'GOATS' ATTRACT ATTENTION ON DONEGAL RALLY STAGES.

A once in a lifetime gathering of the greatest drivers in Irish rally history will take place this coming Sunday 19th June at Rosapenna in Downings, County Donegal. The 'Greatest Of All Time' will take on two of the classic stages as part of the celebrations for the 50th Anniversary running of the Joule Donegal International Rally Ireland.

Between them, they have amassed over 100 rally victories, a World Rally Championship, Irish and British rally titles, four Paris-Dakar wins, the Pikes Peak Hillclimb and . What they have in common is a shared history of winning the fabled Joule Donegal International rally.

Led by Ari Vatanen, a World Rally champion and veteran of 100 WRC rallies, who won Donegal in 1978, the very special field includes Irish legends Billy Coleman, who won it four times, Cathal Curley who has three, Austin McHale with two and Andrew Nesbitt, who holds the record with five victories on Irelands premier International rally. Two-time winners John Lyons and James Cullen will also star, as will Vincent Bonner who took his famous first home win for Donegal on the event back in 1983.

On show will be a few famous Ford Escorts, which between them have won 20 of the 50 Donegal Rallies. One such famous car was that driven by Ari Vatanen, The Black Beauty Escort. The replica shown at Knockalla, is liveried in the old Vatanen colours.

The stars will drive in a demonstration run over the High Glen and Atlantic Drive stages and in many cases will be driving their original rally cars, painstakingly restored and maintained by multiple Irish Rally champion Donagh Kelly, who is coordinating the event and will himself be driving the winning Subaru S12 rally car that won the event with the late Manus Kelly driving in 2018. A full list of cars and drivers will be available shortly.

The cars will convene at the Rosapenna Hotel in Downings at 9.00 on Sunday and the drivers will be available to meet with rally fans and sign autographs on posters especially designed to mark the occasion, and which will surely form part of any rally collectors treasure trove in the years ahead.

The non- competitive drive on the two classic stages will take place behind the main competitive field on Sunday after 1 pm at High Glen and the cars will then complete Atlantic Drive before a finish ceremony back at the Rosapenna Hotel, the HQ for the first ever Donegal Rally.

The Goats promise not to damage the grass, and all rally fans are welcome to meet and be part of this truly historic gathering.

The hills are calling as Irish Tarmac heads for Donegal

After three years of waiting, the Donegal International Rally is almost upon us. Three days and 300 stage kilometres lie ahead of an incredible list of Acesigns Irish Tarmac Rally Championship competitors.
Donegal’s 200-plus entered crews hint at the spectacle on offer across the 20 competitive stages.

Josh Moffett and Andy Hayes remain the crew to chase at the head of the Acesigns Irish Tarmac Rally Championship standings. Moffett leads ITRC by 21 points over Callum Devine after racking up two wins and two runner-up finishes in the first four rounds of 2022. However, ITRC's policy of crews dropping their two lowest scores would reduce that gap to five points.
Alastair Fisher and Gordon Noble will also benefit from dropped scores. They have shown a renewed turn of pace since the Circuit of Ireland, sealing their second international win on the Ballymena based event.
It looked like Fisher would go two from two in Killarney but a slide into the Kerry bocage on his final stage shootout with Devine instead had him leave Kerry with his first non-finish of the year.
Moffett, Devine, and Fisher have really upped the ante on recent Irish Tarmac rounds. While ITRC remains their main priority in 2022, a maiden Donegal win would be hard to resist should they find themselves in the mix.
Moffett failed to challenge for a win in Killarney but his assured drive through the barren mountain passes was rewarded with a runner-up finish.
The 2018 Irish Tarmac Champion has cruised to two national rally victories since and is showing no signs of slipping up on his double campaign this year.
Cathan McCourt, Meirion Evans, and Jonny Greer complete Donegal's leading ITRC contenders. All three drivers have shown they have the ability to set stage-winning times in international rallies this year.
The Citroen and Volkswagen pilots head what is a very strong second half Donegal Rally top ten.

