IPS Packaging Southern 4 Rally Championship Round 5 preview

With the 2 opening internationals over and done with the IPS Packaging Southern 4 Rally Championship heads to the sunny south east for the first of the one day rounds for 2023. The Ravens Rock Rally promises the traditional fast and flowing roads along with some stiff local competition and a hearty welcome to all.

Heading for home ground Eddie Doherty with Killian McArdle on the notes will hope they can stretch their overall lead in the championship with the Escort holding a commanding 10 point lead over fellow class 14 man Mark Dolphin who moves into 2nd overall after a consistently strong showing this year. The early leader from West Cork, Cal McCarthy lost ground after a fraught Rally of the Lakes where the Citroen C3 never fully got going right with a small niggle in the car forcing it to lose power at times. A 3rd place overall is still a good place to be in at the halfway stage of the season.

Fiesta equipped Keith Lyons would make a big push over the Rally of the Lakes weekend to bag 4th and 3rd place points consecutively to bring himself right back into the championship hunt in 4th place after a no points result in round 2 in West Cork.

He sits ahead of Aaron Brown who had a troubled day on Round 3 on the Saturday stages on the Beara Peninsula before netting a good points haul on the Sunday to pip Welshman Huw Jefferies on a tie break.

One man who will be watched closely by competitor and spectators alike will be Kevin Flanagan who currently leads class 9 in the battle of the pocket rockets as he wows the crowds with his demonstrations of car control in the little Mini. Kevin will hope to be able to extend his lead in the class in Ravens Rock

For the navigators it is Eric Calnan who still leads the way from Motorsport Ireland Academy member Ronan Comerford by 3 points with Avarina Jefferies making up the podium in 3rd place.

In the race for the Historic crown Duncan Williams now takes a commanding lead in the championship after he made the trip to Kerry. In the navigators race Guy Weaver still maintains his lead from Anthony O’Sullivan after his event came to an end on the Sunday whilst navigating for Phil Rogers. 3rd place in the championship now lies with Grace Walsh after a good points haul on Saturday but a non finish on Sunday.

In the Juniors it would be a repeat performance from our round 1 winners Darragh O’Donovan and Michael White as they would once again guide their Honda Civic round the stages to a comprehensive win even though they lost the final 2 stages. Robbie O’Hanlon and Oisin Joyce would put in a great performance on stages they could see this time round with the horrors of West Corks misted windscreen put firmly behind them they would finish in 2nd place ahead of Kyle Browne with Daniel Hanratty who would round off the podium moving them to 4th place points in the championship. Barry McIntyre and Conor O’Connell would secure 4th place points allowing them to hold onto 3rd place in the championship after the opening 2 rounds.

The winning Junior Driver is in line to win vouchers to the value of Free Event Entries for the whole of the 2024 IPS Packaging Southern 4 Rally Championship, so it’s an incredible incentive for the future stars of Irish Rallying.

So once again another highly entertaining weekend lied ahead for the crews as they face into the Ravens Rock Rally. Round 5 of the IPS Packaging Southern 4 Rally Championship 2023.
