The PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship launch will take place on Sunday 5th March at the Vienna Woods Hotel, Glanmire at 2pm. This popular clubman championship which has been running since 1998 will kick into gear with the first round, the Quality Hotel Clonakilty West Cork Rally which takes place on the 18th & 19th March. The event has been the traditional championship opener every year. The 2016 championship was won by Charlie & Johnny Hickey the father and son team from Killarney in their Ford Escort Mk2.

Within these regulations are technical regulations for the new Southern 4 Junior Trophy which is aimed at encouraging new junior competitors into the sport of rallying while also offering a cost effective, competitive championship for existing junior competitors.

Just some of the technical requirements for the Junior Trophy are;

No sequential gearboxes
Limited suspension modifications
Standard inlet and exhaust manifolds

The list of associate sponsors for the Junior Trophy includes SW Adair Tyres, P&J Casey Engineering, Paul Browne Plant Hire, Healy Motorsport, EARS Motorsport and each of the constituent clubs in the championship. With a prize fund in excess of ?3000 it is a great opportunity for a driver to compete in a relatively affordable car on some of the best rallies in the country.

Other changes to the championship include 50% bonus points to be award on the final round, the Fastnet Rally in Bantry and the Imokilly Mini Stages Rally in July will now award full points.

New Junior Award for the 2017 PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship

The organisers of the PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship are delighted to announce details of the new Junior Trophy award for 2017. This award is aimed at encouraging new junior competitors into the sport of rallying while also offering a cost effective, competitive championship for existing junior competitors. The award will aim to provide a more simplified approach to the building and preparation of junior specification rally cars. The emphasis will be on using more standard parts while permitting sensible and affordable modifications to be incorporated.

The Junior Trophy will run in parallel with the existing Southern 4 Junior Rally Championship with Junior Trophy competitors also being eligible to win the overall 2017 Southern 4 Junior Rally Championship title. Cars that are not eligible for the Junior Trophy category will compete for the overall Southern 4 Junior Rally Championship title as before. The Southern 4 Rally Championship Committee is delighted to be able to announce that a substantial prize list will be on offer to the winners of the 2017 PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Junior Trophy, details of which are currently being finalised.
