Galway set to kick off 2020 Irish Tarmac Championship

This weekend’s Galway International Rally marks the start of the 2020 Irish Tarmac Rally Championship. 19 R5s and S2000s will kick off the championship on the traditional season-opener. Top seeded ITRC crews include last year’s runner-up Alastair Fisher, 2015 champion Donagh Kelly, as well as brothers Sam and Josh Moffett who are both looking for their second Tarmac Championship.

Two time Galway Rally winner, Garry Jennings, will run first on the road but won’t score ITRC points as he is in his Subaru Impreza S12B WRC.

An array of R5 machinery will tackle the challenging Galway stages with the line-up including three Volkswagen Polos, two Protons, and a brand new Ford Fiesta Mk2. There have been several drivers swap manufacturers during the winter break including the Moffetts and Desi Henry who will compete in Galway in Hyundai i20s.

The ITRC has invested in its next generation of potential champions by providing prize drives for the Junior Class 16 champion as well as the R2 champion. M-Sport Poland has also come onboard to support podium Fiesta R2 finishers on each round. R2 entrants include Johnnie Mulholland and Eamonn Kelly who are both following in the footsteps of their rally-driving Fathers.

The modified entry is topped by Galway’s Richard Whelan who finished third on his home rally last year in his BMW 130i. Behind Whelan is Armagh’s Jason Black, who returns to rallying after a short spell on the sidelines, in his Toyota Starlet which has been upgraded to Class 13 specification. Ray Breen also returns to Galway in his immaculate MG Metro 6R4.

The rally will get underway with scrutineering at Motor World, Oranmore, from 1.00pm on Saturday 1st February, followed by the ceremonial start in Eyre Square at 7.00pm. Both are ideal opportunities to see the rally cars and drivers prior to the start of the competition.

Headquarters for the event is the Clayton Hotel. The rally route will cover nine closed road stages on Sunday. The Service Park will be in the IDA Loughrea Technology and Business Park, by kind permission of the IDA. The rally will finish on Sunday evening with the ceremonial finish at the Clayton Hotel from approximately 4.30pm. Admission to all events is free over the weekend.

The competitive rally consists of three loops of three classic Galway stages, including the Black Road test. The 14.3km Tynagh stage will be the first challenge facing the competitors on Sunday with the first car due to start at 9.10am.

Rally to go ahead....

Galway Motor Club are delighted to confirm that the Corrib Oil Galway International Rally event is going to go ahead as scheduled on the 1st & 2nd February.

The event currently has 65 entries to date. The club would like to thank these competitors for the support. Entries will remain open right up until the event. Entries can be made on the evo online entry system via www.shannonsportit.ie Competitors are reminded that all fully paid entries received by the club by Friday the 24th January will be entered into a draw for a free entry which will take place on the following Monday.

The rally opens the 2020 Irish Tarmac Championship main field section and is the 2nd round of the 2020 Irish Tarmac Historic Championship. Among the top entries received to date include the Moffett siblings Sam and Josh, both of whom move to Hyundai power for 2020, while entries have also been received from Garry Jennings, Desi Henry, Donagh Kelly, Alistair Fisher, Cathan McCourt, Gareth & Jason Black, Geoffrey Dolan & Gary McNamee. Local entries to date include Pat Kelly, Tom Flaherty, Richard Whelan, David Quigley, Des Lyons, Justin Comer, Tom Cahill, John Coughlan & Frank Byrnes.

Statement from County Galway Motor Club.

The launch of the 2020 Corrib Oil Galway International Rally due to take place this evening 17th of January has been cancelled.  

The club has received excellent financial support from our Main Sponsor Corrib Oil, our other subsidiary sponsors and supporters.
However, at today’s closing date for entries, only 60 entries have been received with many unpaid. 

  At the current level of entries, the event is facing a significant substantial loss of money. The club are appealing to all current entrants to pay their entry Fee by close of business on Monday the 20th of January.   The event requires an additional 40 + entries also to be paid up by Monday next to avoid the event being cancelled.   

  A further release will be issued on Monday evening the 20th of January.

Corrib Oil Galway International Rally 2020

The 2020 Corrib Oil Galway International Rally will take place on Sunday 2nd February with a repeat of the format which made the 2019 event a success. Clerk of the Course Gary Leonard has put together a 3x3 format featuring almost 120km of competitive driving. A tight loop with centralised servicing around the town of Loughrea will see some classic and challenging stages attempted by the crews.

Galway Motor Club are delighted to have Corrib Oil back on board as title sponsor for the 2020 event while the Clayton Hotel in Galway will once again be the Rally Headquarters for the weekend. The Galway International Rally was the first rally in the Republic of Ireland to run as an international event back in 1971 and next year’s event will be the 43rd running of the rally and as is traditional, will also be the opening round of the 2020 Irish Tarmac Rally Championship.

The rally will run a week earlier than 2019 and as a result avoids a clash with the opening BRC round, the Cambrian Rally. The entry fee for the event will be the same as last year at €875 (plus €37 for tracking system and €10 towards the MSI benevolent fund). The junior rally entry is €450 again this year (plus €37 for tracking system and €10 towards the MSI benevolent fund). The compact route and early finish (first car due at the finish ramp at approximately 4pm) should make it an attractive proposition for anyone wishing to compete on the event.