Josh Moffett’s brother Sam is back to defend his 2019 Donegal Rally win but this year’s number one seed is out of ITRC running as he drives a World Rally Car specification Ford Fiesta.
The Acesigns Irish Tarmac Rally Championship welcomes back Garry Jennings and Rory Kennedy to the series after missing the past three rounds. The multiple Donegal winners scored a solid fourth-place finish on the season-opening Galway International Rally. They’ve been enjoying getting more asphalt experience in the right-hand-drive Ford Fiesta R5 and will attract plenty of interest in Donegal.
Leading Rally4 crew Eamonn Kelly and Conor Mohan step up into the leading class on Kelly’s home rally, manning a Volkswagen Polo R5 for the third time this year.
Another young local hoping for a good run in Donegal is David Kelly. He’s seeded 17th in his Fiesta R5 after battling through a variety of issues on the three ITRC appearances he has made so far.
Jason Mitchell, Stuart Biggerstaff, and Colin O’Rourke are just some of the other Rally2 drivers ready to tackle the best Donegal has to offer this weekend.

Modified
The Acesigns Irish Modified Tarmac Rally Championship’s four winners from its four events so far this year are all heading for the hills this week. Gary Kiernan, James Stafford, Daniel McKenna, and Kevin Eves will face stiff opposition to claim the coveted National Rally crown in Donegal this year.
McKenna is currently tied with Simon Reid on 31 points at the top of ITRC’s modified standings. Reid is gunning for glory in Donegal along with ITRC’s fourth, fifth, and sixth-place drivers Colin Byrne, Gareth Black, and Conor Murphy.
Stafford sits third in the modified standings having set the pace in West Cork and Killarney before his Darrian cried enough on the latter.
Kiernan and Eves lie down at the bottom of modified’s top ten but with 17 points to their names, a couple of strong results would put them right back in the mix with the leaders who only have 14 more points.

Historic
If you want an enticing series to follow, look no further than this year’s battle for the Historic Irish Tarmac title. Luke McCarthy and Brian Duggan currently lead the drivers’ and co-drivers’ standings with 53 points.
McCarthy will miss the presence of his two nearest rivals in the championship as Maurice Meskell and Neil Williams opt out of Donegal. Two points is all that separates ITRC’s top three historic drivers.
Fourth, fifth, and sixth-placed drivers Craig MacWilliam, Berian Richards, and Duncan Williams all head to Donegal within striking distance of championship leader McCarthy.
With three rounds left, this championship is all to play for.

Junior
Over 20 junior crews will tackle Donegal’s six stages on Sunday’s final day of action. Killarney’s Jason Farrell leads the standings by eight points over Ryan MacHugh. MacHugh and co-driver Declan Boyle will be hoping to assert some power into their Donegal assault, it is after all their home international event of the year.
Robbie O’Hanlon and Liam Egan remain in the Junior title race in their Honda Civic although a big score in Donegal is a must if they wish to catch leader Farrell.

The Donegal International Rally kicks off with a Thursday evening ceremonial start in Letterkenny before six stages on Friday, eight stages on Saturday, and a final six on Sunday.

We have said it before and no doubt we will say it again, Donegal has a special place in the hearts of competitors across Ireland and beyond.

Over the past 50 years we have seen some of the best drivers in the world grace our stages, a young Finn came here in 1975 to learn his trade by 1978 he returned and won the rally, three years later he won the world rally championship, that Finn was Ari Vatanen! In 2006 the 1995 world champion Colin McRae came here for a weekend and mesmerised us with his skills behind the wheel of an ageing Metro 6R4. In 2007 we saw the then world champ and his all-conquering team, Sebastien Loeb and Citroen Racing, arrived in Letterkenny to compete with the best our guys had to offer, initial struggles the team took the lead, and there was no turning back! In 2019 Craig Breen and Paul Nagle were on an enforced sabbatical from the WRC, finishing second and have vowed to return in the future to claim the coveted crown of ‘King of the Hills’.

