West Cork attracts bustling Irish Tarmac entry
Posted: March 11, 2022 10:28 AM
The Acesigns Irish Tarmac Rally Championship travels to the ever-popular West Cork Rally for its second round of 2022. A fully booked entry of 200 cars is West Cork’s reward for putting on a two-day international rally that is always savoured by crews, spectators, and locals alike.
West Cork’s 14 stages over Saint Patrick’s weekend include favourites Ardfield, Ring, and Sam’s Cross.
Josh Moffett and Andy Hayes will be hoping to continue their impressive form so far this year. The Galway International Rally winners are seeded second in West Cork as they bid for their and Hyundai’s first win in Clonakilty.
Moffett’s i20 R5 will follow Alastair Fisher and Gordon Noble’s Volkswagen Polo R5 down West Cork’s opening Ardfield test. The Fermanagh-Tyrone crew had a tough start to their latest Irish Tarmac campaign. A puncture and collision with a bank on Galway’s final day of action meant they left round one seventh in the championship standings.
Fisher was Craig Breen’s nearest challenger in West Cork three years ago, the event hasn’t run since 2019, and the Polo pilot will be hoping to reinvigorate his championship challenge with that form.
West Cork’s top three seeds are completed by Galway’s third-place finisher Callum Devine. The Ford Fiesta Rally2 driver will be joined by co-driver Shane Byrne for the first time.
Galway runner-up Meirion Evans cannot be ruled out as a West Cork contender. His pace on round one was recognised by many as he and Jonathan Jackson took the fight to Moffett in typically Irish conditions.
Top-five challengers in Galway; Garry Jennings, Cathan McCourt, and Daniel Cronin all continue their campaign in West Cork. They’ll be joined by Jonathan Greer who gives the Citroen C3 Rally2 its Irish Tarmac Rally Championship debut and Owen Murphy who brings his R5 Fiesta to the Saint Patrick’s Day party.
Rally4
After a debut R5 drive earlier this month, Eamonn Kelly and Conor Mohan will hope to bounce back from their DNF in Galway’s Rally4 category. They lead the RC4 entries in West Cork ahead of Galway’s class winner Ryan Caldwell and runner-up Joseph Kelly.
James Boland, Jason O’Rourke, and Aoife Raftery round out the competitive category.
Modified
Gary Kiernan and Darren O’Brien came out on top of Galway’s gruelling opening round. They’ll welcome the challenge of Kevin Eves and Chris Melly in their repaired Toyota Corolla after its argument with a stone pier in Galway.
Jason Black and Karl Egan finished a remarkable second in Galway’s modified section despite having to change a puncture mid-stage on the opening day. Their impressive performances have encouraged the young Toyota Starlet crew to make its West Cork Rally debut.
Talented Killarney driver, Robert Duggan will provide a new threat in the modified battle which has a plethora of potential winners including Galway non-finishers Daniel McKenna, Declan Gallagher, and Chris Armstrong.
2019 Irish Tarmac Modified champion Damian Toner finished second to Mikko Hirvonen in West Cork three years ago. The Armagh driver will have to be at his best to go one better this year.
Historic
West Cork’s Historic battle may very well go down in history as no less than 25 crews tackle the south coast event. West Cork is the Historic’s third round of the Acesigns Irish Tarmac Rally Championship. Honours have been split between Neil and Duncan Williams so far with both drivers entered for West Cork.
Two top-three points finishes for Maurice and Steve Meskell put the Ford Escort Mk1 crew second and first respectively in the drivers’ and co-drivers’ standings, four points ahead of Luke McCarthy and Brian Duggan.
Ray Breen returns to the championship in his repaired Subaru Legacy with Italy’s Tamara Molinaro reading his pacenotes.
Junior
13 Junior crews have entered the West Cork Rally, with all but one crew in Honda Civics. The Class 16 Juniors will do battle across West Cork’s six stages on Sunday. Jason Farrell, John Michael Kennelly, and Robbie O’Hanlon continue in the Irish Tarmac Championship after completing the junior championship’s podium positions in Galway.
Press Release: Bumper Entry for 2022 West Cork Rally
Posted: March 9, 2022 10:23 AM
With only 10 days to go until the fast and flowing roads of West Cork come alive with the returning high-speed excitement of the Clonakilty Park Hotel West Cork Rally, Cork Motor Club are delighted to present this years Seeded Entry List, itself absolutely chock full of the finest Rallying Machinery and Talent & with tantalizing class battles in store right throughout the entry.
Leading the field away on Saturday morning will be Alistair Fisher & Gordon Noble in their VW Polo GTi R5, the pair return to West Cork having finished runners up in 2019, but hot on their heels will be an incredible seventeen R5 or Rally 2 cars. Josh Moffett & Andy Hayes, fresh from victories in Galway & Mayo, start at number two in their Hyundai i20 R5.
