Kerry Motor Club started the 2003 Munster motorsport season at Tralee racecourse on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th March with two exceptional autotest events as fitting finales to the Hewison national championship. A three way battle for the championship has raged since September last and the exceptional location, great course and superb organisation enhanced the showdown

DONNELLY STORMS TO VICTORY IN THE MAYO STAGES RALLY
Unsettled conditions greeted the 131 starters of last Sunday's Downhill House Hotel Mayo Stages, which opened the new season. Thankfully the roads dried out somewhat for the first cars on this years Mayo Stages Rally. Former Donegal International winner, James Cullen, was driving one of the O cars, in a Honda Civic, and he thought that the drivers who fitted slick tyres were brave and would score the fastest times. Eugene Donnelly overcame the conditions and the strong opposition to take the first major prize of the year.

After 5 rallies, 4 bank-holiday weekends, a top 3, a 2 wheel drive award and 1 great night for all the prize winners, the 2002 023 Tiles Southern 4 Rally Championship will certainly be remembered for a long time to come. Ollie O'Donovan & David Moynihan took the honours in a championship that went down to the wire.

The counting rounds for the 2003 championship remain the same as last year with the opening round being the West Cork Rally on 15-16 March.

John McCarthy won the 2003 Willie Loughman Memorial Carrick Forest Rally dominating from the start as he debuted the "ex Fisher Impreza". It was the first time this famous car was in the woods, John's first event in the car and it was also the first win for the East Cork pairing of John McCarthy and Dan Maguire

Kris Meeke made a remarkable impression on his Monte Carlo Rally debut.

Of the twenty-three Junior World Championship contenders, Kris set an impressive pace, with a fifth fastest time on SS1. A wrong tyre choice for the ice and snow on the next stage, dropped the Team Palmer Opel crew over one minute forty seconds to the leading S1600, Daniel Carlsson.
