MOFFETT/CONNOLLY GRABS VICTORY IN BALTINGLASS RALLY

It is said that a good start is half the battle, and for Monaghan driver, Richard Moffett, and navigator, Martin Connolly, it was certainly true when they were fastest by ten seconds on the opening stage of the Garda Siochana Motor Club’s 2013 Germaines of Baltinglass Mini Stages Rally, an event they went on to win in their rear wheel drive Toyota Starlet. When the times were totted at the finish, the clocks said that Moffett and Connolly had taken a three second victory. Remarkably, having held the initial advantage, they had lost the lead after the second stage, and only regained it on the final stage. What was even more remarkable was that the event had seen four changes of leader over its six stages, and four drivers in all had their turns at the top of the timesheets.

Behind Moffett, Mike Quinn (Ford Escort RS) and Stephen McCann (Mitsubishi Lancer) shared second place after the opening test, with Pat Donegan (Escort RS) a further second down in fourth, and Trevor Culbert in fifth, seventeen seconds behind the early leader. Culbert went quickest on the second test, to vault into joint second place with Moffett, who gave away his early advantage with an overshoot, and while Donegan’s time was two seconds slower than Culbert on the stage, it was still enough to take the lead. Quinn also lost out over the Three Bridges stage, his time eleven seconds down on Culbert, and he dropped to fourth.

Despite sharing second fastest time on the opener, McCann had no fourth gear and second was popping out as well. He retired his Mitsubishi Lancer at the first Service after the throttle stuck and the starter failed. Ashford’s Lloyd Hutchinson also encountered trouble on the opening stage when his Mini developed a misfire, and crawled through that and the following stage. A failed crank sensor was replaced at service, but the fix did not completely cure the misfire.

Barry Ryan (Escort RS) was fifth after the opening stage, but fell down the order after stage two, behind Shay Power (Escort RS), George Condell (Escort RS) and Graham Scallan (Subaru Impreza N14).

Culbert overtook Donegan for the lead on stage three, the second run over Keadeen, with Moffett and Quinn also moving into the top three positions, ahead of Donegan, who was finding his engine down on power. Culbert’s tenure in the lead was short lived however, as his Escort had a slight off and broke a track control arm on the very next stage. He and co-driver, Ray Fitzpatrick, pulled off the road into a farmer’s yard, expecting to retire, only for the farmer to produce a welder and assist with some running repairs. They crept through the rest of stage four, and made it to service in Baltinglass. They comfortably recorded the fastest time on both of the final two stages, and were left to rue what might have been.

Moffett and Quinn set equal times on stage three, so the gap between them remained at four seconds in Moffett’s favour, but Quinn was faster by eight seconds on stage four, turning his four second deficit into a four second advantage. With Culbert’s problems, Quinn had taken the lead. Donegan, now in third place, was only two further seconds behind Moffett in the overall standings.

Power was fourth in his Escort RS, eighteen seconds down on the leading trio while Condell and Scallan completed the top six. Barry Ryan stopped on the second run over Three Bridges test, when his Escort’s gearbox broke.

The penultimate stage saw Moffett close to within one second of Quinn, and Moffett was then four seconds faster on the final test, to seal the win in the closest of finishes. It marked Moffett’s first overall rally victory, and speaking afterwards, he revealed that there was no grand plan to win it on the first stage, despite his strong start:
“We just had a steady run through it, we weren’t committed that hard, just kept a good pace. We put a good effort into the recce, so that helped us. Then we had the overshoot on stage two, that cost us about ten seconds, and we were about fifteen down on the lead, so we were back to square one. My brother David had big off on stage two as well, so I was wary of that section when we were going through it again on stage four. It was probably the only particularly bad bit of road on the whole rally, it was a very narrow section. It’s only looking back on it I can see how it would happen there, it looked okay when you were driving through it.”

With Culbert’s troubles on stage four, the battle for the rally over the closing loop came down to Moffett and Quinn, but Moffett again had been circumspect about his chances:
“At the service, I was thinking to myself that I had thrown it away with the overshoot earlier. We were eight down on Mike going into the last couple of stages, then there was only one between us going into the last one, but I wasn’t going to do anything stupid, we were up against Class 14 cars. To be honest, I would have been delighted with second. We hadn’t had much luck this year, before Baltinglass we had only finished one rally out of five with the car, so we were probably due some good luck for a change. We had two good times on the last loop, enough to get the job done.”

