Cal Contemplates Cork 20 Rally
Posted: September 29, 2014 12:08 PM
For 25 year old Cal McCarthy and his co-driver Eamonn Dullea, in the Carbery Plastics Honda Civic, the home Irish Tarmac Championship event beckons this weekend. Two days of the Cork 20 Rally lie in store and the team are hoping for better fortunes after mechanical maladies on the Killarney and Donegal rounds of the Clonakilty Black Pudding Irish Tarmac series.
A class winning position in the series is now unobtainable, but Cal dearly wants a class win and a top five place in the National on this event.
“We will have to settle in and speed up as we go. It’s an event that’s not easy to get to the finish of, and there are plenty of twisty bits to test the driver and car. The class will be very hotly contested. Jason Ryan I’m sure will be going well and Noel Kelleher too could be another challenger. In 2012 we had a great run and ran second to Frank Kelly on the National for quite a while, but we know that’s it’s not an easy event by any means.”
The Clare Stages rally was tackled in the class 11F Carbery Honda, two weeks ago and the result was a class victory and an excellent twelfth place overall, despite dropping to thirtieth over the first two stages with a failed clutch. The gearbox issues which have dogged the team of late seem to be put behind them, and the clutch was remedied during the Clare event, the team setting some superb times over the closing stages.
“Clare went better than we expected” added Cal. “We tried a new tyre from Kumho and it worked very well. Once we got the clutch sorted the times were good, so it was a worthwhile exercise before the Cork 20.”
The other Carbery Plastics Honda, driven by Conor McCarthy has been tackling the Irish Forestry Championship this season. So far it’s been a superb year for the young West Cork driver, a potential candidate for the Billy Coleman Award. He is leading the Junior series, despite a break-down on the Cork Forestry event. On Saturday, after making the long trip North to Omagh for the Bushwhacker Rally, Conor recorded another good result, finishing ahead of his Junior rival Shane Kenneally, and now looks forward to the Carrick On Suir and Glens of Antrim rounds of the Irish Forestry series.
Keep up to date with the team’s progress on their website www.carberyplasticsrallying.com Facebook page- Carbery Plastics Rally Team and Twitter @CPRallying.

Press Release No 6 - Cronin in DS3 R5
Posted: September 25, 2014 9:12 PM
The Centenerary event of the Acesigns Cork 20 International Rally is delighted to be able to announce that Former Multiple British Rally Champion Keith Cronin is to contest this year’s event in the Irish debut of the new Citroen DS3 R5. This is a great coup for the rally and the Clerk of the Course Kevin O’Riordan and the Munster Car Club are delighted that Keith has chosen our even to debut this new machine.
The car has just landed on Irish Soil so as yet is an unknown quantity on Irish tarmac Rallying but with a driver of Keith’s calibre behind the wheel I am sure that he will be well up on the timesheets and a spectacle to watch out on the stages over the weekend. Keith has won the British Rally Championship three times in 2009, 10 and 12 and was the first Irish Driver to do so since the famous Billy Coleman who was indeed one of Keith Cronin’s hero’s so it is very fitting that Keith will use the Hometown of Billy Coleman; Millstreet to debut this new and exciting machine.
We at the Munster Car Club are delighted to be associated with the next chapter in what will hopefully be a very successful one for all the team at Cronin Motorsport and we would like to take this opportunity to wish Keith and all the Team the very best as he will be tackling events a lot further away from home in the very near future.
The Acesigns Cork 20 International Rally is based in Millstreet in the Greenglens Arena From October 3rd-5th . Please come down and enjoy the free show.

This year the Rally will have a real Carnival atmosphere surrounding the town of Millstreet. Having an event such as the Cork 20 running for a hundred year’s is something the members of Munster Car Club are very proud about and rightly so. Indeed it is a great honour for me as C.O.C on this very special year. I will be outlining details of the event over the coming months but at this early juncture I would like to point out that we will have centralised service in the renowned Green Glens Arena which proved to be classed as one of the best service area’s on the 2013 Irish tarmac Rally Championship calendar. This means that service crews can set up in the Green Glens arena on Friday and not move a service barge until Sunday evening. We will be basing all our stages around the Millstreet area for the October 3rd – 5th event.
There will be a number of other events happening over the weekend not only in the service area but in Millstreet town as well. O’Riordan continued that he would like to thank the Duggan family for the use of their world renowned venue where Riverdance first came to our screens when the Eurovision song contest was based in the venue.
Full accommodation lists will be published over the coming weeks so as people and crews can book their beds early to avoid disappointment.
