Preview of Round 5 of 2022 Southern 4 Rally Championship

2022 has all the appearance already of being a bumper year for Irish Rallying, and that is more than the case for the IPS Packaging Southern 4 Rally Championship, with record numbers of competitors signed up, an exciting new title sponsor and a trio of fantastic new events joining this year’s calendar.

A long-term supporter of the Southern 4 Championship, Sean O’Carroll from IPS Packaging has launched a new era for the series with renewed title sponsorship and a new identity for the Championship, so make sure to look out for the shiny new IPS Packaging Southern 4 Rally Championship signage out on the stages this weekend!

2022 has also seen the introduction of a rotation scheme for events on the calendar, with the Southern 4 Championship making a first visit to the Circuit of Munster this weekend, the Stonethrowers Rally (July 17th) and the Kerry Winter Stages (October 30th). We are delighted to work with these brilliant clubs and events, as well as retaining of the support of teams behind the Imokilly Mini-Stages, the Ravens Rock and the Fastnet Rally.

In traditional Southern 4 style, the 2022 season kicked off with the West Cork Rally on March 19th & 20th, with both days counting as scoring rounds of the Championship. A second double-header battle was raged in Killarney over the May weekend, while the Cork ’20 (July 30/31) will also count as a double round of the championship.

Kicking off with the world-renowned blast over the high-speed Ardfield stage, Round 1 of the 2022 season was a true high speed battle over eight tests. With 106 competitors registered this year, the battles across all Groups already taking shape for the year ahead. At the head of the field, it would be a ding-dong battle between Callum Devine and Josh Moffett all day, with Devine taking the win by just 4 seconds and claiming maximum points ahead of Moffett. 2019 contender Daniel Cronin came 3rd.

The overall championship leaderboard changed on Round 2 with the demise of Callum Devine’s charge due to Gearbox issues, leaving the door open for Josh Moffett to claim a maximum score. He led home Merion Evans and Daniel Cronin.

After the first four points scoring opportunities, the class battles right throughout the IPS Packaging Southern 4 Rally Championship are really taking shape, Group 3 is led by Cyril Casey ahead of Pa O’mahony. Aidan Jackson leads the Group 4 standings, while Shane Casey has jumped ahead of Brian Doherty by a single point to lead Group 5. Raymond O’Neill has bumped up past Bob Moran to hold a slender lead in Group 6, while 2019 Champions David Guest & championship debutant Callum Devine share the lead of Group 7. Groups 8 and 9 are led by Andy Heekan & Sara McFadden as well as Sean Moran & Sarah Hennessy, while its Kevin Eves and Chris Melly that sit atop the table in Group 10.

A few short weeks later, it was the high-speed lanes east of Killarney and blistering sunshine that ushered in Round 3 of the 2022 Championship. After a tight battle in West Cork, the duo of Callum Devine and Josh Moffett led from the very front, sharing tenths of seconds over the stages. At the end of the day, it was Devine who took the Round 3 win by 7.5 seconds from the Monaghan man, while Merion Evans once more claimed a fine third.

Sunday morning, and the prospect of a blast over Molls Gap at dawn is a peak point in the Championship season. Once more, it would see a repeat of the round 3 results, with Devine with a much larger advantage leading home Moffett and Evans, but championship regular Daniel Cronin showed promising pace and came home 4th once more.

In the Historic Section, Neil Williams and Fergus O’Meara have made a strong start to the Championship, both now having claimed maximum points to leave just a 3 points difference between the pair, with Peadar Walsh now up to third.

The battle for the Southern 4 Championship Junior Prize Fund kicked off with a bang, with Killarney’s Jason Farrell taking the win from Robbie O’Hanlon and Ronan Lacey in West Cork, and ahead of O’Hanlon and Gary Healy in Killarney. The winning Junior Driver is in line to win vouchers to the value of Free Event Entries for the whole of the 2023 IPS Packaging Southern 4 Rally Championship, so it’s an incredible incentive for the future stars of Irish Rallying.

In the Navigator battle, Andy Hayes tops the table, with a 7-point gap ahead of Jonathon Jackson and Shane Buckley. This weekend sees the Southern 4 crews do battle once more on Round 5 in new terrain that we are excited to experience, and if the start of the season is anything to go by, its set to be an absolute cracker.

Triton Showers-backed Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship - Circuit of Munster Rally Preview

The Triton Showers-backed Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship enters the second half of its eight round season on Sunday’s Rathkeale based Lyons of Limerick Circuit of Munster Rally. The nine stage event has attracted a capacity entry (150 crews) with almost fifty other crews waiting on a reserve list.