Donegan picked up 15 seconds of road penalties between the final service and the penultimate stage. His advantage over Power was reduced to four seconds ahead of the final stage, and Power was then seven seconds faster over the closing kilometres, enough to claim third place in the final reckoning. Again, the eventual margin between the drivers was merely three seconds. Behind Donegan, Condell, Scallan, John Hendy (BMW M3), Tom Relihan (Escort RS), Thomas Lynch (Honda Civic) and John Lynch (Escort RS) completed the top ten. Lloyd Hutchinson’s event ended on stage five when his Mini understeered off the road.

The GSMC Mini Stages was the final round of the class-based LoughranSigns.com Midlands East Championship. Alan and David Gibbons won Class 9 on the event, and this also gave them the overall Midlands East title, as their main rivals, Philip McDonald and Seamus Curran, with whom they shared the Championship lead going into the event, were beaten into second in Class 2 in Baltinglass.

CULBERT/FITZPATRICK HEAD BALTINGLASS RALLY LINE-UP

The Garda Siochana Motor Club has attracted an entry of one hundred crews for its 2013 Mini Stages Rally, which will take place on Sunday next, October 13th, in the Baltinglass area of Co. Wicklow. The Germaine’s Hotel sponsored event will start just after 11am, when the first of three loops of the Keadeen and Three Bridges stages gets underway, and the number one seed on the road will be Trevor Culbert from nearby Kiltegan, who will be partnered by regular co-driver, Ray Fitzpatrick, in his Ford Escort RS. Culbert finished third on this event in 2011, and won the Laois Heartlands Rally last year. He has been a regular entrant on the GSMC Rally since the event was established in 2002, and it would be fitting if he were to add a Baltinglass victory to his CV.

Second on the road will be the Limerick man, Ed O’Callaghan, also in an Escort RS. O’Callaghan has been a front runner in the ‘Modifieds’ in recent times, and has taken category honours on a number of events, including the Clare Rally last month. He will be guided by Peter Scott. Completing the Escort trio at the head of the field will be Chris Armstrong, who, at just 21 years of age, has made a huge impression on the Irish rallying scene this year. He was in the hunt for Modified victory on the Galway International Rally in February, before going off the road on the final stage. He then took an outright win on the Midland Rally the following month, and was the top Modified finisher on the ALMC Rally in July.

Further Wicklow interest among the top seeds is provided by Ashford’s Lloyd Hutchinson, who finished sixth overall on the GSMC Rally in 2012 in his indecently rapid Austin Mini.

An intriguing entry, seeded just outside the top ten, comes from Italian driver, Fabrizio Fellone, who runs a Take-Away in Baltinglass. He regularly commutes to his home country to take part in rallies and slaloms, where he drives a Renault Clio R3, but this will be his first event in Ireland. He has obtained an Irish competition license especially to take part in the GSMC Rally, and has hired a Mitsubishi Lancer from Derek Jobb Motorsport for the occasion. Local man, William Ashton, will be calling the pace notes for Fallone over the Baltinglass stages. Fallone recently finished third in the Group A category on the Slalom Citta’ di Santopadre, a round of the Italian Slalom Championship.

The Germaines of Baltinglass Mini Stages Rally 2013 will also see the outcome of LoughranSigns.com Midlands East Rally Championship decided, with two crews, Philip McDonald and Seamus Curran (Class 2 Honda Civic EK4) and Alan and David Gibbons (Class 9 Honda Civic EG6) currently tied at the top of the standings. Points in the Midlands East Championship are allocated on Class positions, therefore, if both crews were to win their respective classes in Baltinglass, the awarding of the title would have to be decided on a tie-break.

The Baltinglass Mini Stages Rally 2013 is on it's way! Good testing stages this year, 6 stages 2 x 3 times.There is a 365 euro early entry fee, and the regulations / entry forms will be available shortly.
