The opening round of the 2011 Kerry Motor Club Autosolo Championships takes place this coming Sunday 10th April in Tralee Racecourse Ballybeggan Tralee with 12 special tests facing the competing competitors. Kerry Motor Club were the first club in Ireland to introduce this form of motorsport to Ireland 2 years ago and once again this year they have introduced a first in Ireland for the Autosolo competition with the introduction of a modified car for disabled drivers. The club sourced a Honda Civic for the competition and modified it to include hand controls for the accelerator and brakes, fitted a steering knob on the steering wheel and replaced the seat belt with proper race harnesses. The car will make its debut this Sunday with Tralee man Roy Guerin behind the wheel. Roy who competed in the 1996 Atlanta and 2008 Beijing Paralympics games will test drive the car on Sunday at Tralee Racecourse on the opening round of the motor club’s Autosolo championship. Roy who was ranked as high a 3rd in the world said,
“ It will be my first time taking part in a motorsport event and I’m the only person in Kerry at present with the new motorsport competition licence for disabled drivers. “ I am really looking forward to competing on Sunday because before this the option was not there for me to compete and I must say credit is due to Kerry Motor Club for approaching me to take part and they now have set the standard. “They took it upon themselves to modify the car which will now give the chance to other wheelchair users who love motorsport the chance to participate. “ This will open up motorsport to other wheelchair users not just locally but countrywide”.

The format for the Autosolo will see drivers compete over 3 special tests repeated 4 times. Drivers will nave to negotiate the challenging course around number cones and will be timed against the clock. Action will get underway at 11 am on Sunday morning at Tralee racecourse.
