Perez Finishes Championship In Style With Six Wins Out Of Eight

Posted: November 10, 2010 12:51 PM

Kick Energy rally driver Steve Perez claimed yet another Silverstone Tyres BTRDA Rally Championship victory on the 55th running of The Cambrian Rally, making it six wins out of eight rounds.

In very wet and slippy conditions, Perez from Chesterfield, and Welsh co-driver Paul Spooner, were once again out in the BTR-prepared ex Marcus Gronholm Ford Focus WRC07 and stopped the clocks in the first stage Clocaenog, just 2 seconds ahead of Hugh Hunter and Andy Marchbank's Focus WRC.

However, in stage two the conditions got the better of the Perez and a spin and an overshoot saw him drop eleven seconds to Hunter/Marchbank but, on the following stage, in Penmachno North it was Hunter who lost time by going off. They allowed the Kick Energy pair to move back to the top of the leader board and maintain that lead over the remaining stages.

After the event Steve said
"Those are some of the worst driving conditions I have ever competed in on a championship round, it was due to the weather that I lost time on SS2. I am so happy to win this event as that makes six wins out of eight rounds and it was just a little bit extra icing on the cake after clinching the Championship title on the Woodpecker."

PREVIEW: HANKOOK MSA WELSH NATIONAL RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP 2010

Posted: October 10, 2010 6:11 PM

North Wales Car Clubs Cambrian Rally is the last round of the 2010 Hankook MSA Welsh National Championship starting from Llandudno North Wales on Saturday 16th October. Rally crews will tackle forty five miles of some of the best forest stages North Wales has to offer in the Clocaenog and Penmachno complexes.

In the Overall Championship, Alex Allingham (Stalybridge) and Mark Glennerster (Swindon) pictured below, take a 13 point lead to Llandudno, and seeded at car 5 in their N4 Subaru after a good result last year, they look favourites to take the title.
Tony McWhirter (Cardiff) and Steve Green(Leeds) seasoned Welsh contenders are currently in second place and have had some good results of late in the Mitsubishi Evo and will be pushing Alex all the way. Both drivers have been using Hankook tyres this year.
Hugh Hunter (Ruthin) with co-driver Andy Marchbank (Wirral) return to the Welsh forests in their Ford Focus WRC for the first time since February and will be pushing for a win on the final round.

Overall Group N
Alex Allingham/Mark Glennerster only have to leave MC1 to seal a win in the Overall Group N because at the time of writing Ludlow pairing Roger Chillman/Andrew Sankey have not entered in their Subaru, Pertons Paul Davy and Roger Allan who led the overall standings earlier in the season in their Subaru could finish 2nd in Group N standings.

Two Wheel Drive
The most intense battle though is in the Two Wheel Drive category Martin Walby (Coleford) has really enjoyed the 2010 season in his Mk11 Escort, Martin has already won the B11 class and would like to add the two wheel drive title on the Cambrian with Paul Willetts, (Lydney), on the notes they have loads of experience between them and will know exactly what they have to do. Local Sion Matthews 19, (Gaerwen, Ynys Mon), with Rob Hopewell, (Caernarvon), on the notes, Rob knows the Cambrian Stages very well and will be “going for it” in their Nova. Ian Sutton, (Cwmbran), Nova, with Heather Watkins and Robert Wheeler 19, (Cardigan), will be pushing them hard and will be looking to capitalise on any errors they make. All four will be looking to improve on their scores and with only 14 points between them this is far from clear cut. The battle between Sion Matthews and Ian Sutton will ultimately decide who wins class B9. Local Matt Edwards, out in his MG will be looking for a repeat of his class win on the recent Woodpecker Rally whilst he has had a good season the results on Welsh rounds have not been forthcoming, he could though yet decide where the two wheel class battle will go.

The Two Wheel Drive battle amongst the co-drivers is no less intense, Karen Watts (Lydney) and Heather Watkins, (Pontypool), both are on 57 points and both looking to improve their scores. Rob Hopewell though can take a maximum 17 points and could possibly pinch it.

Under 25- Juniors
Robert Wheeler, 19 (Cardigan), Golf, holds a slender 1 point advantage over his nearest challenger local Sion Matthews, 19 Nova and when they have both finished events they have only ever been separated by 2 points, it could be down to where Luke Francis finishes. Luke, 19, from Rhuddlan, has had a mixed year and trails Sion by 11 points, but in his Mitsubishi Evo has usually beaten Robert and Sion when he’s finished. Barry Jones (Llandysul) with Chris Williams will be out again in their Escort and will also be pushing for maximum points. This is a very close call no one has taken the Junior category by storm Robert Wheeler has been consistent and his form has improved considerably as the year has progressed and has already won the B10 class only by the final control will we know the outcome. This really is the way it should be.

The class winners very much reflect what will happen above although Adam Clews, (Prestatyn) and Pete Williams (St Aspah) should take the N3 class a finish being the only requirement.