Winners of the 2019 event, Monaghan’s Josh Moffett (Hyundai i20 R5) and his Wexford co-driver Andy Hayes are the top seeds with Moffett very much in command of the current series and favourite to land the title he won in 2019. On all but one of the four rounds this season, Moffett has Limerick’s Keith Moriarty as his co-driver, while the Abbeyfeale man read pacenotes for Moffett’s older brother, Sam on the Monaghan Rally. On the 2017 Circuit of Munster Rally, he partnered Sam to victory and will again partner Sam on Sunday’s event. The Moffett sibling rivalry is a regular feature of Irish rallying over the past few years and its most recent encounter was on round three in Monaghan with Josh taking the laurels - twelve seconds ahead of Sam.

Abbeyfeale co-driver Moriarty, who began competing some 22 years ago, is in the perfect position to judge the quality of both Moffett brothers.
“They have a great rivalry and when they are both on form, I can’t see anyone else get near them. Actually, they drive each other on.” While Moriarty has won several events with both he has also won the Circuit of Munster with Welsh driver Steve Wood (Subaru WRC) in 2016. However, he has yet to win a national title but with Andy Hayes not registering for the series, he should remain on course to secure a maiden national title.

Meanwhile, Tyrone’s Cathan McCourt (Citroen C3) will add an interesting dimension to the event, he was on course to win the recent Maiden City M.C. rally only to spin at the final junction of the very last stage and he lost out by 2.3 seconds.

Former triple national champion Donegal’s Declan Boyle has yet to decide which car to drive - either his VW Polo GTi R5 or his Ford Fiesta WRC, he hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons and trails Josh Moffett by 46 points. Meanwhile, Dubliner Robert Barrable will continue with the Ford Fiesta Rally2 he campaigned to fourth place on the last round in Carlow, his championship bid hasn’t materialised to match the form he showed on the opening round in Mayo.

Fermanagh’s Garry Jennings, in his right hand drive Fiesta R5, is utilising the event as a shakedown for the forthcoming Donegal International Rally. Elsewhere and having skipped the last round, Omagh’s Seamus Leonard (Fiesta R5) returns to the national fray along with Donegal’s Eamonn Kelly, who will have his second outing in the VW Polo GTi R5 normally driven by his father Donagh, on his debut in the car last March, he was fifth in the Mayo Rally. The top ten is completed by former national champion Meath’s Tim McNulty (Ford Fiesta R5) and Maynooth’s Paul Barrett (Ford Fiesta R5), the latter is still on a confidence building exercise after the opening round where he crashed out of fourth spot on the penultimate stage, since then, seventh in Monaghan remains his best result.

Outside the top ten, the likes of Cavan’s Stephen McCann and Limerick’s Keith Lyons, both in Ford Fiesta R5’s will be aiming to secure top ten finishes.
Kilcornan’s Ed O’Callaghan (Ford Escort) is the highest seeded two-wheel drive exponent, he leads the National Mk. 2 Trophy and will be aiming to extend his eight points advantage over Longford’s Stephen Faughnan, also in a Ford Escort.
In terms of the two-wheel drive category, he faces Armagh’s Jason Black (Toyota Starlet), who is in a rich vein of form and holds fourth overall in the Triton Showers-backed series.
Series regular Monaghan’s Michael Carbin (Mitsubishi EvoVIII) is also on the entry list that marks the return of former national champion Dubliner Aaron MacHale to competitive action after a lapse of over three years, he will debut a right hand drive VW Polo GTi R5.
Tyrone’s Gareth Sayers and Down’s Stuart Biggerstaff, both in Ford Fiesta R5’s and Cavan’s Jonathan Pringle (Ford Escort) complete the top twenty. Other entries include Limerick’s Chris O'Callaghan (Ford Escort), Donegal’s PJ McDermott and Cork’s Kevin Kelleher, both in Ford Fiesta R5’s. Dubliner Gareth MacHale, in a right hand drive VW Polo GTi R5, is fifth on the reserve list.

Rally Fever Returns to Rathkeale

Limerick Motor Club is delighted to announce the return of the June Bank Holiday Rally Buzz with The 2022 Circuit of Munster Rally returning on the 5th June to the town of Rathkeale Co Limerick! After a two year layoff at the hands of the world wide pandemic, LMC in proud association with Lyons of Limerick, Rathkeale House Hotel and The West Limerick Green Way are putting the final touches to the organising of their sensational Stage Rally.

The 2022 Lyons of Limerick Circuit of Munster Rally in association with The Rathkeale House Hotel will be hosted out of the hotel in the heart of Rathkeale. The Rathkeale House Hotel will be at the centre of this year’s event, providing one location for not only document scrutiny but also mechanical scrutiny. Competitors have only a short distance within the boundary of the town to both Parc Ferme and Sundays Service Area.

The stages start Sunday morning only a short road section from the town with a 3x3 format providing a magic mix of 110 stage kms which will challenge even the most seasoned competitors.

We would like to warmly welcome the 4 Championships who are joining us at the event - The MIRC National Rally Championship, The Top Part West Coast Championship, The IPS Southern 4 Championship and The MI Junior Rally Series.
