage one Owen was in the top five and happy enough , with a couple of stages cancelled the idea was the thing might hold together .However diff problems were back for stages 3 and 4 and picking too soft a compound of Yokohama did little to help .

Stage 5 and Owen was now back into the swing of things the diff problem seemed to have sorted itself and Owen was now back on the pace a choice of harder compound Yokohama making a mighty difference with stage 6 cancelled Owen was back mixing it with the WRC cars at the front on stage 7 and set an excellent time things were looking good and there was but one stage remaining .

The Yokohama shod car was now handling the way Owen wanted it to go but the diff was causing more worries and the car reverted to rear wheel drive only. there was nothing for it but drive it as hard as possible to the end as there were other GpN lads snapping at our heels .

Owen and Garry got the car to the finish 6th overall and second in GpN was a good result on a day where for a change the boys had a bit of luck.

Owen said after the rally it was a great event we had our problems but we drove around them there is no doubt we were lucky as I do not know could we have completed another stage however our championship is back on course and Garry once again did a great job on the notes and my service crew were fantastic .We came here to get some points and we achieved that I am also happy for my sponsors we have another finish and a good result.

Owen is supported by Yokohama Tyres, Mac Tyres Ireland ,O Flynn Construction, Nyhan Motors Mitsubishi Dealers Bandon, O Brien Crowley Accountants , Wolfrace Wheels,Permafrost and Carnet.ie not forgetting my service crew and all who helped us the weekend.

The totally revamped “Circuit of Wicklow Rally” returns to its original Wicklow Town base this Easter Sunday 16th April, hosting the third round of the 2006 “McCauley Trailers” National Forest Rally Championship. Organised by the MEC (Motor Enthusiasts’ Club) the event will run 8 new stages approx 50 stage miles over a loop of 4 locations repeated with centralised service in the Maintenance Depot, Avondale House, Rathdrum after stages 2, 4 and 6. The event is also the 3rd Round of the Triton Showers South East Stages Championship.

Top seed Kenny McKinstry (Impreza WRC) will leave the ceremonial start ramp from the “Grand Hotel” Wicklow at 09:30 o’clock Sunday Morning before the opening stage “Glenealy”. McKinstry is a surprise and welcome entry. Having taken the spoils on round 1 (Carrick Forest Rally) the Banbridge Ace is likely to set the pace for the “McCauley Trailers” championship regulars. However given the pedigree of entry he cannot afford to be complacent.

At number 2; John McCarthy (Corolla WRC) needs to rack up the points after the disappointment of retiring in Mitchelstown, nevertheless will want to race with McKinstry. At 3, Kevin O’Kane returns having missed the second round, his Impreza WRC back up to speed after a re-build. Pat Norris at 4 returns with his Impreza WRC, the Kildare man always a podium challenger. Number5; Limerick’s James Murphy has John Brennan on the notes. Murphy will be under pressure to make the start, as his Escort WRC is being re-fettled after engine failure on round 2.

Number 6; Stephen Moore/ Tony McHugh lead the Championship with a 12-point advantage. While Moore appears on the list in his N10 Impreza, he could appear in something a whole lot different - which will make the Championship very interesting. Owen Murphy/ Gary Nolan are at 7 with their Evo 5. Murphy needs points after his Mitchelstown non-finish, will he drive for the championship or will he take on the WRC’s?

Brian Lawlor/ Peter Kavanagh are top local seeds at 8. The Kilternan crew missed out on overall victory due to gearbox failure in Mitchelstown - could this be their day? The flamboyant Trevor J Harding ably assisted by Adrian Deasy is at 9 with his Gp A Impreza. If he decides to keep it tidy he can mix it with the rest. Pete McCullagh/ Alan Dolan (Evo 7) complete the top ten. McCullagh has been at the sharp end on the opening two rounds but has failed to finish.

Just outside the top ten; Pete Willoughby/ Greg McCarthy are out in the “DJ Rally Hire” Gp A Evo 7. Frank Kelly/ Liam Brennan are first 2WD on the road at 12 in their rapid mk2. Kelly has staggering speed but has no results so far this year.

Wildcards include, Donie O’Sullivan/ Sean Mullally (13) in an Impreza P2000 WRC. The popular Kerry man returns to the woods, which he enjoyed so much when he last competed on the Killarney Forest Rally in September’04. Brian McGillin/ David Doherty (18) launching their brand new N12 Impreza in the Wicklow Woods. McGillin featured with an older model Impreza last year and is sure to rattle the leader-board with this very latest spec Subaru.

Locals include; Paul Staunton/ Bruce Burges at 14 in their 2.0 16v Escort. Staunton will be spectacular as he slides through his home forests determined to displace Kelly for the “Best 2WD” honours. Niall Driver/ Frank Corrigan (Evo 6) at 15, Noel Driver/ Joe Shinnors (mk2) 21, Jason/ Patrick Roche (mk2) 29 and young guns with big plans are number 32 Daniel Barry/Mark Bowens (Evo 8) on a shakedown for the Evo Challenge.

Adrian Hetherington/ Terry Walkinshaw (mk2), Seamus O’Connell/ Brian Duggan (BDA), John Reid/ Enda Shields (mk2) and Olliver Williams/ Anthony Cronin (mk2) are some of the many contendors looking to shake up the Kelly/ Staunton battle for 2WD supremacy.

After Glenealy (ss1) the event heads to “Ballinagee” (ss2) followed by service in Rathdrum at 11:17. Next is “Owriver” (ss3) followed by “Muckla” (ss4) followed by the main lunchtime service. Back to Glenealy and Ballinagee with a final service in Rathdrum (15:35) before the closing stages, Owriver and Muckla. The first competing cars are due back at the finish ramp (Grand Hotel) 5:30 pm Sunday evening followed by results/ prizegiving at 8:30.

Owen goes the Wicklow Way.
Owen Murphy Rallying gets ready for the third round of the McCauley Trailers National Forest Rally Championship the Circuit of Wicklow Rally. With the disappointment of the last rally now but a fading memory the team are confident of a good finish in Wicklow.

Owen said my team have checked over the car and we are ready I do not know much about the event except it really rained in Wicklow last year. Whatever the weather we have a Yokohama tyre that is ready for the conditions !!!

I think that GpN will now be much more competitive and with a GpN car having won the last round it just shows that in the wood power is not everything a good reliable car is half the battle.

Wexfords Garry Nolan will again be on the notes and hopefully we can get a good result. When I heard Kenny McKinstry was doing it I thought maybe we could follow him around like we did in Carrick but I am sure many others have the same idea.

Owen is supported by Yokohama Tyres, Mac Tyres Ireland ,O Flynn Construction, Nyhan Motors Mitsubishi Dealers Bandon, O Brien Crowley Accountants , Wolfrace Wheels, Permafrost and Carnet.ie not forgetting my service crew and all who are helping the weekend.