This doesn’t distract from the home-grown heroes who have given us some of the most unreal battles seen on the stages anywhere in the world. Anyone that witnessed Coleman’s comeback drive in 1985 still talks about the sight of a Porsche 911 driven to the limit, Manus Kelly nipping ahead on the final stage in 2016, and the pure joy as Vincent Bonner slide his MKII Escort through the street of Letterkenny to claim the win in 1983. Andrew Nesbitt set the fastest times on every stage in 2000 in his Subaru WRC.

All these amazing feats showcased the fantastic roads of Donegal, from Malin Head, the Fanad Peninsula, the Atlantic Drive or the streets of towns like Ramelton, Buncrana or Bundoran we have been blessed with some skilled organisers who have facilitated these great events but more than that we have the people of Donegal who right from the start have taken the rally to their hearts and made it a place that everyone is welcome.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the Donegal International Rally and even though the rally has become the benchmark of Irish Rallying it is still very much a community-based event. The team behind the event still are routed in the Donegal tradition and still extends the warm welcome to competitors from across the globe. This year we are delighted to welcome competitors from Ireland, the UK, Europe, Australia and beyond.

This year the Joule Donegal International Rally is round five of the Ace Signs Irish Tarmac Championship and all the main protagonists are making the trip to Donegal to try and claim the championship crown.

As always with Donegal there are a few wild cards thrown in, Sam Moffett has stepped back from full-time competition but the urge to retain his 2019 crown has proved too strong. Triple British Champion Matt Edwards wants to wrestle the trophy from his grasp. Will one of the Championship regulars grab the honours, names like Fisher, Devine, Josh Moffett, Evans, and Greer need no introduction to rally fans.

There are many rallies within the rally, the one that is one of the more anticipated is the modified category. The scene is set for an epic battle. The crews in these machines are determined to claim the laurels.

The 161 entries will leave Letterkenny on Friday the 17th of June to tackle 20 stages. Will be challenged and enthraled in equal measure. The classic stages are mixed with fresh challenges, all this adds up to over 300kms of some of the best stages in the land.

The Historic crews will join the event on Saturday and will complete the Saturday and Sunday Stages, and on Sunday the Junior crews will tackle the remaining 6 stages.

Press Release 1 - The Joule continues to shine

The Donegal International Rally returns for its 50th anniversary this June, and what an event it will be! This year the rally will take place from the 17th to the 19th of June.

Joule is returning as the main sponsor of the rally and once again the organisers have laid on three days of some of the most demanding stages to be found anywhere across Europe. Donegal Motor club chairman Brian Brogan is looking forward to welcoming competitors and fans alike, ‘the rally is an integral part of Donegal tourism, it brings a minimum of 25 million euros to the local economy, already every hotel and bed and breakfast in the county is full. This rally sets the standard that other rallies across the country aspire to, that is down to the team involved but also, the warm welcome extended by the local community.

Ian Barrett MD of Joule was quoted 'As a business, we are delighted to be involved with the Donegal International Rally again. It is an ideal vehicle to promote our brand to a wider audience. The rally is internationally renowned, and having the Joule name has been a major benefit to us over the years'.

Eamon McGee is again the Clerk of the Course and is naturally looking forward to the event. Eamon has a small dedicated team working feverishly behind the scenes to bring together the largest sporting event outside Dublin. Donegal is round five of the Tarmac Championship and a round of the European Rally Trophy. Eamon was eager to explain what is in store for the competitors; ‘This year sees a mix of classic stages and some stages that have been tweaked and improved since last being used. McGee continued, this year we are starting 161 cars in the main field plus up to 25 historic entries and 25 junior competitors. Entries opened on Thursday the 11th of May and close on Thursday the 25th of May. The main field will enjoy twenty stages giving them over 300 competitive kilometres over the three days.

It looks as if the rally will once again run maximum numbers in each category, proving once again that Donegal has it all!
