Motor Club Bring Back ‘Erne Trophy Sprint’
Posted: June 30, 2014 11:26 AM
Enniskillen Motor Club took to The Diamond last Saturday to broadcast that they have brought back ‘The Erne Trophy Sprint’ on the runways of St Angelo Airfield for 2014. Last run in 1995 the Motor Club has decided to resurrect ‘The Erne Trophy Sprint’ as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations in 2014. A special feature of this exciting event is the simultaneous running of a Classic Car and Bike Show on a separate section of the Airfield.
The first Sprint car will blast away at 10.00am on the smooth tar of the airfield’s main runway, whilst over at the hangars near the Control Tower a mouth-watering selection of bye-gone classic cars and bikes can be viewed at a more leisurely pace.
The Motor Club expect almost 100 cars to scream around the spectacular Track constructed by Event Director, Declan Gannon and his EMC team.
The format will be: 2 ‘Practice Runs’ then 3 Timed Runs’. There will be a leisurely Parade Lap of the Classics during a short break after the 2 ‘Practice Runs’
John Donnelly from Beragh lent EMC the Pilbeam MP42 to show in The Diamond which he sometimes shares with daughter Cathy. But on Saturday 5th July, John will pilot a Reynard SF80 while Cathy will simply ‘fly’ in a Delta F4. Among other single –seaters challenging for Overall Honours will be David and Andy in a Lotus Reynard in the Racing Car Class vying with Ian Howard in a Maguire Mini in Class 8 plus Ivan McCullough in an extremely rapid Nissan GTR in Class 3. With some 17 Classes running, one of the most eagerly awaited will be the ‘Rally Car Classes’ 10 + 11] which will include the immaculate 1400cc Puma of Davy Forde shared with son-in-law Jonni McDaid plus the usual Escort specialists and the Lotus Sunbeam of Omagh’s Robert McFarland. The Historic Class should see Historic Rally specialist Mervyn Johnston in his inimitable Austin Mini Cooper ‘S’ the man to beat. Along with Mervyn will be the unusual Ford Anglia 105Es of Robert and Olivia Coulter and Gerry Cavanagh, plus the fabulous–sounding V8 of Conn Williamson’s Sunbeam Tiger
Over at the Classic Car section spectators will enjoy drooling over such delights as, Paul Loudon-Brown’s E-Type Jaguar, Godfrey Crawford’s gleaming MkII 3.8 Jaguar, Davy Donnell’s beautiful Guards red 911 Carrera, Hamish Logan’s Triumph TR5 and Brian Patterson’s MGA. Terence Warnock’s very rare Mini Pick-up will nestle among the Coopers of Ernie Campbell, Gerry McGarrity and Mervyn Johnston while Martin Treacy’s Lotus Sunbeam and Ronald Montgomery’s beautifully restored BMW 2002Tii will be a welcome relief from all the usual Escorts and Cortinas. The ‘Good Ole US of A will also be represented by a Chevrolet Impala of Robert Hutchinson and the Willys Jeeps of Liam Wallace. Other machines include Porsche 911 Turbo [930 model] and the glorious sounding Audi Quattro.
Free on-site car parking, plus an admission fee of just £5 with U-16s free, makes this day a superb value for money family day out.
