Preview for the fifth round of the REIS – Get Connected MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, the Wilkinson Maintenance Tyneside Stages Rally

As the REIS – Get Connected MSA Asphalt Rally Championship heads up to the Otterburn Military Ranges in Northumberland on 11th August for the Wilkinson Maintenance Tyneside Stages, defending champion – and winner of the event for the past two years – Damian Cole knows that he will have his work cut out if he is to move his campaign forward.
As the Championship approaches the halfway stage (the Tyneside is the fifth of nine rounds), Steve Simpson/Patrick Walsh top the points table in their Subaru Impreza WRC. They, and second-placed Washington James (Darrian T90 GTR), have finished all four rounds to date and face the task of ‘dropping’ an event later in the season. Meanwhile, Paul Bird’s absence from the Jim Clark National Rally, allied to outright wins on both the Manx National and ALMC Stages Rallies, sees the Ford Focus WRC driver in a strong third place prior to the first of two trips to Otterburn.
For his part, Cole’s support for the Championship of which he is part-sponsor has seen him start each round to date. Although only four points adrift of Bird, a rare retirement on the Jim Clark, when his Focus’ clutch failed, has left the three-time MSA Asphalt Champion in need of some top scores, and achieving a hat-trick on the Tyneside Stages would be ‘just what the doctor ordered’!
Gary Le Coadou/Paul Hollingham will be taking their Toyota Corolla WRC from Somerset up to Otterburn. Having retired from last year’s Tyneside Stages with electrical trouble, they will be hoping that their recent successful outing on the ALMC Stages will enable them to do likewise in north-east England.
In addition to the Ford Focus STI of Chris Jones and former Tyneside Stages winning co-driver Ashley Trimble, Simon Chapman/Michael Calvert’s Metro 6R4 and the Fiesta S2000 of Alex Laffey/Jack Morton, the remaining 4WD machinery (not including Group
N) falls into two categories – Subarus and Mitsubishis. David Hardie/John McCulloch, Chris Daykin/Dan Megannity, Adrian Spencer/Mark Hewitt and Ross Miller are in the former, while Chris Marshall/Simon Hunter and Mark Borthwick will be relying on their Lancer EVOs for a result.
Rob Tout/Dan Holley are having a frustrating time in the defence of the Group N title they won so convincingly in 2012. However, they are persevering with their Lancer EVO9 and start the Tyneside with the express intention of getting the better of the Imprezas of Chris Rice/Giles Dykes and Julian Barnett/Andrew Smith.
As ever this year, there is a strong presence of Millington Rear-Wheel Drive Challenge contenders, including last year’s winners, Richard Felgate/Mark Mason (BMW M3), and current leader – and 2010 Tyneside Stages winner – Simon Mauger with co-driver Brian Cammack in his Ford Escort MkII. Joining Washington James in Darrians are Ashley Field/Josh Davison and John Indri who took outright victory in his particular example the last time the MSA Asphalt Championship visited the Otterburn Ranges for the Cheviot Keith Knox Stages in November 2012. Escorts will also be appearing in the hands of Darren Atkinson/Phil Sandham and Graham Watkins/Terry Martin.
In the battle for FWD honours, it should not be forgotten that Chris Anderson/Chris Thirling finished 2nd overall in their Wilkinson Maintenance-sponsored Ford Fiesta on the 2012 Tyneside. Needless to say, they face some stern competition as they bid to repeat their giant-killing feat once again! Amongst those attempting to wrest top points from them will be Darren & Sue Underwood whose rapid 1600cc Nova was 7th overall last year, 2012 FWD Champions Matt Beebe/Paula Swinscoe (MG ZR 190) and Sean Robson in his Fiesta.
Having been absent from the past couple of rounds, Craig Jose/Nigel Hewett rejoin the campaign for AB Motorsport Peugeot 205 Challenge points and will be looking to close the gap on leaders Tim Daltry/Emma Morrison. In the up to 1400cc category, Howard Moore/Sasha Heriot (Lotus Elise) and Simon Stewart (Vauxhall Corsa) will be going head-to-head in the battle for the end-of-season prize of £500 worth of product from Titan Fuchs Race.
As can be seen from the above, a very healthy Championship entry (50% of the total) has been received by the organisers of the Tyneside Stages and the first of these leaves the start on the Otterburn Ranges at 9.00am on Sunday 11th August. Nine stages and 90 competitive miles later, the finishers begin arriving back at Rally HQ, the Otterburn Leisure Centre, from 4.30pm.
