MEM MALTON FOREST RALLY Sunday 4th November 2012

MEM MALTON FOREST RALLY REPORT

Posted: February 27, 2014 12:22 PM

Charlie Payne from Ripon driving a Ford Focus WRC justified his number one seeding by winning the event for the fourth year on the trot. He didn’t dominate the event like he did last year and was three seconds behind eventual runners up Peter Stephenson from Thirsk in his Able sponsored Focus WRC at the halfway mark. This was partly due to a slight off on one stage, put down to his advancing years by co driver Craig Thorley and also to a throttle which stuck wide open on the Gale Rigg stage. Quick times on the last three stages gave him victory by 33 seconds at the end. Close behind in third place was Stephen Petch from Durham in a Mitsubishi Evo.

Drive of the event was by Malton potato farmer Steve Bannister in his historic class Escort, finishing in fourth place overall and beating many modern four wheel drive cars in the process. By winning the historic category Steve became the overall 2012 Motoscope Northern Historic champion.

Following Bannister in the historics was current championship leader Charlie Taylor from Northallerton, but he was 2 minutes 44 seconds behind at the end of the six stages. Steve Magson from Pickering was third in his Vauxhall Chevette.

n the classes there were wins for Mat Smith from Pickering in his 1.4 Ka, finishing in 13th overall to boot. Class two was won by Andy Stretton and Ian Harden in their 205Gti. Class three went to Robert Barrett/Dave Hammond in their Ford Escort.

66 cars started the event and 44 finished. The weather was very kind for a change after a frosty start and there were lots of satisfied customers at the finish.

Entries Closing Shortly

Posted: October 18, 2012 4:21 PM

With over a week to go before entries close a strong field of over 60 cars is anticipated for the forthcoming Malton Forest Rally. World Rally cars entered include last year’s winner Charlie Payne (Ripon) in his Ford Focus, Peter Stephenson (Thirsk) in his Able Ports sponsored Ford Focus and Steve Petch (Scorton) in his Mitsubishi Evo

A good list of historic cars is led by Tim Mason (Bradford) in his Porsche 911 with a host of Mk II Escorts including Steve Bannister, Andrew Siddall, Charlie Taylor and Steve Magson (Chevette).

Further entries are anticipated from crews participating in the Roger Albert Clark Rally which takes place four weeks after the Malton event and is based at Pickering Showground.

Starting from its new base at Dalby Forest Visitor Centre the event is a counting round of several regional championships and is the second round of the Yorkshire Winter Rally Challenge. Stages in Langdale, Cropton and Gale Rigg forests will be used.

One local navigator, Jim Goodman from Hunmanby, is celebrating 40 years of rallying by co-driving for Neil Cockerill from Whitby in a Mark II Escort. His first rally was the Scarborough Stages in 1972 navigating for Tony Drmmond, also in an Escort. The organisers have promised to provide a zimmer frame for Jim on the event.

Press Release

Regulations are now available for the MEM Malton Forest Rally on the motor club’s website.

The event will take place on Sunday, 4th November and will be based at Dalby Forest Visitor Centre, near Pickering, North Yorkshire. Three forest stages, each used twice, will be held in the forests of Langdale, Gale Rigg and Cropton to make up a total stage mileage of 40 miles.

The entry fee has been retained at last year’s level and the move to Dalby will reduce road mileage in order to contain costs. In an effort to encourage smaller cars a class for up to 1000cc has been included for the first time.

The event is a counting round for three Regional championships and is also a round of the MOTOSCOPE Northern Historic Championship and the JUST FERRIES Yorkshire Winter Rally Challenge.

Historic cars will run at the front of the field. This event would be an ideal shakedown for the Roger Albert Clark rally which runs in the same area just four weeks later.
