Round 1 - 2000 Ford Puma Championship

This all tarmac event based in Killarney, consisting of 180 of Irelands toughest stage miles, developed into a gigantic battle between the current Irish Ford Ka Champions Derek Daly and UK Ford KA Champions Simon Maugher.

Maugher caught the pre event favourite Daly napping taking the early advantage over the first loop. Daly responded magnificently using his local knowledge, to end day one sixteen seconds ahead of Maugher.

The battle recommenced on Day Two with Maugher again taking the advantage on Stage One putting Daly under pressure. Daly deciding to run without a spare wheel suffered a puncture on stage thirteen, damaging his front suspension in the process which put him out of contention. Despite suffering from gear selection problems on the final stage Maugher scored a decisive victory finishing in an amazing eighteenth position overall, amongst a quality field of WRC machinery.

."I am delighted to win it was really great fun, I was disappointed that Derek damaged his suspension as we were have a magnificent battle, Derek was really pushing me hard and I am looking forward to doing battle with him for the rest of the season. The Ford Puma is the best Rally Car I have ever driven and I think my result here today has proved the credentials of the Ford Puma beyond doubt" said Simon.

The 2000 Ford Puma Rally Championship is the first one make rally championship to use works specification identically prepared 1400 Ford Puma Kit Cars. The Ford Racing Puma Rally Championship is designed to promote young rallying talent and is part of the Ford Motor Company's stairway to success, that sees the Ford Motor Company providing young drivers with competitive rally machinery throughout the careers. The Rally of the Lakes was the first out of five events based in Ireland and the UK.
