BONUS POINTS AND INCENTIVES AS 2019 TRITON CHAMPIONSHIP LAUNCHES
Posted: January 27, 2019 2:59 PM
The 2019 Triton Showers National Rally Championship that was launched at Mondello Park yesterday (Saturday) will consist of eight events with the best seven scores to count, in addition, the final two rounds will offer bonus points. A joint initiative for this season between Triton Showers and Murray Motorsport will see drivers in all the classes (with the exception of Classes 5, 7 and 16) entered into a free draw at the presentation of awards with each driver receiving €1,000.
At the launch, Triton Showers M.D., Kevin Barrett remarked, “We are all looking forward to another new season and of course the biennial switch to the eight locations. Such diversity offers a unique opportunity to continue the promotion of the Triton brand to this audience. This year’s eight locations - Abbeyleix, Longford, Monaghan, Limerick, Waterford, Sligo, Gort and Bantry are in themselves a variety of geographical regions that provide distinctive backdrops for the imagery and promotion of the Triton championship. The differing terrain also provides a great challenge for both the cars and the crews that will participate in the Triton Showers National Rally Championship.”
The eight organising clubs spend endless hours preparing for their round of the Triton series with early preparations including working with the local Gardaí and local authority. Rallying has changed dramatically over the years and its value to the tourism sector has changed the dynamic as the organising club, together with representatives of the local region, joining forces as stakeholders in maximising their efforts to promote the whole package.
All the thrilling action from this year’s Triton Showers National Rally Championship will be captured by On The Limit Sports and will be beamed on TG4 and will also available on the RTE Player. In addition, it will be shown to a worldwide audience via satellite television and YouTube.
In terms of points, the top Triton competitor on each round will received twenty (20) points while there is a single point for the quickest Triton registered driver through the Power Stage. This season and for the first time, the two final rounds will have bonus points. On the penultimate round, the Galway Summer Rally, there is one additional point for the overall Triton finishers while there will be an extra two additional points for the final event, the Fastnet Rally in Bantry.
Commenting on the series Trevor Applegate of Triton UK said, “In the four years of our sponsorship of the National Rally Championship there has been four different winners. It began in 2015 when Donegal’s Donagh Kelly became the first champion of the Triton Showers era. Since then, Clonmel’s Roy White, Monaghan’s Sam Moffett and Donegal’s Declan Boyle have been crowned Triton champions. In this our fifth year, it will be interesting to see if another different name will be etched on the prestigious Vard Memorial Trophy. Of course, all the various classes should also be keenly contested throughout the season.”
Tyre manufacturer Michelin, the official partner of the FIA World Rally Championship, will continue to support the Triton National Rally Championship. Competitors that use Michelin tyres will be awarded prizes at each of the eight Triton events that comprise this year’s series.
Along with the overall awards and class awards, the series will also continue to include the Motorsport Safety Team Group N award, the rally.ie award (highest two-wheel drive in overall classification) and the Mk. 2 Champions Trophy. In addition, the winning driver in the Triton Showers National Junior Award (Class 16) will qualify for selection process for the Billy Coleman Young Rally Driver of the Year award. There is also a Junior Trophy (Class 16A) and all the other usual classes.
In addition, the opening two rounds of this year’s Triton Showers National Rally Championship in Abbeyleix and Longford together with the Raven’s Rock Rally and the Galway Summer Rally will form part of the new Motorsport Ireland Team Ireland Rally Academy initiative that aims to promote and assist competitors focused on developing their motorsport future. This particular series - featuring the aforementioned four events together with four forest rallies (with the best five from eight rounds to count) - is aimed at drivers under 26 years of age using Class 16 (J1600) cars. It also offers a prize fund of €20,000 on training and coaching along with qualification for the selection process for Billy Coleman Young Driver of the Year award.
Triton Showers National Rally Championship chairperson Declan Tumilty said, “We are really looking forward to the year ahead. The incentives already mentioned should provide a fillip for young competitors. Recently, we met with the organising clubs and it was great to see their enthusiasm and how they plan to boost their entry numbers.
We are very fortunate to have a blue chip sponsor such as Triton Showers. Kevin, Trevor and their team put some much work into the series and we are very grateful for all their endeavours. Today’s launch is the perfect platform to get the momentum going for what should be a great season.”
THE TRITON DRIVE FOR FIVE
Posted: December 7, 2018 9:21 AM
Triton Showers are to continue its reign as title sponsors of the Irish National Rally Championship for a fifth successive season. Next season’s campaign will revert to an eight round championship incorporating a diverse range of locations and terrain throughout the four provinces. The one-day format continues to be popular with clubs and competitors and with Motorsport Ireland recently announcing that licence levies are to be dropped, it is hoped that this will lead to an increase in entries at each of the events.
Commenting on the sponsorship decision, Kevin Barrett of Triton said, “Triton are delighted to come on board for yet another year as title sponsors for the National Rally Championship. The past four years has seen the coming together of brands that share a mutual appreciation for the sport and this has continuously resulted in a resounding success. With eight events set at different locations across the country, the Triton Showers National Rally Championship continues to provide top class rallying and entertainment for all event attendees. ”
In the four years under the Triton banner there has been four different winners. In 2015 Donegal’s Donagh Kelly (Ford Focus WRC) won the title and was crowned champion on the sixth round in Sligo. He was followed in 2016 by Clonmel’s Roy White (Ford Fiesta WRC), who celebrated on his home event, the Tipperary Stonethrowers Rally. The 2017 Triton Showers National Rally Championship was won by Monaghan’s Sam Moffett (Ford Fiesta WRC), who like Donagh Kelly, also clinched the series in Sligo. This year, Declan Boyle took a final round title win and secured Vard Memorial Trophy in his home county in Donegal.
Indeed, that was a significant victory as Boyle became only the second driver to win a hat trick of national titles having previously won the series in 2014 and 2013. Monaghan’s Niall Maguire held that unique honour with his three wins – 1999, 2002 and 2004.
Boyle is set to defend his title in 2019, can he become the first four-time winner or will the exclusive sequence of a different winner each season remain under the Triton banner?
That quest begins on the final Sunday of February next as the Birr and District Motor Club return to Abbeyleix for their premier event.
Elsewhere, the Midland Motor Club are returning to Longford to host its round and while the remaining events retain their usual locations, the Galway Motor Club will decide this Friday as to where they will base the Galway Summer Rally at he end of August next.
Meanwhile, Trevor Applegate of Triton UK remarked, “As well as the importance of lending support to such an amazing event, sponsoring the National Rally Championship is a fantastic branding exercise for Triton, which yields extensive media coverage each year. We look forward to the success of another great year in 2019 as partners to the National Rally Championship.”
The 2019 Triton Showers National Rally Championship, that will be launched next month (details will be announced shortly) will consist of the eight event, details below.
