Cahill and Czapnik dominate loose autocross

Posted: January 26, 2017 3:23 AM

Sean Cahill (JB Buggy) won the 2016 Munster Autocross Championship on the last round of the series. Cahill earlier lifted the National Loose Autocross (Buggy) Championship and the Wexfordman is the first driver to win both championships in the same year. In the National series Cahill won every round and in Munster he claimed victory in 5 rounds and he amassed 135 points. Runner up in Munster was Paul O'Driscoll (Semog Buggy) who tied with Whitby Moynan (Toyota Special) on 116 points, but O'Driscoll scooped second as his score on the first event was better than Moynan. Fourth overall was claimed by Fermoy based Polish driver Lukasz Czapnik (Impreza). However Czapnik will remember 2016 as the year he was the best saloon driver in Munster and National autocross, another remarkable autocross double. West Limerick drivers Eddie Walsh (Impreza) and William Meade (Nova) were second and third saloons home.

2016 was a great year for Munster Autocross, with an increase in registered competitors, now standing at 44. As ever the competition was fierce as proven with the championship going down to the wire on the last round. All nine rounds of the championship were held as planned and the autocross committee are grateful for the efforts of the clubs and their COCs and marshals. The clubs who participated are :Skibbereen (2 races), Munster, Clare, Killarney, Imokilly, Birr, Limerick and Cork.

Championship Regulations / Entry Form

Posted: February 26, 2016 2:52 PM

There are a number of changes from previous years:

    (a) In line with Motorsport Ireland's class structure:,
    - class 2 is for 1451 to 1650cc with no more than 2 valves per cylinder (to attract 1600 8v cars),
    - class 3 is for 1451 to 1650cc with more than 2 valves per cylinder (the more common 1600 16v cars)
    - class 10 for buggies/ specials up to 600cc to cater for the growing numbers of JB & Semog buggies.

    (b) Munster Autocross defines a 'junior' as any competitor, male of female, who is under 21 years of age on 1/1/2016. This is at variance to the age criteria and classes as prescribed by Motorsport Ireland, but is only used for the purpose of the Munster Autocross Championship.
It means that, within the Munster Autcross Championship, competitors in Junior and Intermediate classes for 14 to 18 year olds will be eligible to score points in the class appropriate for their vehicle, i.e. classes 1 to 3. If they do not feature in the normal class awards at the end of the Championship, the first three Juniors will receive awards.

    (c) Similar to the Juniors, Ladies will be eligible to score points in the class appropriate for their vehicle and age, i.e. classes 1 to 3 if under 18 or classes 1 to 7 and 10 if over 18. If they do not feature in the normal class awards or the Junior awards at the end of the Championship, the first three Ladies will receive awards.

    (d) A Best Novice award will be awarded to the highest placed competitor who is over 21 and on their first competition licence and who is not receiving another award.

    (e) Any competitor can only receive one award in the Championship, but to qualify for an award, a competitor must have started a minimum of 3 rounds, with at least one finish.
Competitors must ensure to complete their registration for the championship before they start their first event. This can be done on the morning of the event.
