Festival to bring €6million into Limerick and Mid-West Region

Posted: July 5, 2013 12:51 PM

The Irish Festival of Speed, which takes place on the August Bank Holiday Weekend, is expected to provide a huge boost to the Limerick and mid-west economy. The motorsport event, which is being run for just the second time, is expected to have an economic benefit of over €6million for the Limerick region.

The Irish Festival of Speed last took place at Adare Manor in 2011, attracting crowds of 16,000 for what was a one day event. The inaugural festival brought €3million into the local economy with all local hotels selling out. A quarter of the crowd that day were not from the region and 10% had travelled from overseas to attend the Festival.

This year the Irish Festival of Speed will be run across two days on the 3rd and 4th August at a specially laid track at Greenmount Racecourse in Limerick and it is expected that the benefit to the local economy will exceed €6million.

The event is a mix of demonstrations and exhibitions from all things motorsport from 1930’s Grand Prix cars to modern day supercars. It will include rally cars, vintage and classic cars, motorcycles and air displays across the weekend. There will be sprint racing across both days on the track, sky divers, stunt motorbike riding and a Supercar Paddock including Ferrari, Maserati and Porsche Clubs.

Richard O’Donnell, co-founder of the Irish Festival of Speed, said;
“This is the largest motorsport event in Ireland and will provide a huge boost to the region. We see the event growing in a similar fashion to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK which attracts 150,000 people year on year. In five years time we expect to have grown this to a 100,000 person event, which will be massive for the region and will attract visitors from across the globe.

“This really is a five star event and everything around the event is aimed at ensuring that attendees enjoy a five star experience here. We have made the biggest investment in Irish motorsport in 40 years with the laying of a purpose built track at Limerick Racecourse and we think this year’s Irish Festival of Speed is going to be one of the best events in the country this year. There is something for everyone; the person with a passing interest in cars to the complete motoring fanatic, and something for all the famility too with exhibitions stalls, some fantastic aerobatic shows and displays from our stunt riders,” O’Donnell said.

The weekend will also see a part reenactment of the "Round the Houses" 1930's Limerick Grand Prix, on Saturday evening as the Supercars and some of the original cars from the 1930's Grand Prix drive through the city following an expo of the Supercars at Limerick Potato Market. This will attract huge numbers of people to Limerick city centre.

Irish Festival of Speed takes place on the IFS Circuit at the Limerick Racecourse on the 3rd and 4th August. Tickets for the event are currently discounted by 35% and are available for a limited time for €20 for a day ticket or €28.50 for a weekend ticket.