Callum Devine & Shane Byrne (Ford Fiesta R5) are seeded third, while Merion Evan & Jonathan Jackson (VW Polo GTi R5) and Cathan McCourt & Liam Moynihan (Ford Fiesta Rally 2) round out the top 5.
Amongst the leading crews is significant Cork Motor Club interest, with Owen Murphy & Anthony Nestor as well as David Guest & Jonathan McGrath both within the Top 10 behind the wheel of Ford Fiesta R5’s. There is plenty more local interest amongst the star-studded seeded list, with Cal McCarthy & Derek O’Brien (Clonakilty) in a Citroen DS3 R5, Jason McSweeney & Liam Brennan (Dunmanway) in a Ford Fiesta R5 and Kevin Kelleher & William Lynch (Clonakilty) in the Subaru Impreza S14 WRC.
If the battle for overall honors is sure to be a classic, the outcome of the Modified crown is mouthwatering such is the quality and quantity of the finest 2WD rally drivers in the country. Gary Kiernan & Daren O’Brien lead the field at number 20, but the Cavan man’s Ford Escort Mk2 is closely followed by a string of fellow Class 14 crews all vying for the Title.
Kevin Eves & Chris Melley (Toyota Corolla) as well as Daniel McKenna & Andrew Grennan (Ford Escort Mk2) both led at time in Galway but left there with no points so will be pushing to kickstart their Irish Tarmac Rally Championship campaign, while former Junior National Champions Jason Black & Karl Egan (Toyota Starlet) and Rob Duggan & John Falvey (Ford Escort Mk2) are definitely looking to continue the form they’ve shown on recent events.
The West Cork Rally has always attracted a strong overseas entry, and 2022 is no different as a large number of Welsh, English, Scottish and Isle of Man crews will descend on Clonakilty for St. Patrick’s Weekend. Amongst them, John Dalton & Gwynfor Jones in their incredible Darrian T90 GTR are the highest seeded, but the West Cork welcome is sure to be enjoyed by all our visiting competitors.
While the Main Field is brimmed full of incredible battles for every class, the 2022 West Cork Historic Rally is going to be an absolute feast for the senses. Starting on Stage 5 on Saturday afternoon, a bumper 26 cars are entered, with 2019 Historic Winners Neill Williams & Anthony O’Sullivan (Ford Escort Mk2) top of the seedings. In similar Fords are Duncan Williams & Guy Weaver, the ITRC Historic leaders after Galway, and Luke McCarthy & Brian Duggan.
The top five entries are completed with a pair of Group A Subaru Legacies, the early 4wd machinery now becoming eligible for Historic Championships has sparked a real revival of interest in older Group A machinery. Alan Ring & Adrian Deasy are seeded at number two, while Ray Breen & Tamara Molinaro start at number four.
Sunday will see the start of the 2022 West Cork Junior Rally, and the honour of leading the field away lies with Ryan McHugh & Declan Boyle in their Honda Civic, ahead of Jason Farrell & Donagh Crowley in a similar Honda. Third Junior is Ken Power & Andrew McCormack in a Peugeot 106 GTi.
The 2022 Clonakilty Park Hotel West Cork Rally takes place March 19th & 20th, and all the latest information on the event can be found at www.westcorkrally.com or on the events Social Media channels.

Press Release 1 - All Roads Lead To West Cork
Posted: January 8, 2022 6:45 AM
It’s with great excitement that Cork Motor Club can announce that 2022 will see the West Cork Rally roar back to Clonakilty on March 19th and 20th, with the return after a two-year hiatus being marked with a classic West Cork route packed full of some of the finest tarmac stages in the country!
A long-term supporter of the event, the Clonakilty Park Hotel are delighted to once more be the title sponsor of what will be the 42nd running of one of Irelands biggest rally events, and General Manager David Henry & his team are looking forward to welcoming everyone to the Rally HQ safely once more.
The route for the 2022 West Cork Rally has been a while in the planning, and new COC Steve Davis is seeing competitors leave the start line on March 19th 2022, ready to take on the best West Cork has to offer. “Starting as always from the very welcoming town of Clonakilty, the crews will take on the best of the stages we have to offer. All the classics are there over the two days; Ardfield, Ring & Ballinascarthy to name a few. It’s going to be two days of incredible rallying that no competitor, from Car 1 right through to Car 151, is going to want to miss!”
Preparations for the event have been underway for quite a while, with Steve Davis and his team in Cork Motor Club working closely with the West Cork Rally Fundraising Committee to ensure that the 2022 Clonakilty Park Hotel West Cork Rally will long be remembered as one of the finest events of the year.
Since 2015, the West Cork Rally has been a round of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, and we are delighted to announce that this will continue in 2022 with the West Cork Rally playing host to the 2nd round of this Championship.
The Event Regs and Entry Forms will soon be available both through www.WestCorkRally.com & www.CorkMotorClub.com, but know that we are excited to meet you all once more in Clon, Paddy’s Weekend 2022!
