R.A.C boom time at Autosport International
Posted: January 15, 2013 10:55 AM
It was boom time for both the Roger Albert Clark Rally and the West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C Rally Championship during Autosport International at the Birmingham NEC (10-13 January).
As the show entered its final couple of hours, rally and championship manager Colin Heppenstall reflected on four days of hectic activity with unrivalled levels of competitor and spectator interest in both the rally and the championship. By the close of the show, 36 championship registrations had been taken and at least another 20 are due before the start of the opening round, the Red Kite Stages on Sunday 20 January.
Pride of place on the stand went to the Ford Escort Mk2 that Marty McCormack and Phil Clarke took to a famous victory on the ninth Roger Albert Clark Rally. McCormack was on hand to sign autographs on Saturday as hundreds of fans stopped by the stand to chat about the sensational 2012 rally and pick up some early information on plans for 2013.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with the response to the championship and the level of interest,” said Heppenstall. “As well as the amazing reaction from the current historic crews, I’m delighted with the interest from people looking to run pre ’87 cars. The championship gives these cars an opportunity to come back out and that is going to happen: not immediately, but certainly later this year and into 2014.”
Meanwhile, the reaction to the 2012 Roger Albert Clark Rally remains remarkably strong. “The feedback is that the new format was a real key to the success of the 2012 rally,” said Heppenstall.
Details about the 2013 Roger Albert Clark Rally (8-10 November), the WWRS R.A.C Rally Championship and the Carlisle Stages (22 June) were all available from members of the Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club.
In less than a week, the new R.A.C Rally Championship will start with 55 contenders on the Red Kite Stages (Sunday 20 January). “I’d like to thank all the competitors for supporting the opening round and the team at Amman and District Motor Club for their hard work in organising what is going to be a great day’s rallying,” said Heppenstall.
