Round 6 - 2011 South East Stages Rally Championship
Breen/Brady - 6th Overall and a Class Win at the Stonethrowers
Posted: August 9, 2011 12:00 PM
After the ultra fast gravel stages of World Rally Finland last weekend, Craig returned home today to the tarmac and a class 6 win and 6th overall in the Sepam Stonethrowers Rally. Using his Keltech Ford Fiesta R2 the Irish driver battled with Robert Barrable, the current Billy Coleman Award winner over the nine stage event and was happy with his days work as he prepares for round 4 of the FIA WRC Academy, WRC Rally Deutschland in two weeks time. “I was satisfied with my result. We set a good pace but the event was dominated by the weather. Tyre choice was hard as heavy showers prevailed all through the day and grip was at a minimum but to claim 6th overall and the class win was just the preparation I needed as I head into the every important event in Germany.”
The opening loop was tackled in dry conditions and Craig’s initial class battle was with local driver Andrew Fanning (Ford Puma), who set 8:03 with Craig one second away and Dubliner Robert Barrable a further second off Craig’s third. In the rally overall the top three in class 6 were positioned in 7th, 9th and 10th respectively. On stage two the battle intensified as all three were tied on time. Barrable was the one to benefit with his tyre selection and pulled out a narrow four second lead.
As the cars were in service after the opening loop the rain that was threatening arrived and for the remainder of the event, tyre choice became a lottery. Over the second loop Craig dropped to 10th overall on stage four but on stage five he was back up in 7th, all the while remaining second in the class. He then held station on stage six and reported to be happy in service with only the final loop to contend.
On that final loop the Keltech backed car gained another overall place on stage six to take 6th place overall. Craig then brought the front wheel drive Fiesta home over the final two stages to secure the overall place. Craig was delighted with the result and his next event will be round four of the FIA WRC Academy in Germany on the 19th and 20th, just under two weeks from now.
